    I trained in a Muay Thai gym. It was one of the most dangerous and vicious modes of combat I had experienced. A guy joined the gym for a while. He was toying with all of us. He was well versed in Kali Filipino Arts. I asked him, "Jason, how can you pick apart your opponents attacks so easily?" he said "When you spar with the sticks which move 32mph, and which represents swords/machete's, then everyones hands appear to move in slow motion". So we all appeared to him to move in slow motion, and he knew the hand drills well. He trained every day. He died many years later from Crohn's disease, but I will never forget how calm he was as he picked apart our attacks and countered effortlessly almost with gentleness, but with precision. RIP Jason.

      because FMA drills are for the reflexes.. as you can see, the drills may not happen in real situation but can effectively train you to have faster reflexes..
      dodging, blocking, countering the master's stick or knife and even barehand at a faster pace can give you insane reflexes because of muscle memory..

      Wow. It’s a great self defense tool when you just want to whoop some guys, there was a 40 year old man who like to go to pool sharks Las Vegas in early 2000’s it was a pretty rough time to be filipino going around trying to mind their own business playing pool. A couple of times he’d get picked on but most of the time I seen him lay people out trying to rob him. Even 1v3 sometimes

    I’m in my late 20’s and I’ve trained in both Traditional and Mixed martial arts for several years, and what I will tell you is that Old martial artists do not mess around. Little story time.
    Let me tell you about a man we’ll call Doctor J.
    One of the toughest matches I’ve ever had in my life was with a 70-year old college professor with a doctorate in American history. The man is a grandfather and one of the nicest, most respectful men you’d ever meet. You wouldn’t think the man was all that dangerous. You’d be wrong. There’s a reason we in the dojo all had the saying that “The Doctor hits like a train”.
    As an older man, he didn’t stick around for long, drawn out fights, and he didn’t have the best speed or mobility in the place, but he was fast where it counted most. He knew that he wasn’t gonna out-speed the younger guys, so he focused most of his technique on his single-hit counterpunch, and it almost always connected. I could count on one hand the amount of times I’d been winded as hard as when that man tagged me clean in the chest.
    He could go on the ground if he had to. He wasn’t gonna overpower you, but he’d consistently see an opening in your defense the second you made a move, and then all of a sudden he’d be the one in full-mount and already be in the process of hammering your face with that damn right of his.
    Doctor J has been getting along in his years, but he makes an effort to keep the younger ones in line and even with his age, he’s always still willing to learn something new regardless of how young or old you are.
    The lesson I’d wanna leave is this: old martial artists that can kick ass, more often than not, have honed their craft to such precision because they know what works for them. They are aware of their limits and instead of denying their mortality, consider it and adapt to the situation at hand. They never stop being students even after their hair turns grey.
    Always be willing to learn, and try to figure out what works for you, because the best style, whether in a fight or in your daily life, is the one that keeps you going each and every single day.
    Thank you Dr. J. You’re one of the toughest bastards I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.

    A somewhat related story. Dan Inosanto tells a story about a time he was about to give a demo of Filipino martial arts. He was approached by an old Filipino man with a hardwood cane and a long, sharpened thumbnail who said something like, I'm gonna watch you, and if you don't do it right, we're gonna have a 'talk' afterwards. Guro Dan recognized from his demeanor, cane and thumbnail that he was an old school escrima fighter and not to be messed with.
    After his demo, the old man said that Guro Dan's escrima was authentic, and they didn't need to have that talk.
    Never underestimate old men. Especially if they have hardwood canes and eye gouging thumbnails.

      That thumbnail thing is true. I have a medical condition that allows my nails to grow thick and nearly unbreakable. I can unscrew with it if the screw is not real tight. I can drive my thumb through a brick wall and my nail won't break. So I used to trim my nail like a small knife and i can cut you with it.

    I always think it's interesting that when you watch the older practitioners they have more efficient and shorter more direct movement.
    It's almost too subtle to see what they are doing if you don't have an eye for it. Where they might have lost power and speed with age you can see tactics, body manipulation and efficient movement more than make up for it.

The efficiency with which this master continuously ‘destroys’ his opponent is rather awe inspiring. The student is quick to realize that he won’t be getting even one shot in throughout out this training session. The fact that the student can laugh at himself and his predicament against this joyful master and that he can’t succeed in slicing or stabbing him, is truly the only way to remain teachable. Truly enjoyed this.

    Imagine Mr. Gaje on a London street in the evening with a lightweight cane when a couple of thugs try to rob him and give him a Glasgow smile as a trade for his wallet. He probably wouldn't need the butter knife. I think I'll just sir back and watch that again.

    Preparing for a knife fight may sound comical...
    Until you're in a knife fight.

    • @subsonic9854
      @subsonic9854 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sure but the same could be said for an alien invasion or zombie apocalypse. Almost all the major injuries i know of afflict friends training martial arts, and those among them whove dealt with knife or gun attacks had to do so because they were imprudent, drunk, or looking for a fight. The ones who successfully defended themselves were a tkd champion and a 5 ft untrained woman, neither of whom had ever trained to fend off knives but just kept their wits about them.
      Martial arts are just for fun dude. If you want to avoid danger and arent a cop, just study hard and stay alert.

    • @Wavemaninawe
      @Wavemaninawe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, I would rephrase it as "until you face a knife attack".
      Something which seems to be a disturbingly common aspect of assault / physical threat. And yeah, learning to work with knives should significantly improve your odds of survival.
      But as far as dueling with blades goes... if you go looking for that type of action, its all on you and you deserve whatever you get.
