  • Nobody likes hearing their name mispronounced, whether they're your friend or coworker - or a famous Hollywood celebrity. Amanda Seyfried is no exception. She constantly struggles with teaching people to say her last name correctly. After sitting down to chat about her upcoming films Gone and Lovelace, the actress opened up to our correspondent Thomas Leupp about the most common mispronunciations of her name.

      Who cares how she pronounces... We should care about how it's correctly pronounced and it's "Zyfreed" (in English spelling), because it's a German surname... but, of course, you can pronounce -- incorrectly -- anyway you want it... mind is free... you can say it "zeefroo" or even some nonsense like "qwertyuiop"...

    Speaking as a Siegfried myself, I thought it was a variant, too. However, there were Siegfrieds in America as early as ~1720 and Seyfrieds at about the same time (per the Seyfried genealogy forums). So, if the Seyfrieds represent a variation or mispelling of Siegfried, the change happened in Germany. The first Siegfried in the US first wrote his own name Sigfridt...I suspect that spelling was not everyone's strong point back then.

      +herba Right? I really want an actual German speaking actor to point it out to her, that she pronounces it like if she were Swedish. It makes me giggle because she seems quite serious with the way she pronounces her own surname.

    • @wonderlandisalanguage9646
      @wonderlandisalanguage9646 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The Hamster Except a lot of names from countries all over the world can be pronounced differently by different people... A simple example is Harry Potter: in Britain people almost pronounce the 'a' and 'tt' the French way, whereas people in America pronounce the 'a' almost like they do the 'e' in 'men' and the 'tt' almost as if it were a 'd'. It's not the same thing, of course, but you can imagine that if there is already a difference in the pronunciation of certain words within countries which's official language is the same then surely there's gonna be a difference in pronunciation when that word is used by person from another country, especially when it comes to last names because the same last name might be pronounced differently from family to family.

She's the only thing I liked(Even liked a lot) about "Gone" because she seemed like the only person who TRIED to make something good here and I wanted to see her make it through.

    lol I have been pronouncing her last name like her sister for forever! Who is correct?? I don't know. BTW this interview is a little odd. I'm not sure what it is but at times she looks a little dazed and as if she is thinking about other things besides the interviewers questions. Oh well she is human she doesn't have to be perfect maybe it's her personality.

      :) but it's how we pronounce it in Germany,like "Zy-frred",it's a soft s in the beginning,not like the s in "sigh" and it's a long "ee" sound and of course no "american r" ;)
