I think they are solid watches. I still have all of mine that I grabbed between 2006-2012 era. I have all of the 45mm XLS chrono's in black and silver faces and the 45mm XLS alarm versions in black and silver. Also have a couple of the 43mm Maverick's with black face and a couple of the Dive Master 500's old and new versions. The older version I beat up every day as a work watch and I got it around 2006 or 2007. It finally has a problem after all these years of abuse, swimming and snorkeling. Still works fine but the face has shifted somehow so the 1 o'clock is now in the 12 o'clock position. Not sure if it is worth fixing, but it still functions. I think they are aesthetically some of the best looking and easiest to read watches even compared to the high end Rolex, Breitling, Omega, etc.
There are "dive" watches and then there are dive watches.It's well known that a 200m watch and a 200m dive watch are different in that one can hold water tight to that depth and still work when you surface.The other is fully functional while at that depth.What he meant.
