My sister became a master diver while her husband was stationed with Air Force, in Republic of Panama. She occasionally helped out with training special forces.
She told me one time, a trainee was thrown into a pool, hands and feet tied. They have to pick up a rock and return to the surface. She was in the pool as a safety measure.
One trainee was in great difficulty but refused to let her help him.
She finally surfaced and looked at the officer in charge, who said "Let the damn fool drown."
Well, no he finally accepted her help and got topside -- but without the rock.

Interesting that the fire fighter first used his helmet then boots as a makeshift flotation device. Quite surprised the 02 tank did not float very well, I guess the straps and backplate mitigated any buoyancy from any air in the tank.

Tory sorry to burst your bubble I refilled scba bottles at my first job when I was employed by a fire department sorry to tell you that scba the firefighting breathing Cylinder does not contain oxygen it contains special compressed air it would be dangerous to use oxygen in a fire situation as it will accelerate combustion and could explode does it sound logical to go in to a burning building with a tank on your back that could explode due to high heat? and or possibly make a fire worse upon detonation? I oxygen I would imagine is very dangerous and would imagine would take more than a couple of minutes to understand how to recharge such a cylinder safely as for differnces water fire extinguishers are ususally charged with compressed air it would be unsafe to charge a fire extinguisher with oxygen so yes scientifcally there is a differnce that could result in death if a mistake was made I really think you need to take more chemistry classes! or learn how fire equipment works!
