Hi Toni, great video. I’ve seen people using plastic wrap over the paper, before the standing wrap. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks. 😊

Hi! So plastic wrap is typically used with a hot poultice, such as furazone, to sweat the leg, which is another way to remove swelling. However, a sweat wrap shouldn't be on more than 12 hours, I prefer to remove them after 8. A cold poultice, like the clay I use here, has almost no time limit. You can use plastic wrap with a cold poultice, but it doesn't breathe as well as the paper does, and could trap bacteria as well as moisture. I also worry about wrapping the plastic too tight, since it sticks to itself, and causing pressure points. It's also more dangerous than paper if the horse tears off their standing wraps and chews on what's underneath. However, plastic will keep the wraps cleaner than paper will.

Can you use poultice through winter with temps being so cold and having have their legs wet?

I think you could, provided you used a standing wrap over the poultice, and kept the horse in overnight. However, I'm from CA, so I'm not the most experienced with cold winters.

Do you have to wrap the horses legs while using poultice? Or can it just be applied to the leg and left?

You don't have to wrap the leg, which makes poultice really useful for horses that won't tolerate wraps but still need some swelling reduction in the leg. However, if you leave it open your horse may smear the poultice all over themselves and the stall, so just be prepared for that. The poultice also won't stay wet as long or adhere to the leg as well which will take away some of it's functionality, but only a little bit.

I wash off poultice before I ride, so the legs can dry while the horse works, and I can reapply poultice after if nessecary.

It's called clay poultice, there are a lot of different brands, it helps increase circulation and reduce swelling.

It helps increase circulation and reduce swelling or stockiness in legs or other parts of the body.

everyone just going tell you that you don’t have to poultice your horse everyday, cause it just something to use for, if you ever work your horses super hard or you can use it after a big race or if your horses leg is sore, cause for me i use mine after hard workout and if they got anywhere that’s sore but i don’t do it everyday to do hard workout on my horses cause i usually do it on the weekends but again everyone don’t use poultice for fun on your horses, but if you got a reason to use it but hope this comment help and i’m a barrel racer and i do put poultice on my horses elf after races i go to so yea :) but again hope this help kinda just to use poultice if you got a reason to use it
