What a good and generous man you are. You are constantly giving the gift of knowledge to so many who need it. I live in an apartment, am 72 years old and don't even live in the US, but, oh my, how I enjoy your videos. Thank you. Best wishes👏👏👏👏👏👏
I lived in a home with no air conditioning, and the city would have about a month of extreme heat. I couldn't fall asleep when I was so hot. I finally took a towel, soaked it in cold water and wrung it out, and then draped it over myself (nekkid) and it cooled me off enough where I could sleep. I slept well in the summer with that set up. Good luck, as always, Bob!
I have an organic garden in the DFW area. I use the black and it lowers the temperature on my garden by about 6 degrees. That doesn't sound like much but for plants a difference between 106 degrees and 100 degrees is a BIG difference for their survival! It must work the same for people. 😊👍 Thanks for sharing this video with us.
Bob. I just want you to know I am watching your videos and getting all the information about living the Nomadic life. The information is very helpful for when I take the plunge. So to speak. Thank you so much.
Not that i have a van or plannning to own one in the near future , yet i still enjoy watching such videos and glad that i discovered your channel. Good job Sir!
Hey Bob, great video. I just wanted to make a small correction. Pahrump is in the Mojave Desert, not the Sonoran Desert (as you said at the beginning of the video).
So much to consider when gearing up for life on the road. I'm using Amazon cart as my to do list by selecting items as the boondockers suggest. I keep thinking I have all I need . . . then I watch another of your videos and learn about the need for something else. (For me, shade cloth has always been cover for tomatoes.) I want to thank you all for the comprehensive how-to videos. Just maybe I will get on the road with a small margin of preparedness. From the Maine foothills, be well.
I really like this set up. It reminds me of videos I've seen of Bedouin tents in Arabia. Maybe there are some shared best practices that you're both using. Specifically, it seems like their tents are made to allow air to blow through and also they use a lot of dark colors -- like you do too.🙂
When I start my nomadic adventures next year, I want to try to stay primarily in wooded areas. I love trees, rivers, lakes etc... But I think these shade cloths will come in handy anywhere! 😊
Thx for sharing. We bought a used motorcoach. Its awning was gone. We were trying to figure out how to do this without spending a fortune. This is the answer. And we bought a couple yard plant poles to use for opposite end.
"Be aware that I am an Amazon affiliate, and by using these links I will make a small percentage of your purchase, even if you buy something else--and it won't cost you anything!" Thank you for including your disclaimer! I HATE IT when affiliates hide their relationship!
Bob I really like this idea! you might consider making a pvc frame and bungycording the shade clothe to the PVC you could even stake the frames into the ground for more security and allow you to create doors in and out of your camp.
Getting antsi. Went in a few day ago and got out FREE federal lane pass. Now just got to wait to get a van and away we go. Will put this stuff on the need list. Cant stand the heat. Had heat stroke years ago and since then I just get sick when it hits 80 plus. Air condition pansy all the way LoL. Thanx bob for the vid.
You need to cut slits in the shade cloth to allow the wind through. I use shade cloth in my large house patio. The first year the Winter wind ripped the cloth off. After redoing it the following Spring, I cut wind cuts horizontally, about a foot apiece, in the shade cloth at about every three feet. It does not affect the sunblocking quality. You'd think it would, but it doesn't. You'll know if you need to cut more to keep the Winter wind from destroying or carrying off your shade cloth. Anyway, that way you do not need to move it.
Doesn’t hurt that the van is white, too! Great idea to use black color to attract the sun. Same idea as black face paint under eyes of athletes. Awesome video Bob!
Thank you from the Southwestern U.S. desert for the great info., I was pondering the problem of having roof-mounted solar panels and having to park in the sun to use them. Staying cool in the desert is a major consideration for boondocking.
