It's fun when you can diagnose correctly and get the replacement part and make it work again. Karin and I have repaired both of our commercial ovens, a microwave and our 20 year old espresso machine. Thanks to e-bay we can get parts for nearly everything. Thanks Lloyd!
Thank you very much for making the video and sharing it. It is quite impressive. I could not find an exact match for my Turntable motor assembly. So I was forced to overhaul the motor assembly. My first try failed. I had to redo the entire process of overhauling the motor assembly all over again and was successful. Keep up the good work. You explained very nicely.
I live in a boarding house with seven boarders including myself. The house manager had purchased a used Toshiba microwave that worked fine for a few weeks. Then, the turntable stopped working. She thought it was because one of us had gotten water on the turntable. Meanwhile, we kept using the microwave. However, I like popcorn, and, with the turntable no longer working, the popcorn popper couldn't rotate. I was thinking about buying a new one when I checked online for a possible cause and found it could be the motor stopped working. After watching this video, I think I'll suggest the manager ask her husband to replace the motor which would be cheaper than buying a new microwave. Thanks for determining the problem, the solution, and filming how to replace the motor.
The manufacturer must have known some day that motor would crap out. I never had one not spin for me, I'll check the motor first thing. Good job with the DIY motor replacement.!!
I just replaced the magnetrons and turntable motors on two almost identical LG microwaves. They had identical problems after exactly 4 years. I waited to repair the first one until the second one broke. Now I have two. I am never buying another piece of crap that ends up in a landfill with the ones from my 320 million fellow citizens. Save the earth! The magnetrons were $30, and the turntable motors were $10. Microwaves were $200 each. It took a lot of my time following videos, but this 67 yo female is glad it worked! Hope they last. I was hoping you would identify the grease they seem to put under the motor. In my earlier model, the black wire inserted on the left, and in the latter model, the white wire inserted on the left. They added a second high voltage fuse to the latter model, which they sell for $12 because only LG makes a 5K volt 0.95 amp fuse, so I used 1 amp. I don't think you really need a second fuse.
I have this exact microwave in my trailer. The motor is getting voltage and doesn't turn. When I order, all of the MDS-4A motors say 220v on them, where mine says 120v. Same part number and specifications otherwise. Do you remember that being the case when you fixed this one?
@@RustyGlovebox I ended up buying one with a different part number, but the same specifications. All of the MDS-4A motors on Amazon say 220 volts on their specifications. We'll see if it works. Thanks for the video.
Thanks! I was wondering what the motor cost. Great job with the troubleshooting, and you're right, that was an ingenious way to do the motor access panel.
Hi Rusty After you did the voltage test and let the motor hang, how did you verify it was still not working? Did you hit the start button while plugged in? Thx
I have checked the turntable motor it is working but current supply to the motor is not found so pls suggest me is their any fuse or relay to control power supply to motor and door bulb. The my samsung microwave 28liter capacity ,I am from India so pls give me suggestions to resolve the rotation problem .
Make sure the microwave is unplugged. Be sure to stay away from the magnatron to avoid electroction . You should see a glass fuse that controls the main power supply.
Great repair job. Another Great Day in the Shop with you. And your reward popped right up. Thanks for sharing your smarts with us and have a great week my Friend. BigW:-)
I don't know if it matters or not. But did you notice that you reversed the wires on the motor? And what did the motor cost? It was a good video and a diagnoses.

