What a great talent. Retired too soon but I hope he is enjoying life for he gave us such great music as fresh today as it was 50 years ago. Never get tired of it.

David Gates voice has never changed, and it seems strange seeing him as an older man still sounding like he did when he was in his twenties! Im not complaning one bit, the man is a legend.

Simply one of THE most prolific song writer/singers of this or any generation. David Gates' falsetto is among the best I've ever heard, comparable to the might Bee Gee's themselves. Though very different styles, the sound which Bread and Mr. Gates has given us, has stood the test of time! Few albums sold as well as this classic soft rock band did! Mr Gates has been inspiration to me, and to my generation for sure. For all those who listen hereafter, why on Country stage? Why in a country format? Because he was the essence of country before country knew what it was. A story teller, a lyrisist a musician and more. Melodies, harmony and a sound never before, or after heard. Bread rivaled such blazing stars as the Carpenters, Ambrosia and ballad driven bands of that era. This sound is pure...for a reason!

Watch the Gates/Campbell medley, when Gates starts vocally there is a "WOW"! expression on Campbell's face- he fights it, but, GC knew he had
the real deal with him that night. GC's falsetto is one with Gate's . Two massive talents together for a few minutes.

Robert , you get it, you really, really get it! ( I was channeling Sally Field there! ) That's what made the seventies so precious it was the songwriters that made all the difference they that really spoke to you! For the first time men were not railing against something but, well surrendering to their better emotions. And it was a beautiful world as a result. Generation Jones had the cream of the crop, I tell you!

When Gates sings in a particular musical key it's nearly always in 4th or 5th octave...it's his signature sound that identifies him above the rest!

Guitar Man literally was my anthem when it first hit the air waves. I was an 18 year old kid with dreams of rocking away the rest of my life but then I met my precious Teri. Career, family, military and love of the change in my life’s direction took over and by the mid ‘80s my new anthem became Bon Jovi’s Dead or Alive as I wistfully recalled my earlier dreams and allowed my V-twin to become my steel horse and my guitars to take a significantly less important part of my life. Now at 64, I still smile as I listen to Guitar Man while holding my Teri’s hand through the rest of our lives together. She’s so much more precious than any stage I could have hoped to stand on!