Great tips for staying cooler in such heat. In order to save space on storing the shade cloths, can you fold them to the size of your bed mattress so they can be stored directly underneath that mattress? Or perhaps roll them up lengthwise, and then velcro the roll to the edge of your mattress.....or allow it to drape to the floor of your van like a dust ruffle. Or,.... flatten the roll a bit and store it on the inside curve of the van's bumper. (They will, of course, get dirtier using that method.)
Thank you. I have just started watching your videos in the last couple of months. They have become my escape from my obsession over our current political circus. I even purchase a great little mini-van and made a three day road trip. I plan on more, and perhaps eventually I can retire and hit the road full time. I love the sense of community as well. I am slowly purchasing the items I need and love the advice you give on products.
A court yard is a grand idea! We don't live without bungy cords..lol.. court yard is an extra room! Thank you for the info so helpful! I have a whole notebook of notes I have taken from your videos.. Getting prepared!
THANKS BOB! I love the practical stuff you bring to our community! Thanks for taking the time to explain how you use it and how it's attached...very important points. TAKE CARE OUT THERE!
I could use a system like this for controlling how much direct sun any outside garden plants I may be growing in the future! Thank you Bob for the idea!
thanks for the video, i have a home built teardrop and i just finished an awning for it using the silver tarps but ill pick up a mesh tarp for shade. my teardrop is skinned in aluminum and polished to reflect the sun. my daughter lives in Alabama and I've camped in her back yard during summer where after 9AM you had to go inside because of the heat and humidity (i'm a New Englander so cold is never a problem but heat and humidity kills me) what i found out is the if it was 90's outside the teardrop it was 70's inside it because the aluminum reflected most of the sunlight
Thanks Bob for the info. I would have chosen tarps, so thanks again for the info. I truly enjoy your videos. So glad you have been helping us all see alternatives. You are appreciated, most definitely
Creating the go anywhere covered patio space, with off the shelf materials, between your van and trailer is an excellent idea! This is one of those original, priceless, 'outside the box', do it yourself creations / ideas that adds a lot of value to the outdoor experience. Thanks Bob :-) I wouldn't be surprised if next year we see some van or RV company try to market this idea.
San Bruno Beacon : I like the white cover for the windshields and the use of magnets. Great way to keep the heat from getting inside and making your own shade, too.
Wow, Bob, this is a very informative video. Thanks for sharing your experience and education. We're not in a dessert, but if we do go, I'm much better informed. You are so funny, can't get the shade cloths back into their pouches, eh? Lol.
You know I live in Kingman AZ where the sun is out a lot. We have had a lot of heavy rainfall as well ! I want to put this from my eves of the roof. If I would do this on the west side of my home where it would keep our ac cooler as well as the stucco walls where the solar mass would be even 10 degrees would help a ton ! As well as save money !
I cut 3 sided holes in my tarps, so when it's windy the wind just goes right through those holes. I've had gusts up to 50mph. I cook outside my van most often, in the lee side, and the Tarp stops the wind from blowing out or compromising the flame. I use ropes and clamps to anchor my tarps.
Very nice set up ... you could shower under the shade cloth also ... really loved the windshield cover and you're right, the price isn't bad at all. Thanks for the video.
i really love the windshield cover bob. i am checking to see if they make one for a hilux. i agree shade cloth is gt. yr point about the bulk of it is true. i have just done the Canning Stock Route - the longest and loneliest 4wd track in the world - so WEIGHT is also a big consideration now. the biggest cause of breakdowns out there is overloading. anyway when weight is not a big issue these are top ideas. well done.
Hi Bob, I was curious when I saw the covers on the tires. Should we be covering them while boo docking. Love you and Carolyn. Love all your knowledge that you share with us.
