It all depends on how you define cool. It's windy sometimes. And the price too was cool.

I can't wait to travel again. I have been to a lot of railway stations, but this is one of the most beautiful I've never seen in person. This will be on the top of my list when this is all over.

Returning to Hamburg from Ghent (Gent/Gand) two weeks ago, my wife and I found that the German ICE that we had booked from Brussels to Cologne was cancelled, and the next one after that (2 hours later) was too. So we decided to go on on the Belgian IC to Liège (where the ICE also stops...if it is actually going) and try to find another connection we could take, but didn't find one. So we spent about 3 1/2 hourse having a look at Liège. And I must say that this wonderful Calatrava rail station is (for me) the only real highlight we saw besides the cathedral. Since the next ICE (scheduled four hours later than the one we had booked) also came 15 minutes late, we had ample extra time to enjoy the architecture. Just to wrap this up, the connecting train from Cologne to Hamburg also ended up with a hefty delay due to technical problems, delivering us at our final destination 4 hours and 50 minutes later than originally scheduled. But at least we could marvel at Liège-Guillemins station.

Liège is a post-industrial city that never fully recovered and with a large immigrant population (plenty of similar cities in Germany as well). It's not considered a tourist destination by anyone in Belgium, so it's best not to judge it as one. The only real highlight is its train station, which cost way too much for such a relatively small and "nothing special" city. The nature and small towns, castles, etc outside of the city are a delight, though.

At the same time very impressive but not very cozy like railway stations used to be. I'd love to see plenty of flowers and green plants there to counterbalance the coldness of the concrete. But it is definetely very very impressive; especially compared to Leuven of to what will become the new station of Mechelen / Malines... Once they find the funds to go ahead. But, sorry valeureux Liègois... No station can topple Antwerp Central Station from the number one spot :)

And best of all there's no drug dealers and weird people at the station. All just normal folks hanging out!

I guess it was 6 or 7 o'clock in the morning on a Sunday. But well, yes, compared to Brussels South and North, it looks like paradise on the railroad tracks.
