This decision leads to consequences that reverberate across space and time. The Oxford 5 weren't actually based on one character. All of them have corresponding characters later in the series. I thought it worked really well, but maybe that's because I was familiar with the source material.

      Thanks for clarifying that for me. Because I read several reviews and recaps to try to get ready for my review so I could have a better understanding of the source material. Several people said that those characters were mostly based on one character. And obviously, since I’m not familiar with the source material, I couldn’t verify that lol. So I appreciate the clarification.

      @Boblovesmovies Yes, it was excellent although the first book is very science heavy and hard to understand. I also recommend the Chinese TV show. I saw it on Amazon, not sure if it's still there.

    The oxford 5 aren't 1 character split into 5. It's 4 characters turned into 5... because jack is a fun counterpoint.
    2 of the five play different parts of 1 role important in book one, but that book 1 role is essentially abandoned in 2 and 3 and isnt well deceloped in 1. Doing it this way allowed 1 of the 2 characters who fulfill 1 charaters role in season 1 to actually have a BIG character arc in all 3 seasons.
    I LOVE that they did this because character continuity isnt very strong in the books. The characters reflect ideas more than arcs of development. But for a show its far more satisfying to have character continuity and development. Connecting yhe story arcs in all 3 books to the oxford 5 really gives the narrative a core cast through which to view the coming insanity in this sprawling epic.

    • @Boblovesmovies
      @Boblovesmovies  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, someone else clarified that for me earlier. I don’t know why it was being said out there that they were based on one character if that’s not the case. Forgive my ignorance on this one as I’m coming at this from an outsider perspective.

      @@Boblovesmovies it's OK, its not obvious who the "five" are supposed to be until the season develops. So a lot of the fan-geek ridicule on this really missed what's going on.

      I never read the book, but my interest level to do so went up because of the series. My understanding is they took some creative liberties especially with the characters and locations. I would be curious what the differences are as well.

      So the main story beats of the books remain pretty unchanged, but characters and timelines get reworked. Characters and events from all 3 books are present in the first season, with some of the characters from books 2 and 3 doing things that were done by the book 1 protag. All in all I feel really good about this adaptation, as it set the story up for the next 2 books just perfectly. If it gets another season, it'll be getting right into the meat of the next two books which is arguably the best parts of the trilogy.

      For me, season eight was very rushed. I think they should’ve spent the entire season on the white walkers and done a season nine to finish the storyline with the throne. I also don’t feel like they paid off what had been set up in the previous seasons, but nothing wrong with liking it. There are a lot of movies/shows I like that people hated. That’s the beauty of art, it’s all subjective.

    Perhaps for viewers who haven't read the original work, this show is still acceptable. However, if you are a reader of the original work, you won't be satisfied. Many important plotlines from the book have been significantly cut, to the extent that some of Luo Ji's actions cannot be adequately explained. For example, in the Three-Body game, it takes many games to gradually uncover the basic appearance of the Three-Body world, which is much more complex than depicted in the show. Secondly, Ye Wenjie made a decision at the time, but in her later years, she realized the seriousness of the issue and tried to save it. Her ideology was completely different from Evans'; she hoped that extraterrestrial civilizations could assist humans in building a better world, while Evans harbored hatred towards humanity, hoping that extraterrestrial civilizations would come to Earth to destroy humanity and thus save other species. The cosmic blink is a terrifying phenomenon. The cosmic background radiation from over 13 billion years ago now presents a countdown for someone on Earth. This is a terrifying story that is enough to shatter the lifelong faith of a scientist. However, the show seems to portray it as a simple blinking effect created with a mobile app. In the original work, this blinking can only be observed through specific satellites or receiving systems, or high-tech glasses; ordinary people are unaware of how serious the blink is. The Wallfacer Project is also a challenge to imagination, but the show evidently fails to explain the basic logic of the Wallfacer Project: when the sophons are monitoring everyone's actions everywhere, your behavior, whether true or false, cannot be judged by others. You might be performing to deceive the Trisolarans, or you might be genuinely doing something. That's why no matter how the Black Brothers explain it, I still give up the identity of the Wallfacers and get shot by the gunman, because since you have been called a Wallfacer, your behavior is confusing, and no one knows whether you have already started performing.

      Yeah to me, it’s pretty good but then again, I’m reviewing it as a TV show and not as an adaptation. I am seeing that a lot of fans are split with the adaptation itself. Thanks for the insight. @@Boblovesmovies For non-Chinese readers, the original novel may pose some difficulties. If you're not very familiar with or interested in modern Chinese history, you can skip those chapters. Indeed, some of those chapters are overly lengthy. All you need to know is that many painful experiences led Ye Wenjie to make the choice to bring about the arrival of extraterrestrial civilizations. Additionally, while the trilogy of this novel series shares the same universe or worldview, each of the three books has its own tone and style. This show chooses to advance the storylines of all three books together (although theoretically, these characters are indeed from the same period), which is a challenge. American and Chinese audiences have different ways of consuming stories. I admit that Americans have better control over pacing, making the story faster and more engaging, which is something Chinese writers should learn. Also, there is a Chinese show with English subtitle based on this novel that you can search for then you don't need to read the books. Many plot points from the show are also in Netflix, but the storytelling pace of the Chinese version may be too slow for you, and you may find it dull.