Cynthia Roswick , Covering the tires keeps the sun from destroying the rubber. Tires will dry out and crack. Extends the life of your very expensive tires.
Love this video... It needs to be expanded on not just by you but others young and old. I have not being in the West or the Southwest but plan to do so. Of course I need my travel trailer or van to be right, it does not have to be Bulletproof but I do not as I get rid of my Sticks and Bricks want to invent the wheel hahaha. As a criticism, if you're grown to take it, it seems to me you need an assistant who's like-minded with experience... Just my opinion so don't take it to heart. I'm 70 years old and live in the sticks and brick and have to make decisions without any advice. That's it. Also, I have been out of my field of an industrial, commercial applications, I can still throw some basic hand tools around... Hahaha. I am impressed and have download it all your videos, especially the one about out of bounds. Thank you I'll make my own decisions based on technology and Common Sense
Loved this video, and love you, Bob! You are always so informative and positive, and I always feel uplifted after watching your videos. Wishing you the best! Xx
FYI - for accuracy - Pahrump, NV is not in the Sonoran desert - it's located in the Mojave desert. Check out Amazon for Shade Sails - very popular and work well -
Thanks for the video! The screens aren't a pretty arrangement but hey! if it works it's what counts! I just saw a video where people are staying in their air-conditioned vans, or having fans blowing on them outside. And they are in the FOREST. Jeez. Have a great day! 🙂
you are absolutely right BOB...bought this tarp i have and it just doesn't handle the wind well...shopping for the 16x20' for sure. Thank you for the info as always, TEAM RYOBI ;)
You my want to contrive to keep the cloth off of the nose of the trailer to avoid heat conduction. As you say, black absorbs heat energy, but being in contact with the metal it will heat the metal more than if there is even a 1" gap of air between them. But you are most certainly aware of this and simply contrived as well as practical in this situation/site.
Ty bob i learn so much from u! I have 2 do this! Just have to, if i dont ill just b so pissed @ myself.... Im looking 4 a van now. I havent seen anything worth my money.. Stay safe
Thankyou for your video's. A real pleasure each and every day. Keep up the great work and inspiration you give us. I have learned so much ad really appreciate it. :)
I would put lightweight storage cabinets with locks on the out side of the trailer for the cloths and misc. Or have a small United contractor trailer used they are reasonable
Bob, coyld you do a folliw up on how you are using shade now since you no longer have the trailer. That would be very helpful to me and others I think. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I sat under one these at a lake and it was wonderful I tried to find one but I wasn't sure what they were called so I could get it. Thank you for sharing your video with us 👍☝️👏😍🌵
I'm planning on trying Ehrenberg just before Thanksgiving and will be bring down part of a 12x500 foot roll for those folks that might need some. I sell it with my greenhouses so have extra. It will be $1.75 ( my cost) a running foot for anyone interested, so $35 for a piece 12x20. I can cut any length. I usually sell it to my pot growers for around $3.50 a running foot. Tried to put this on the forum last night and it got rejected as I don't have enough activity on my account yet. Happy camping Ghsebldr
we will be heading there as soon as it gets cool. thinking around middle of Oct. we are in Tucson right now spent the summer Boondocking around Flagstaff
ATWT I tried that end of October thing about 3 years ago. Being from the PNW I found the high 90s to 100 degree days a bit much. Hope to get a chance to meet you when it cools down a little more.
Hey Bob just a question, those of us who are interested in you as a person and enjoy all that you do. I use them to prepare for emergencies where I'd have to live in my truck
It applies to other countries as well
I lived in a home with no air conditioning, and the city would have about a month of extreme heat. I couldn't fall asleep when I was so hot. I use shade clothes for growing winter crops during the summer.