Good repair there. Those motors, by the way, will give a nasty jolt if you spin the shaft and touch the terminals at the same time. Do you know what happened to the old motor? Was is seized as you said? Did you try and unstick it at all? Just curious.
I have a 18yr old over the range Maytag microwave and the motor must of went bad at least I'm hoping. The drive will turn on its own until I put the glass plate down and the drive don't seem to have the power to turn while that glass plate is on it. For $20 or so I think I'm going to order that motor, new over the range microwaves in the size I have are around $400+ and then Id have to special order one because I want black and I don't like looks of stainless steal! I think the $20 motor part will be worth the guess and save some $ if it works. My 24 yr old whirlpool refrigerator could go bad anytime now and looks like I'm going to run into the same problem all stores pushing that ugly stainless steal.
@@RustyGlovebox Took me 5 minutes to drop the bottom cover on my microwave range pull old motor and replace with new motor, works great! Took the old motor apart and was 6 tiny gears inside, one gear had a tiny piece of flash or burr on it that caused the turntable to stop turning. Similar thing happened to my garage door opener the plastic drive gear inside the garage door opener broke, new drive gear cost me $11 with shipping to fix and that was 6 years ago and garage opener still working today.
I love the fact that you take time to work on things and fix them. Too often, we just toss stuff and buy new ones.
Thanks Perry, it is a challenge and I enjoy giving it a shot.

That's pretty cool that the access door can be reused in that manner. They manufacture was thinking ahead. Nice diag Lloyd.
You just don't see that much were a manufacture thinks about servicing a product. Thanks
You repurposed it Rusty, good for you! To many people just throw it out and get a new one, but with a little will power and knowledge you fixed it!
Thanks, with just a little exploring it was easy to repair. Enjoy your week.
always nice to be able to fix rather than throw away. Good job, I can almost smell that popcorn from here.
None of the smoke was let out of the circuit boards so we are good to go, Thanks Dan
I never seen the inside of one, very well diagnosed Lloyd.
Thanks Steve, it didn't take but a minute to check. And the parts was cheap to get it back in operation.
I gotta agree... That motor surround is super smart.
Thant made it so easy to get to the motor. Thanks Greg
Nicely Done Bud!! I've never had to mess with a microwave!! Well worth the repair!!☺

You are quite the detective Lloyd. Nice work. Love that cover for the motor. Cool idea. I bet not many of them get snipped like yours did. Lol !!
Thanks Marty, now I have one for the shop if I think I need a bag of popcorn real quick...ha ha
that little oven is a good looking one, well worth the price of the motor.
Thanks Vernon, it was only a year old so it should be good for a long time now.
Great info . I don’t wear any rings working on anything.
Thanks, you are right about wear metal around electrical equipment .
Gotta love those freebies! Great job fixing it up! The access door is actually designed for a repair?!?!? Amazing to see that these days.
Thanks, yes the panel access made the job go really easy. With a little luck it will last. Enjoy your week.

Good job Lloyd. I threw one away because the carousel didn't work.
Thanks Nathan, it is up and running once again.
Well done on solving the problem Lloyd. Mind you, they are so inexpensive today, possibly better to just buy a new one.
If it had been anything else on this small microwave I would agree. The motor was only $13 delivered. Thanks Malc

Did you check the old motor for continuity?
I checked for power getting to the motor and went from there to replace the motor, Thanks

Very informative Lloyd, was impressed with the box, :) 😎 👍 ✌️

I would like to use the little motor for a project. How many volts does it work with? Can i use a little transformer? If so what kind?
Carousel Glass Motor 100/120 V 4/4.8 RPM

are the motors universal? Any one will fit??? Where should I shop?

How much are the motors for these mine is the same size or a little bit bigger GE 😎
Less than $20

Now I got to go make some popcorn.

Well done Lloyd now you've got 2 microwave ovens.😃
Thanks Noel, one in the house and one in the shop. No waiting anymore ha ha.
My turntable rotates but not smoothly....it sort of hesitates during the cycle. THERE IS ALSO an strong burning cork odor. Is this related, ya think?
Make sure the little plastic drive under the glass tray is not pushed down dragging on the body of the microwave.

I had never heard of them before. It came out of RV. I used the number on the part itself and found one on the net. Thanks Drew
Was the motor expensive I recently tossed out one of these ovens with a bad motor lol
The motor cost $13 delivered. Not to bad .
Rusty you missed your calling. You should of been an Instrument Man. lol
People today just throw stuff out and buy another before trying to fix it. It was worth a try. Thanks and enjoy your week.
