The one I felt bad for was Prince He, as he really loved the Empress. He had her back until the end.

why people always say Empress Nara was a villain she was literally still one of the only sincerely good people left in the palace eventhough she was wronged by literally everyone around her... she never harmed good people ever

@@user-ix1rp9ff3p i know... but she never actually harmed anyone who isnt already evil... even tho in the series she personally killed Chun Guifei. Chun Guifei and Jia Guiren actually deserve it.. in matter of Gao Guifei too.. Its not like Ling Fei didnt kill ErQing

@@rianevans474 She harmed Empress Fucha though Noble Consort Chun. She manipulated Chun through her feelings for Fuheng, and knew that Yongcong was Rongyins everything. She helped push an innocent woman who has done her know wrong and actually tried to help her to her death (Shushen was managing the Harem at the time so she could make the arrangements. And bare in mind, she entered the Palace the same time as Gao, Jia and Chun so she knew the Empress longer than Yinglou. She knew her character and took advantage of her weaknesses) and had a hand in harming an innocent child.
She also tried to harm Concubine Rong who caused no one harm (when she first appeared in the harem. Yes, she tried to harm Yinglou and Fuheng through the Emperor's jealousy) because Rong 'bewitched the Emperor' (this is only half the reason. Yes, Rong was playing innocent and sweet to the Emperor but Shushen was also jealous of the attention she was receiving as she was a young renown beauty from a distant tribe). And wanted Yinglou to take the fall as she had lost favour at the time.
Then, there's the lady who did the lotus tattoo on Shushens back after she got burned. Granted, she heard Shushen's plans but she too was killed off and Shushen didn't even bat an eye. She just had a cold smile on her face. What harm had that lady done to anyone? Her only sin was hearing the wrong thing at the wrong time.
As much as I love both Empresses and their characterizations in Yanxi, Shushen is not completely innocent. There's innocent blood on her hands, too. If anything, Charmaine Shehs Hoifanara Shushen is a cautionary tale - never love anyone more than you do yourself. (She played her role very well as did the rest of the cast).
But at the same time, this is just a fictional retelling of Qianlongs era. We'll never know what actually happened to Empress Nara as the details are so obscure. Considering how strictly traditional the times wore, we can speculate that she was pushed so far that she cut her hair.
Personally I'll always have empathy for the real Empress Nara and Shushen. They were human at the end of the day but I respectfully disagree that she did no harm to innocent people. Having Yuan Chunwang mastermind her downfall was her karma for the sins she commited.

@@JodesDaPhee again thats because she believed the empress had hand in being able to save her brother but didnt because it would harm her image.. she never wanted to to harm the Empress Fuca child either that was just a byproduct of Chun Guifeis revenge on Empress Fuca.. and as for Shushen the empress was right when she told Ling Fei she isnt who she claims to be she was a cruel person Empress Nara was just protecting herself and the peace in the Harem. even historically or in ruyi royal love Empress nara doesnt show evil tendencies

    • @JodesDaPhee

@@rianevans474 As I said in my original comment, we don't know what actually happened to Empress Nara historically. Both Ruyi and Yanxi are just filling in the blanks of what may have happened. Not only to her but to all of the Concubines and Empresses of every dynasty. Bare in mind, the reputation of the royal family always came first and history isn't always reliable. Don't assume that what we see is fact.
One example is Wu Zetian whom men wrote about and vilified (yes she was ruthless and cunning. You had to be considering the time and the environment. Especially as she became the first and only female Emperor - that path is paved in blood. I cannot comment on her personality as we will never know and can only go by history) - but she was a highly capable and talented Emperor and many future rulers adopted her policies. Any woman who broke the mold of tradition would be looked down on in history. We simple do not know what actually happened.
Another example is Consort Ling - history said she was a loving woman heavily favoured by Qianlong. If a woman follows traditions and womanly virtues, she is favoured in history. Look at Ling here in Yanxi, we love and cheer for her as she is no no nonsense, cunning and manipulative, playful and highly intelligent, but she's also flawed. She was stubborn, she was reckless and driven by vengeance for her sister. It nearly got her killed in the beginning. Now in Ruyi, she is greedy for power, narcissistic and killed many people, including her own mother and lover but it never was enough. Most fans couldn't stand her. Who are we to say if Ling in Yanxi or in Ruyi is more accurate to the historical one?
What I respectfully contested in your comment was the notion that Shushen didnt harm anyone. Yes, she was driven to extremes due to her families downfall but she still has blood on her hands regardless. Fact is, she made Chun her blade to get rid of Rongyin. Though she didn't physically kill her, she orchestrated it by manipulating Chun. She also indirectly killed Rongyin and Yongcong. Shushen is no saint, she's human who was pushed to her limits. Though I sympathize with her and understand her actions and the fact that harem life was hard, she still killed innocent people - i.e. Rongyin, Yongcong, wanted to killing Rong for being 'bewitching', and that innocent tattoo lady as well.
Im not taking away from her trails and tribulations, but she's well rounded despite her flaws. It's the same with Ruyi as well. (Zhou Xun acting was top notch and I adore Ularana Ruyi's character) objectively speaking, she was too nice and too kind as an Empress, and that was her weakness, her downfall. She relied too much on the past love she had for Qianlong and their relationship deteriorated over time until she was indifferent to him.
Shushen's downfall was loving someone more than she did herself and it was only a matter of time before her wicked acts caught up with her through Yuan Chunwang.
I suppose we can agree to disagree on the matter but Shushen is not a purely good character. She's morally grey but human. Like most of the cast in Yanxi and Ruyi. Historically, we will never know. We can debate about it but we will never know regardless.

This is what you get when you marry or love a king or emperor. There is no love story in a palace. One has the ultimate power and other only deserves to serve? The emperor and everyone are pointing at the empress and accusing her of having an affair when the emperor goes off to different concubines every night?! He can sleep with countless women, fall in love with one but the wives in the harem have to keep themselves dedicated to him even if that means being celibate? No matter how fascinated we become with the ancient palace life, we should never forget how cruel life was back then.

This story has really impressive love story and how the characters all has strong love reason behind their action. Nara might kills and caused death as well, but it's because she love the Emperor dearly. How Fuheng and Yingluo loved each other without even saying it, protecting each other, even the Emperor know the two person love each other and is so important for the Emperor.
And even other form of love like narcistic, parental, familial love, devotion. Also hates and cunningness in order to survive. I really wish I can watch the whole episodes one day.
