  • For Omar Z Robles, to be different is to be extraordinary. Leaning on his background in performance arts, Robles captures the beauty of ballet dancers using the vibrant streets of Rio de Janeiro as their stage. The familiar background strips away the barrier between subject and viewer, daring you to explore the power of being different.

"it's okay to be extraordinary..." you are an utter inspiration! I am moved by your incredible photos and eloquence in this documentary. Your creativeness is explosive versus all the technical camera jargon that I sometimes have trouble understanding when shooting. You understand the movement, the emotion and you are truly connected with the dancers you photograph. What you capture is beyond words...poetry without words in both photos and in dance. I want that too! Thank you so much for sharing--from one of your biggest fans!

Excellent work. Unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend anyone, especially an American, to travel to Brazil with a half way expensive camera. Unless you don’t want to come home without it.

OMG! Ok, I recently did a street ballet shoot with a young dancer. And fell in love with this concept. I just happened on this video today as a SmugMug user. Omar, I'm obsessed! I LOVE your work I'm so thrilled to follow you. I hope to find more opportunities to incorporate dancers, outside of the studio in the street or in beautiful landscapes.. And SmugMug I just started studying the craft of making videos. I'm loving this series on photographers. So fab! Thank you both for a great flash of inspiration. My wheels are turning! Best feeling in the world.

Very nice work. How were you not mugged during the shoots? Did you have some special setup with the people from the favelas? The average citizen would have had their camera gear taken rather quickly after leaving your hotel. Rio is beautiful but not a place you want to tempt the thieves with high end cameras.

Awesome video! I like Omar's work and I've been following him for some time.
Let me just help a little bit with the subtitles:
2:11 "Alright so today we are in Hua do Vido" should be "Alright, so today we are in Rua do Ouvidor" (Ouvidor Street)
2:18 "[indistinct speaking]." They're talking in Portuguese: "Omar: Oi, é um prazer… Encantado", "Woman: Prazer, prazer…" which translates literally to "Hi, it's a pleasure [to meet you], delighted [to meet you]" (sounds cheesy in English, but it's usual to say that in Portuguese) and the woman answers "It's my pleasure" (lit. she says "pleasure, pleasure"), so:
"Omar: Hi, nice to meet you./Woman: My pleasure"
And then Omar say in Portuguese "it's here…" and it cuts, it doesn't show the complete sentence

Hello Omar, first of all, I would like to say that I love your work, I accompany you for some time and I love everything you do! Congratulations! I live in Brazil and I'm from GFX, I have a 63mm lens. I use more in studio, I make photographs of models for the publishing market. I would like to know how you can have it, the moment of the click, the apex of a movement, I feel that GFX is slow to portray movement, to give the photographer the team of the click and in your images that moment is magical, Perfect. Would you have any tips for me?

What a wonderful video. I am disappointed that you do not seem to get credit by Smugmug for being the videographer. How are they supporting artists if we have to scroll down through the comments just to find who made such a beautiful video? As a beginner videographer, I am delighted when I find expert footage like this that feels professional but at the same time real.
