I'm in Canada and I currently mix Reggie Rat and Oxbow Essentials Adult rat food together to make my base mix, but we really are hurting for a good rat muesli here in North America as far as I am aware. Because Reggie Rat is high in wheat, I do not add wheat to any other part of their mix (gluten free pasta made from rice; corn, rice, and oat cereals for the processed grains). But I still wish we could get Harrison's banana brunch here, or at least something comparable. Thanks very much for the video, though! I think in North America it is pushed that we have to feed our rats a block diet because otherwise they will just pick out their favourites, but my rats LOVE their mix. They eat every piece of it. You just can't keep their bowls full 100% of the time. And honestly, some rats will get fat even on blocks if they are free-fed. There are so many benefits to feeding a diverse mix rather than just a block, in my opinion, and more people should know about the option.

    • @mistymoon883
      @mistymoon883 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You are spot on, we are really hurting for good rat mixes plus information & resources that are specifically for Canada. I’m only just starting into making my own mix and I’m finding it nearly impossible to do with adding in the oxbow. I also have spent a hour picking out stuff from “rat food” I bought before , it’s so freaking frustrating that commercial rat food mixes are full of stuff they shouldn’t have!
And trying to figure out what they shouldn’t have is a big issue too, it seems like it’s a matter of opinion not fact based research. ☹️

I'm so pleased you made this video. As I am big dumdum, I found the Isamu video a little difficult to get my head around. She's great and knows her stuff, but having someone who's clearly a lot more comfortable being in front (or in this case, behind) a camera made it a lot easier to follow. You helped simplify a few of the things I learned from watching her video and I'm sure I'm not the only one in this boat.

I mix my own mouse food! My babies really like it and eat most of it :) but I don’t know if you can find all of these ingredients in your country, I live in Austria and we have a store that sells most of these ingredients

      - [ ] 250g 6-grain mixture (wheat, rye, spelt, barley, spring oats, millet)
      - [ ] 200g buckwheat
      - [ ] 400g of fine seeds (grass seeds, swamps, millet, knotweed, cornflower, chamomile, poppy, pansy, bird mice, goosefoot, clover seeds and spinach seeds)
      - [ ] 1 kg of exotic bird food (La Plata millet, senegal millet, manna millet, Japanese millet, silver millet, canary seed, nigers seed, red millet, wheat semolina)
      - [ ] 200g of wild seeds
      - [ ] 100g oatmeal
      - [ ] 100-150g herbs
      - [ ] 80g unsweetened cornflakes
      - [ ] 50g Linseeds
      - [ ] 5-10 spoons of complete rat & mouse

That looks yummy! I saw instructions for that diet when I was looking at making my own rat food, but I just can't find the rabbit food part here in Canada. I found another recipe that was very simple and flexible but I was worried about missing vitamins and minerals, so I mixed mine 50-50 with some good quality rat kibbles. In the rest of the mix I did as much variety as possible. It ended up more expensive than regular rat food, but the quality of the ingredients is much better. I just feel a bit insulted when I feed my girls and they go for the rat kibbles first, after all that effort I put in.

    • @mistymoon883

I’m also in Canada and my search for the rabbit food came up empty too! I’m currently using oxbow as my base mix, I found a “bad” rat mix and picked out the dried corn, raisins and dried fruit chunks and I’m using it as part of my seed & cereal portion.
I’m struggling with finding a good dried vegetable mix. It seems like they all have mostly hay or alfalfa but I’m not giving up yet.
I wish we had more Canadian resources for rats, in my city there is only one registered breeder and they are very small and less knowledgeable than I am (in my opinion)
Maybe it’s time to start something myself 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @kinahthecat

@@mistymoon883 where in Canada are you? I am around Montreal, and it is weird to see how different online communities give different advice about many things. It might be worst here because of the language barrier and most people look for French sources of information, which all seem to come from a single breeder here as well. We really need better information in Canada. If you do start something, let me know. ;-)
For my food, I didn't use a seed mix at all. I went with a recipe that was using human ingredients. For the veggies, I have a dehydrator, so I made my own. It was mostly greens from my garden, but I will do more variety next time.
