    I have decided this video is extremely important despite me not having a rat and being allergic to fur.

    I just spent $240 going to an exotic animal hospital over an hour away last weekend because all of the exotic vets with normal practices take the weekend off... all of them. What frustrates me greatly is the medicines were like $30 each, when one dog pill of baytril would be $2 for the same amount of medicine. I wish it wasn't so overpriced, and that I could just get the stuff on my own to be honest. it might have been cheaper at one of the normal vets, but they weren't an option and he needed help that same day. I don't know what I can do for next time because I really can't afford that again anytime soon. I can afford the medicine, but not everything else. And I don't need a vet to hear his breathing for a second and be like "yup infection, here's your meds" for an extra $70 just for that two second interaction. And the way they brought him back into the room holding him by the scruff with a towel... He refused to leave my shoulder for hours after we left he was so scared of them. I'm getting mad again. Rant over :(

    I agree that having antibiotics are essential! I would have lost some of my babies if I didn't have them on hand.

    Thank you so much, Shadow. A home kit is always a smart idea until you can get your little family member to the vet.

    Honestly, thank you so much for this video. I'm getting rats within the next few months and I'm stocking up on supplies so a medical kit has been something ive been struggling to put together. I really appreciate this ♡

    I’m planning on making a video of our rat emergency kit. I keep any leftover medication from our rats at the vet. Our vet gives us baytril in large doses as needed because we are an hour away with 8 girls. He specializes in exotic pets which is such a relief. You have a lot of similar items to what we have. We also keep a ton of syringes. The kit was especially handy for our girl Opal.

    What a great and helpful video! On the coconut oil, it’s especially great to use with “hairless” (double Rex) rats. They sometimes need extra moisturizing, and edible oils are great for their skin. I soak a small piece of bread in olive oil or coconut oil and give it to my hairless girl, who eats it eagerly, and then when she grooms afterward she distributes the oil over her skin. She’s always had healthy skin and I do think the oil helps.

    Love your first aid kit. I would suggest Bene-Bac Small Animal Powder for when your rats need to be on antibiotics for a while.

    I would always add "moo mix" or "weight up baby" into any first aid kit. I don't think any online stores sell them in the US but Rat Rations sells "moo mix" in the UK. It's basically a soakable mix for rats to help them gain weight quickly and I would've lost my boy Woody multiple times without it. Isamu Rats here on TH-cam has 2 videos on it, one for the initial soakable mix and one for the moo mix. The moo mix is 2 scoops soakable mix, 2 scoops of complan (complan is similar to ensure but only comes in a powder)(banana flavour and chicken flavour both seem to be favourites among rats), 1 scoop coconut milk powder, 1 scoop desiccated coconut. It's not nutritionally complete with that recipe, but the soakable mix is, so I'm sure you could alter the recipe to include more soakable mix so it is nutritionally complete. I hope this helps someone.

    I think that a really cool trick you should train your rats to do is play Jenga, or at least a version of it. Hope you have a nice day!

    I just wanted to say that I can understand your nervousness with showing that you have antibiotics but having these could be the difference between your pet living or dying and having them as an emergency essential is just good preparation. If people are overly sensitive then they're silly because it's the same stuff the vet would give but you could give it quicker!!

    Two things can be true at once. First I am behind you 100 percent to have those antibiotics on hand. I keep it on hand. A rats health can deteriorate faster than you can geff them to a vet. I have heard of vets not prescribing meds that were needed or not providing a long enough course of treatment. I have heard of ppl not being able to afford the vet care if a respiratory infection affects an entire large mischeif. And secondly I am also 100 percent in favor of getting vet care for your rats should they fall ill. Heck I am in favor of wellness exams every 6 mo to a yr.

    Being a rat owner for over 30 years YES.. very recommendable video and always keep back up meds... I always keep a bottle of a Baytril injectable and put it in avocado or whatever food because it taste bad... not recommended for any younger Rats less than six months.
    Used to get Doxy in powder form and make up my own when needed, but new laws in California I can’t get it and it now has to be compounded by my vet.
    Azithromycin.. same
    Rats seem to always get sick after hours late on weekends ... just to walk in emergency is $169!! 😫
    Thank goodness I’ve been going to the same vet for all these years and they all call me the Ratlady so any orders I call in, I don’t have to bring my rat in and pay a visit charge
    If anybody can find the rat book by Debbie Ducommon... it’s excellent and gave copies to all my vets and they learn from it..
    you always have a great video I’m sorry for your losses... I just cry so hard when you have a loss but I love your videos!! ❤️to your babies!

    My vet allowes me to get antibiotics without seeing him if they start showing signs just incase. I have to see him minimum 6 months but he understands the sooner they are on medicine the better and see him for proper help

    Do you possibly have a link to the nebulizer you purchased or do you have any recommendations for good ones?

  • @snowyowl611
    @snowyowl611 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a question is there anywhere you can get antibiotics without having to see a vet?
    I just lost one Saturday due to respiratory issues, if I had an antibiotic she wouldn't have had to be euthanized. I have a nebulizer (my son has asthma). I used that on my Pepper but still ended up at the ER ($350) later and I'm waiting for her remains. I got Chester and Chris to a vet willing to see them immediately and they are on Ciprofloxacin for the pneumonia that another exotic vet said saline nebulization would clear up.
    I'm so upset cuz if I had the antibiotics I could have saved Pepper ( and she would have gained weight again too).
    Thanks for all your videos they are so helpful.

  • @TheSpudChick
    @TheSpudChick 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a question. How do you use the nebuliser? I have a rat that has pretty bad respiratory issues and requires one. I currently use my carrier and cover it up with a towel. How else could I use it?

    • @sinandcyanide7505
      @sinandcyanide7505 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's really the best method. You could also put some air holes in a small-ish plastic container and then make a home just big enough for the nozzle from the nebulizer so it's kind of an enclosed chamber. This is similar to what I use for my rescue kittens with aspiration pneumonia that are needing oxygen.

    Hello I know I am watching this video late, but I have a very important question. I don’t have children’s Tylenol at my house, but I do have children’s acetaminophen. I am very worried because on your dosing chart, it isn’t listed and I tried googling it but that didn’t work. Is this considered the same as children’s Tylenol meaning that I can use the dosing chart for the children’s Tylenol for the usage of children’s acetaminophen or is it different. If it is different, Is it ok to give rats children’s acetaminophen, and if so, in what quantities?

    You show a bird antibiotic kit but don't list a link where we can buy it. That would be really helpful information right now with the pandemic as getting an appointment with a vet is near impossible. Other than that, the video is very helpful. Thanks.
