Chuck understands where the problem is. Working class people won't spend their hard earned money to watch these games if they cannot even respect the players. We talking about multimillionaires who refuse to play a basketball game to entertain the fans paying their salaries. NBA is lucky basketball is the most global game in the world. Bingo. This is the answer, but it’s even before the play-in tournament started, which just further proves how much this change isn’t helping either.
The NBA changed their playoff format around the same time that load management became a problem, and they have been too stupid to understand what they did and how it changed their game. Yes, players are much lazier today than they used to be, but the players are lazier now because they can afford to be lazier now. The regular season no longer matters, and hasn’t mattered for nearly two decades now. Pop was the first to recognize this, but now the whole league (and their fans) have caught up.

Live by the sword, die by the sword. The NBA didnt want to promote and teach fans growing up to love their teams over the players like the NFL and MLB did and for a while in the 2000s it worked for the league as a whole, making money hand over fist marketing the players more than the franchises. Now comes the cost of that decision, they need superstars on every team and they need them playing continually. You dont see NFL fans saying they want their money back if a team switched to its backup QB or if the RB2 is starting because their star RB fumbled twice the previous game. Same with MLB with star starting Pitchers, or an off day for elite closers, etc. Their fans love their teams no matter what. NBA fans just want to see their guy play and if the team wins its a bonus.

NBA chases casual fans even knowing that it turns off die-hard fans. What happens when you catch the attention of the casual fans? They might watch for a while, but as they get closer to becoming real fans, they start to see the gimmicks. So the obvious problem is that the more someone watches NBA, the more frustrated they get and they stop watching. The NFL gives you an exciting game, but they don’t dumb it down. Football has a lot of moving parts and it takes time to understand the intricacies of it. It’s not a game for the casual fan to really understand. Yet it’s the one thing that in 2024 tens of millions of fans will sit in front of a television for over three hours to watch.

Sad thing is, the NBA USED to promote and teach fans about teams AND players. This was back in the 80s when I started watching the NBA. It's how I grew to love the game. I had--and still have--NBA VHS tapes from back then like "Michael Jordan: Come Fly With Me", "NBA Superstars" and "Dazzling Dunks and Basketball Bloopers" and each tape would have a segment on it that went over the history of the game--how it was invented by Dr. James Naismith, early stars of the sport, the Lakers/Celtics rivalry, Russell vs Chamberlain, the Knicks of the early 70s, Dr. J's dominance of the ABA and his arrival in the NBA, Bird vs Magic, and the coming of then young talent like MJ, Barkley and Olajuwon.
This is what made kids of my generation fans of the NBA. Unfortunately, the NBA doesn't do this anymore and young fans have NO interest in anything that came before 2016, it seems.

Many of today's players were groomed throughout their high school career by parents who wanted an NBA career for them and nepotism is spoiling almost every aspect of entertainment as children of those who earned their way are given opportunities that should go to someone else. Too many of today's players have a huge sense of their own importance and less real hunger for the game and you can feel it when some of them are playing. Just scoring and boring. They don't really pay attention to the game. So I don't know if all those commercials actually reach them because they are not even watching the game itself. This is why TBS would rather do college football than to overpay for the NBA. They know the real number and how much they actually make. Amazon is willing to overpay for the NBA package because they want to use it to get more people to sign on to their Prime package. Load management is not the ONLY problem in the NBA. There are no villains anymore. Back during the best era of NBA basketball, the league had Celtics, then Pistons, then the Knicks, and so on. The NBA got soft. The owners/commissioner wanted nothing but a shootaround 3 point league and took out the physicality. Imagine Steph Curry trying to make 3 point shots against the Bad Boy Pistons back in 1988. Salley would have broken his nose, Rodman would have broken his ribs and Laimbeer would have given him two concussions! They would have tested Curry's heart!! Just like they did with Jordan and Pippen! But since the league has been feminized, you can't foul opposing players anymore! Hence why the NBA is soft, weak and the ratings are going down the drain!

He'd be getting like 40 million with inflation, probably 90 million with today's money. I'm all for players getting the money. They are the product. Contracts should reflect the work they put in and the massive profit the league makes. Problem is, the rich have made so much obscene cash, they're building multi billion dollar stadiums, paying billions for teams, they of course offset expense with charging fans a ton more. We've been getting priced out for years and years. The invention of PSLs changed things for the worse. The weight is unsustainable.

It’s too late to get the fans who have left back. Once someone decides to stop watching it’s too late. Then if that fan has already went an entire playoff cycle they are never coming back. Maybe later if their kids get into it. Or a team moves to the area they live in. Their only real move is to try and get young people who are not fans to get interested in the game. They have earned every bit of this situation.
