I have been invited to lead a music class with at risk teenagers. since there are no instruments (i.e. hand drums), I was thinking about using buckets or 5 gallon water bottles. I was debating whether to use hands or sticks. also, I wondered whether to play along with a track or try to create and improvise a beat. any thoughts?
charles stiebing That sounds awesome! I think doing BOTH improvisation and tracks would be great. Maybe start with tracks if this group is just forming so they don't feel too self conscious. I think playing with hands on the buckets might be uncomfortable but I have seen a lot of other teachers have success using chopsticks. Way quieter and not as much of a safety risk as drum sticks. You could have them start with chopsticks and then if they are progressing and you feel you can trust them you could switch to drum sticks later on. Wrap the drum sticks with tape though so they last longer! Hope that helps!! Good luck!!!
