My grandmother passed away in 2015 at 105. She would have so enjoyed your videos. She and her 6 sisters plowed their farm in Oklahoma in the 20s. When we would go to museums and she would see plows she would talk about the hours in the fields she loved horses and really loved to garden even after moving to California. She had a huge garden until she passed. You’re a great teacher Jim and we’re very patient. Great pupil too Brenda loved this!

Jim and Brenda; I LOVE this showing. One question , if Brenda is your loving wife wouldn't it more fun to put her on your lap and you teach her how to do the levers on the ends until she has had enough time to watch you and how and when it is time to move the levers? I grew up cultivating corn rows with my bro. driving while I handled the cultivator sections

The best WAY to teach another, is to DO the Whole Procedure 5 times yourself ( lots of visual cues)&( NO saddle time) in a progressive manner. There is a LOT of particular controls, Splict-second timing to smoothly COORDINATE the Whole Complex Proceedure. This is NO EASY Task to master, it "Might" be Easier to Pilot a Commercial Airliner. This was a Very Good exaple of how TOUGH "old-style" farming used to be. Precision plowing with "Draft Horses" is pure "Artwork". The highly skilled Horses Realy seem to "Know what's going On". Thank you for the great Video Sir & Mam and happy plowing.

I so enjoy the videos you two create. Excellent instructional video on the complexities of plowing. I greatly admire Brenda for giving it a go even though she didn't fully understand the necessary mechanical interactions of the plow. You learn timing and know how by doing. She has a good mentor and Jim, your patience in talking her through the process was probably the primary reason she didn't get flustered. Buck and Ken's calm demeanor surely made it a much more enjoyable experience for her as well. If she truly wants to plow, from what I saw in the video, she can surely master it. The two of you having fun at the end of the video was a pleasant bonus. God bless you both.

My dad told me of him plowing this way when he was a young boy. He said the mules would always turn towards the barn at the end of the row that faced in the direction of the barn. He also said that the mules would plow faster heading towards the barn as opposed to heading away. You have confirmed his story however, I never doubted him. Thank you for filming this. I was thinking of dad while watching, God rest his sole.

I really enjoyed this video. When I was a young lad, I would rake our back field with my great-grandfather (born in 1882) with a one-horse rake. I would sit on the seat between his legs, and we would drag the hay back to the barn. Pitch it into the mound and salt it between layers. I wish it was possible to go back to the best days of my life. Thanks for a great video.

My great uncle used to tell of plowing on the river side of the levee along the Mississippi, south of Nauvoo, Il. He stopped once to watch the riverboat passing and soon was waving at the folks waving and cheering at him. When he turned back to his work he saw his team just cresting the levee. He was born in 1892.

My dear friend John, passed on in early eighty’s, was born in Iowa in 1900.
He learned to farm on horse power then later with steam then gasoline powered equipment.
His school work from childhood was in German.
He came to Montana with family in 1919 and helped the grain production operations.
The finest man I ever knew and as a boy I got to help him plow with his then John Deere model D, model A, model 70 and Oliver Cletrac tractors. At harvest time we used his 1946 Chevrolet ton and a half to haul thirty miles one way to elevator. Non dump bed they would raise whole truck to empty grain.
I still drive my 51 Chevrolet half ton near daily with very similar mechanics
We would oft plow from before sunrise and not pull the pin till dusk. The sound of those tractors forever in my soul.
It instilled a love for my homeland words cannot express entirely.
The very soil we return to.
    Brenda did wonderful.

I think Brenda is really tough, most people would not like to be on camera by learning this the first time, I'm very impressed.
My father teached me plowing with two horses when I was a boy for 50 years ago, with an older and more simple type of plow that they normally used more than 100 years ago, without the wheels and seating, your plow for horses was nice and your plowing was very good.
It's of course important to set a tractorplow to glide easily in the soil too, if not it will go heavier and will not close like your nice plowing.

I understand what Brenda was talking about with the feeling. Years ago, when I worked in a factory, I said something to a guy I worked with about plowing. I said about looking back at the dirt rolling over and getting a strange feeling. He chuckled and said, kinda gets in the blood don't it.
He farmed several hundred acres, I only had my ten, but I knew that special feeling.
Another interesting and informative video. Thank you
    Have a good day.

Way to go Brenda, you did an excellent job for the first time, it looks really difficult to drive the horses and manage the plow 🦓

You guys have the perfect weather to try this this way. Brenda has a fell for the rains which is a good place to be when driving a standard

I think a little trick for Brenda when starting a new furrow, don’t worry about using a hand to move the lever back to the vise-grip. Just push the foot pedal and the plow should get sucked down/back by the horses motion. Once it hits the vise-grips take your foot off the pedal and you’re all set.

I don't know anything about plowing but I think it takes some practuce to build up some muscle memory to get the hang of it. Think of all the skill sets you need to do this!
