    In part 2 we removed the instrument cluster once again. The temp/fuel/oil gauge cluster was removed and we were able to repair the temperature gauge. It now reads correctly and is nice and steady. Both the fuel and temperature gauges would jump around when you tapped on the instrument cover or the dash. This issue has been corrected as well. It was a connectivity issue. Stay tuned to part 3 of this series to see how we fixed the instrument cluster illumination problem permanently.
    Tools and materials:
    - Fluke multi-meter
    - JB Weld Plastic Bonder
    - 600 grit wet/dry sand paper
    - White lithium grease to lubricate the odometer reset button.

      Once the connections are cleaned up , recommend some electrical anti-oxidant be applied to the gauge mounting points on the circuit board prior to reassembly.

    That is one of the worst "melted" clusters I've seen!! But a great mod is led drop in replacements for the big bulbs. No heat and they dont melt everything. Also are way brighter than the old units. They are not overly bright but it looks so much better. Highly recommend the led. But you would need to source a new cluster housing to fix the plastic prism things that reflect the light back onto your gauges. Get one from an 86 or newer car to avoid that spotty look and better plastics. The work you do is spectacular

      I added LED bulbs in part 3. This video was getting too long. Thanks for the kind words.

      @@ImpalamansGarage You might be able ti actually FIX the melted light tunnels. I am not sure if it's possible yet, but I am experimenting with resurfacing the deformed portions and polishing the outer surface.

    Thanks for taking us along and for you constant patience. I got a new 300SD & my 2 gauges are very erratic too.
    I'm gona try your fix!
    Probably too late to mention but next time you have the instrument cluster out think about re-painting the gauge hands. I used a hot orange color almost fluorescent they stand out & look good.
    Thanks Again

      Hello David. I perform a refurbishment of the cluster in a later video. Removed the annoying dots and painted the needles. I was pleased with the outcome.

    Deoxit is really the way to go instead of sand paper in these situations if you can as scratching them up usually makes the problem go away and them come back worse later. The south being so moist is really annoying sometimes.

      Agree. An antioxidant would be best. I should have done that. I usually do this on all my 120v AC pojects and 12v battery terminals but not the smaller stuff. Need to reevaluate! Great tip!

    Hello again sir...sensors.????..1 on thermostat housing...and 1.on left side.eng.under fuel steel lines..having trouble replacing them...I took old 1 out. Thermostat housing..the specs from it is. European..500 ser...but is it the right 1...

    • @ImpalamansGarage

      The engine coolant temperature sensor which provides output to the temperature gauge in the dash is on the driver's side of the engine below the fuel lines. The sensor on the thermostat housing is for the climate control system. It prevents the climate control from blowing cold air if you turn on the heater with a cold engine. The climate control blower will not blow until the engine reaches 40 C. www.benzworld.org/threads/two-temp-sensors.1569014/

    I just overhauled my cluster, fully torn apart. Removed plexiglass (wet sand and buffed) , outer bezel, rear frame, painted gauge needles (orange) and painted everything flat black to remove the primer spots that bleed through the old finish. However now the dash illumination lights and center console lights are dead. changed the rheostat from a spare cluster and still does not light up.

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well if you've not done so, check your fuses first. The center console lights should not have been affected by anything you were doing unless you did not disconnect the battery and shorted a wire somewhere and blew a fuse. If no fuses are blown I would check to ensure you have power coming into the cluster. Remove it from the dash and check voltages at the wiring harness, with battery connected obviously.

    • @MrStroller4u
      @MrStroller4u 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ImpalamansGarage It came down to the red fuse mounted on the back of the instrument cluster cluster, mind you, its a 2nd gen W126. It provides power to the "K6" terminal block connecting to the instrument illumination control unit. Lesson learned, ALWAYS disconnect your battery.
