I always wonder how good BMW M550d would be at cannonballing. You can see on test drive videos how effortlessly those cars accelerate and combining that with diesel MPG. But sadly those cars didn't came in North America :(
I believe this run they had two or three, and yeah once they take off they start timing and once they reach Cali they stop. There's a podcast of them somewhere talking about the runs, try Tedward's channel something titled '3 cannonball runs in 6 months'
It's a time trial from NY to LA in one drive. The current record is 25hr 39min. As for the drivers, you can pretty much do whatever you want. Most teams go with 3 people. Usually 2 drivers and 1 in the back talking to spotters, transferring fuel from the fuel cell to the main tank, and all the other stuff that would distract the 2 in the front. Back in the original cannonball Run and US Express days, most drove 2 seater sports cars so they only had 2 people. A few insane people do it solo, the current official solo record is 27hr 54min. Supposedly Fred Ashmore set the solo record with a 25hr 55min in a rental mustang, but there's been a lot of evidence showing that he faked the time.
