10:40 If you really want to, you could still download digital games to your PSP. All you need to do is link your PS account, get connected to the internet, then go to the store. While the store on it is shutdown, you are still able to access your download list from. In fact, if you buy a PS1 classic on your PS3, it will then appear in there to download.

@mohnjonroe We decided from the beginning of this project not to cover that sort of thing (ISOs, emulators, modding, etc) because of how wide-open those topics are (and I know zero about them). Honestly, if you have a PS3 it's really not that difficult once you do the Device Setup Password and add some funds elsewhere, which gets you the games for PS3/PSP/PSV and potentially PS5 later down the road.

4:07 Finally a video that points out and really highlights the transparency issues of PS1 games running on PS2 in backward compatibility! That's been bugging me ever since I got a PS2 some 20+ years ago, and I've never heard anyone talk about it. People even called me crazy for pointing it out and said there must be something wrong with my PS2. But nope, every single PS2 suffers from it, even the latest models that used software emulation for backward compatibility.

To be fair, I do play on an HDTV which does have composite input, but unlike the PAL region, we don't have that many issues since all of our games originally worked with 60Hz TV, which is why the visuals of the cutscene in Crash Bash looked accelerated in contrast to the Audio clip since the PS3 will play the games a bit closer to 60 FPS instead of 50

It's sad that many of the official methods of playing the original games are currently stuck to previous consoles like PS3 and Vita, which means they might eventually be lost as Sony closes their digital stores (they already did it with PSP and the negative feedback only delayed the inevitable when it comes to PS Store on PS3 and Vita).
I will always defend Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy for being the best way of playing Crash 1 and 2 (and adding a new level to Warped), but it's good to have options

Some notes for the PSP versions.
    Pros:
    - more customisable screen settings
    - optional fast disc speed emulation
    - more memory card space, as it assigns two "cards" for each individual game and lets you transfer data freely between cards
    - fully customisable button mapping, including options for pressing L1+R1 or L2+R2 with a single button
    - you can also map buttons to each cardinal direction on the Analog Stick, including the D-Pad
    Cons:
    - no true analog support in any game
    - no multiplayer for CTR or Bash, and you can only assign the device to Controller Ports 1 and 2
    - lip sync animations run too slow in CTR's cutscenes
    - only one pair of shoulder buttons, which can make certain controls inaccessible even when remapped

I compared Crash 2 disc on PS1, PS2 and PS3 with normal settings. I looked at the portals. On PS1 you see scanlines, but no black dithering spots. Both PS2 and PS3 has these. I guess that's what the smoothing turns off. Either way PS1 seems to be distinctly different from each. Both PS2 and PS3 emulate PS1 games even when using the disc so you're not getting the hardware experience. I still have a PS1 and managed to snag a small CRT TV with SCART port for free from somebody wanting to get rid of it. I used online craigslist and such to find this. This is the best way to play as it completely eliminates input lag. In fact I managed the plat relic on Crash Bash N. Ballism in 2 tries on the CRT. I had been struggling for ages using the LCD TV even with the game mode turned on.

    • @KBABZ

There's no better way than Beetle PSX HW core with 16X upscale and geometry correction. PS Plus doesn't come close. That's my 2C.. I still have a PS2, PS3, skipped the 4 and got a PS5 two weeks ago, and for PS1 I always go back to Beetle or Duckstation. With Duckstation on my 12th gen laptop, it's easy to do a 1 frame look ahead too for ultra low input latency. My 11th gen struggles a bit with that. The reason I say Beetle is because Mednafen (what Beetle uses) is still the most accurate overall. It's like 99.99999% compatibility with upscaling. Amazing stuff. So for those who also have a good gaming PC, that's what I recommend. For others, let's hope Sony adds the crash series soon to PS5.. Otherwise PS3 is ok I guess.

Officially the best way to play would be on a PSP or Vita. These games look and run better on these handhelds than other official solutions. If you absolutely need to play on a big screen or just prefer a controller over using a handheld than a PS3 or PS2 would be best if you have an old box TV hanging around because PS1 games kinda look like shit on a modern screen. Reasons I don't recommend a real PS1 is if your discs are scratched a lot the PS1 may not be able to read it and you are more likely to own a PS2 or find a PS2 for sale. Best way over all is using Duckstation emulator on a PC or Android.

Ugh, I really disliked the remake. Nothing clicked with me aside for the save features improvements in Crash 1. Hated the graphics (they ruined the artstyle that Naught Dog was going for by completely ignoring that every game had a different vibe), music and gameplay (and sadly Crash 4 managed to be even worse somehow), so I better stuck with Retroarch to play the OG trilogy. The Spyro remake on the other hand, I adored. The camera is a little wonky, but so do was in the PS1 games. Sadly, I never got to play CTRNF, as it never came to PC. Why? I don´t know. It could easily have become THE Mario Kart for PC users, but Activision is dumb af. Now that Crash is a Microsoft IP after the buyout, I could see they releasing the game on PC in a near future, maybe in a "deluxe" version with all of the DLC unlocked as it should. Great video btw, not only for Crash fans, but for PS1 enjoyers in general.

Honestly feel like Bash has aged worse than Crash 1.

Easier on PC. Plus PS1 emulators are easy to run. Plus you can play them on a CRT too with proper 240p output

    DuckStation is the way.
I wouldn't recommend these devices when it comes to PS1 emulation, because they aren't accurate.

Okay the complaints of the N.Sane Trilogy controls are beyond exaggerated and requires people to pretend the original controls were fine. In the original Crash 1 every time you spin before you land after a jump Crash moves a bit forward automatically, I have lost too many lives because of this annoying problem, especially when paired with the lack of analog support.
The only time the new NST hitbox/jump physics gave me trouble was in the 2 bridge levels and it's something I have noticed in other people's playthrough, outside of that you'll rarely face this problem. In Crash 2/3 it's not even an issue since jumps are nowhere near as tight.
The only actually valid criticism is that the devs sometimes missed the tone the originals were going for, whether it's in some cutscenes or music. They should have added the original music as an update or DLC.

After getting used to Crash 1 spin, and playing equally well both games, the hitbox really screws me in N Sane. And sometimes the more detail graphics can make some things more harder to see, though this i more of an issue with modern gaming in general, especially with the ones that focus too much on realistic lightning. When you have more simpler graphics everything is almost inmediately percieved by the player.

nah crash's jump and momentum do not feel familiar in the remakes. it is a legitimate critiaue and why i don't play them anymore and why im replaying them on emulators.

I agree in the sense that I'd always pick the originals over the Remakes, but at the same time the Remakes have a lot of their own improvements that will be of value to some people. I wanted to compare and contrast them so that it's easier for them to make a call on which one to pick, the same way one would bring up remasters into the conversation.

When the solution is spending $300 for a ratty old ps1 game, its really not a solution.

We never stated which option is the best *for you*, more in a general sense. If you find the discs to be too expensive, then it sounds like the digital PSone Classics is the right pick for you. That aside, it's always worth checking the prices of the games you want. As much as we love Crash, it's not Suikoden!
