  • Celebrated and spoofed by audiences across the globe, the Eurovision Song Contest has become something of a cultural institution since its launch in 1956.
But behind the flamboyant performances and even more outlandish outfits, the annual contest is also seen as a vehicle of political and economic powerplay.
In 2023, that’s more the case than ever.
The U.K. has assumed hosting duties for the 67th edition as 2022’s winners, Ukraine, remain under Russian attack.
Meanwhile, rising costs have prompted some countries to bow out before the competition has even begun.
So, what is the true cost of the contest - and is it worth it? Watch the video above to find out.

It's part of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union), that's why Israel is in Eurovision. (And why many other nations in northern Africa and the middle east could participate as EBU members, but because Israel participates, they do not).

Here in America, supposedly the land of the free, there is quite a bit of censorship at musical events. They don't like songs like "All Along the Watchtower" by Bob Dylan or "Sign of the Gypsy Queen" by Lorance Hud (famously covered by April Wine) because they're considered antiwar songs. I was physically attacked for my original antiwar songs, "William's 'Lectric Shave" and "Laughing" and suffered serious injury, to wit a broken hip. Don't let anybody tell ;you America has free speech.

Israel is a country made out of European Jews that migrated to their holy land during the last century! Australia is also a European country(mostly), because a huge part of the population are European settlers and also it's apart of the British commonwealth countries!

I mean, let's be honest, if it wasn't for the illegal invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine would not have won the contest last year. The UK would have won.
    Eurovision is highly political.

If it wasn’t for WWII, Eurovision would not have existed... If your Mom had kept the baby she had aborted before you, you wouldn’t have been born. Your logic is infantile and doesn’t make sense.

But that's the essence of Eurovision: it's always a reflection of the Zeitgeist. Britain also got a sympathy boost for its support of Ukraine. Would the UK really have won? We just don't know. In 2018 "Non Mi Avete Fatto Niente" was arguably the superior song, but "Toy" reflected the sentiment of "Me Too", which is also part of the reason why it won. One should also point out that neither Netta nor Kalush Orchestra were sh*tty acts. Point being: Eurovision never takes place in a vacuum.

It is more logical to sell Eurovision rights to an rich gulf Arab state and make it permanent in there. It would make easier people to travel those countries due to relaxed visa regime and they are rich and secure enough for international visitors. It is better than putting burden to European tax payers every year.

@@kooldude123 well let’s move it to Singapore or Israel then. It can be any developed country in any continent with an relaxed visa regime and put all the burden on that country rather than letting European politicians scam its citizens for an event that has no economic benefit. The benefit of events like Olympics,Eurovision or Winter Olympics are only benefiting either management board of those events or shady politicians whom benefit from commissioning the construction projects to d multi billion construction companies.