I USED TO DO THE SAME THING ON A BOAT I LIVED ON IN FL FOR A FEW YRS. REALL Y MADE A DIFFERENCE JUST SHADING ALL THE SURFACES.
I like the courtyard too.
Hey Bob, to decrease the size you can use vacuum packing bags.
I really like your style... cheap but not chintzy. Thank you for doing this!
Thx for sharing. We bought a used motorcoach. Its awning was gone. We were trying to figure out how to do this without spending a fortune. This is the answer. And we bought a couple yard plant poles to use for opposite end.

Bungee cords and a little knowledge of sunrise/sunset and the possibilities are endless.
Thanks dearly for sharing how to shade your vehicles from heat of sun. :)

Very helpful!
Shade cloth makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
just got one of these, and its works, even before i saw your vid, got the idea from seeing some one use it on his veg growing in his garden
I could use a system like this for controlling how much direct sun any outside garden plants I may be growing in the future! Thank you Bob for the idea!
Excellent ideas!!!! Thank you Bob!!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
That is my favourite setup, van and cargo trailer. Very nice.
Sorry you had such a bad experience, Bob. Looking forward to seeing the taller interior with your new storage. Thanks for sharing!

I don't fold material. When pliable material is rolled and tied with a innertube strips it has less bulk, is more manageable, and packs uniformly.
Always enjoy your videos Bob, I hope I can meet you someday and you are featuring me and my RV setup in one of your videos.
Wow, Bob, this is a very informative video. Thanks for sharing your experience and education. We're not in a dessert, but if we do go, I'm much better informed. You are so funny, can't get the shade cloths back into their pouches, eh? Lol.
Glad you posted this. I always forget to think about shade cloth. Thanks Bob. Aloha.

Hi Bob, excellent information 👍, you are saved as one of my favourites 💘, many thanks? Big Hugs from Australia 🇦🇺 🙋👍
Ahhhhhh....my home base!
even hot, it beats that Florida humidity anyday!
The hits just keep on coming.
Interesting! We were thinking tarps, but now I'm convinced shade cloth is better! Thanks!
bob I like your anti sun fort as usual you always display good sence thank you.
You’re the best for sharing your tips saves us a lot of time and money thank you

Awesome products Bob! Thanks for details on the shade cloth and cover and links for them. Love the reviews of nomad products❤😀
Loved this video, and love you, Bob! You are always so informative and positive, and I always feel uplifted after watching your videos. Wishing you the best! Xx
Costco shade cloth comes with attached ropes, very sturdy, was less than $20 if I remember correctly.
I am goin to use this on my frontporch for rest of summer.
FYI - for accuracy - Pahrump, NV is not in the Sonoran desert - it's located in the Mojave desert. Check out Amazon for Shade Sails - very popular and work well -
I use to live in Pahrump. When he says hot he means it. 115 for days even weeks at a time in the summer.
Fantastic video I live in Arizona, major challenge here. summer filled with triple digits.
A very useful video. More to think about as I plan out my own build. Thank you.
Really interesting & informative video, well put together in detail. Thanks Bob!
Bob your amazing can't wait to see you hopefully soon we are trying to get RVs together and we will be there soon.
Thanks for the video! The screens aren't a pretty arrangement but hey! if it works it's what counts! I just saw a video where people are staying in their air-conditioned vans, or having fans blowing on them outside. And they are in the FOREST. Jeez. Have a great day! 🙂

Ty bob i learn so much from u! I have 2 do this! Just have to, if i dont ill just b so pissed @ myself.... Im looking 4 a van now. I havent seen anything worth my money.. Stay safe
Excellent idea!! Thank you so much🙏🏻
Wow bob you are getting a lot of subscribers. Well deserved.
With the heat I just have to go north. But this is even great for up north. Love your channel.
Another helpful video Bob!
Good information, I have been wondering about how to get ready for sun and shade-making.
Bob, coyld you do a folliw up on how you are using shade now since you no longer have the trailer. That would be very helpful to me and others I think. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Great tip, thanks for sharing.
Yeah Baby I Love this Shade Cloth...
I sat under one these at a lake and it was wonderful I tried to find one but I wasn't sure what they were called so I could get it. Thank you for sharing your video with us 👍☝️👏😍🌵
Very nice that Bob.
Thanks for the helpful tips!!!
Bob, thanks for re-posting this! I tried to find it about a month or two ago and couldn't. Great timing!

Happy camping

Steve K will be looking you up. I carry an industrial sewing machine and grommet tools. We can modify to fit for anyone.
Sounds good ATWT. When are you planning on being in Ehrenberg?
we will be heading there as soon as it gets cool. thinking around middle of Oct. we are in Tucson right now spent the summer Boondocking around Flagstaff

Steve K : Same here. Those temperatures would cause me to wilt!
Love your work...great as usual.
Very interesting -- you are full of great ideas
I was wondering @ this..as usual great information..thanks again!!..
Hey Bob just a question, those of us who are interested in you as a person and enjoy all that you do. We feel like we know you, but we have seen all your tattoos but we don't know the meaning behind them. Have you ever considered doing a video telling us the significance behind them and where you were in your life when you got them
Excellent, thanks Bob desert nomad
this is exactly what I was thinkin I would do.
Absolutely great information. Love your channel.
Awesome thanks for sharing
Thanks for the helpful tips.
