    This took real talent and real skill to do dance moves like this! You had to be in top notch shape:)😀👏🏼🏋🏼‍♂️ We will never see this kind of innocence and fun in today’s world. This was definitely locked in time to always remember:)

    It's hard to believe that Debbie Reynolds was not a trained dancer; she does her dances so well. Bobby Van was one of the best dancers in Hollywood. I don't much care for this particular number, but it was nice to see him again.

      Wait, Debbie Reynolds' wasn't a trained dancer‽

    • @youyong28
      @youyong28 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elh93 She wasn’t trained before she was chosen for “Singin’ in the Rain “ but she was taught while making the movie and became a very good tap dancer. She was originally a gymnast. So was Russ Tamblyn, who also did amazing work despite his lack of training.

      She told that when she was getting started in the movies, the studio system was in full tilt. When they would do the choreography, they would ask if she knew a certain step, if not they would tell her go down to some stage where Fred Astair or some other great was working and tell him she needed to learn that step. So while she may not have had some formal kind of dance training (and she was certainly a natural), she learned from the best.

    Bobby Van's wacky energy is perfect match for Debbies. Glad they paired several times. By the way this is wacky fun but its still dance and have to be great athlete to do this stamina of a full back.

    That’s the reason why I think even though Gene Kelly was hard with her in Singin’ In The Rain, pushing her to her limits, since she was new and inexperienced, at the end she was able to make a carrier of it.

    I wasn't aware that Debbie did a cameo in 'Skirts Ahoy', the Esther Williams feature. Just look at Debbie's professionalism and dancing expertise. Here she is shown with another fantastic dancer from the 50's - Mr. Bobby Van. No matter how zany the steps were, both these youngsters performed with consummate verve. Bobby Van had one outstanding number in 'Small Town Girl' that starred Jane Powell and Farley Granger.

    The song was originally a vaudeville number from 1918 or so. Just a little cringe inducing by todays standards, as is this dance. This whole number is still pretty fun, though.

    There is a singer named Gloria Grey singing this song on a Soundie.. She is very nice looking and a fine singer. There is no info of her on the web. She appears to be a very light skinned black. But the only other clip of her I found is from the fifties where she appears to be passing for white. There are a couple pictures of her from the late fifties on eBay where she is described as an R&B singer.
    I did some googling. The song goes back to at least 1920.
    This may be the earliest recording with additional lyrics, which makes the song make more sense. The sheet music is from 1919.

    I suspect this song dates from around 1910-1915, meaning it was already old and corny-sounding when this film was made in 1952. Thus it was staged to be intentionally goofy and over-acted.

    • @ViolettaD1485

      This whole movie is weird though. The Navy gals are man hungry to the point of absurd, and one of them even brawls with Army women over a guy. Not exactly sure that's a great message to young girls (some other girl trying to steal your guy? Fight her!).
