  • After years of looking I finally stumbled on to Tekton tools and their master socket sets. I am in no way sponsored by Tekton tools. This is my honest review of my experience using their products.

    I have been using my old USA Craftsman tools for the last 50 years. Now that the new Craftsman is awful, Tekton is my new go-to. Outstanding quality at a very reasonable price. I appreciate their attempt to bring at least part of their manufacturing to the USA. Continued good luck, Tekton.

      Couldn’t agree more with what you said. Tekton is very transparent about where their tools are manufactured and are continuing to increase their USA made selection.

      30 year old craftsman set here. Just had to warranty a few sockets and the new stuff is TERRIBLE. The length of the sockets is inconsistent as is the depth of the size markings. The chrome is already peeling off my 10mm and it’s only been used a couple times. Also as far as I can find they no longer make 1/4 and 3/8 12 point sockets.

    I bought my first tools back in the mid 1970s. All of my friends were using S-K tools but I didn't like them. So I went to Sears and bought a full set of 3/8" drive SAE sockets, a ratchet, a couple of extensions, and a small box with three drawers. I broke several of the sockets, but they were easily replaced under warranty at the store. Most of those tools, however, are still in my tool box today. They are beat to hell after nearly 50 years, but I don't work so much anymore so I am pretty sure I will be passing them on to my son-in-law when the time comes. He borrows them all the time. When I wrenched in dealerships in the late 70s and all through the 80s I eventually added many, many tools from the tool trucks. I thought it was cool to have Snap-On and Mac tools in my box, but honestly an awful lot of them were stolen over time. But the thieves never touched my old faithful Craftsman tools.
    I am planning to add some tools to my box because I have some major projects coming up. I will be doing a couple of engine rebuilds/ replacements, restoring a classic old motorcycle, etc. and EVERYTHING I will be touching is metric, which I am painfully short on. So I am definitely looking at the Tekton brand. I love that they are made in the USA (Michigan, specifically), and their warranty process is simple and painless. I haven't ordered my new tools yet, but soon after the New Year (that's 2021) I will be ready to pull the trigger and order them from their website. I can't wait to get started with them, and neither can my S-I-L cause he knows they will be his some day.

    I appreciate Tekton’s 6-point sockets and no-skip “Master Sets.” Blew out my first impact socket last week - and couldn’t find an equivalent among my older sets.. They’d all skipped the 21mm! With my new sets arriving daily, I’ll be tripled up with Tekton - and all six-points!

    Great review. I've found exactly the same thing you did; started with Craftsman, worked well for a few years to do little repairs on my car. When I started doing bigger things like suspension rebuilds, I needed tools that weren't in the set. Tried to by Craftsman to fill in the gaps, but discovered they didn't make it, so sighed and "resigned" myself to buying a Tekton tool. Was pleasantly surprised at the better quality at a lower price. Whenever I'm looking for a new tool now, I specifically look for Tekton.

    I agree completely. I've got my old craftsman USA set, but now I'm upgrading to something new too. Tekton is at the top of my list! It's just more practical for me as a DIY'er to still buy a high quality tool set (without the tool truck hype) for a good price that will do the jobs I need, and last a long time. It's a no brainer!!

      You speak for me, too. I've been using a Frankenstein's monster of a toolbox for years and years, and I think I'm old enough now to have comprehensive sets that don't make me go rummaging through all my crap to find the tool I need. I'm just a household handyman/garage mechanic type, so I don't need tools that get beat everyday, but even if was, I think I'd still go Tekton, because I hear nothing but good things about them. In my head, they've taken Craftsman's throne.

    I was in the same boat, had an older Craftsman mechanics tool set and didn't have a complete set of sockets, when I started looking for more than a few to fill the gaps I started looking to upgrade my tool sets.........I was going back and forth between Gearwrench and Tekton, finally decided on getting a set of Tekton 1/4 & 3/8 metric sets along with a set of metric wrenches. I'm not a mechanic, strictly DIY and have modern vehicles. I was so thoroughly impressed with Tekton so much that will continue to add Tekton to my tool collection.

    The Tekton 3/8" drive ratchet performed just as well as the Snap-On head-to-head in torque to failure showdown. Craftsman is not in the same league with Tekton, yes, I would truly consider Tekton a "professional" grade tool over Craftsman. I have used all brands over the past 35 years and Tekton is up there. Their warranty is excellent too, yes, I have had to use that too. I took a picture of the socket, emailed it to them, and they had me a new replacement really fast.

  • @Jack-yl7cc
    @Jack-yl7cc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For impact rated sockets, I really like the Grey Pneumatic Dou Sockets. They are intended for both hand use and for impact use(all socket sets come with a ratchet, although I prefer a 120 tooth Gearwrench for 1/4" because the ratchet head is almost half the thickness). I like the GP's Dou Sockets because of the fact they are just as thin walled as any normal chrome set I have ever used and for the most part they don't skip any sizes. Their 1/2" metric set does skip 31mm but it goes up to 36mm and after 5 years of owning them I have yet to need a 31mm socket, so I am fine with that.
    I also recommend checking out VIM tools for their hex bits and specialty tools. Unlike cheaper hex bits, I have not ever had one of their bits deform.
    For both manufactures you need to be careful where you buy their tools from if you want them to honor their warranty. Neither one accepts warranty claims from websites that allow potentially non-authorized third party sellers(Amazon, Newegg, Walmart, etc) to sell what might or might not be their product. This is practically becoming an industry standard for any manufacture that is still willing to offer a Life Time warranty on their products.

    Great video! I am a first time watcher and I just subscribed to the channel. I absolutely love Tekton. I have the quarter inch socket set and the 3/8 inch set. I was getting set to purchase the half inch set when they ran that sale on their wrenches. Maybe I can get the half inch socket set for Christmas. I needed a quarter inch socket set and I went to Lowe's. Something about the new Craftsman tools just didn't seem right. So I went home and did a little research. I wasn't happy with the new Stanley Chinese Craftsman tools. I looked a little further and it came down to Icon or Tekton. The Tekton tool's really impressed me. Tekton has become my new tool brand. Don't forget to tell people about their 10% Tekton cash back rewards. I would love to see more Tekton reviews.

    work bought Tekton for me at work. i have abused them working on boilers and chillers. steam gauled bolts are a solid pain to remove. i have put a 4ft pipe on my 1/2 " breaker bar to remove nuts from 3/4 studs. i broke 3 studs but the tools were great. same using the chrome ones with impact wrenches.
    the only wrench i broke was a small allen 3/8 for a set screw on a fan motor. a quick trip to the website with a photo of the broken wrench and they sent a entire new set in 3 days.
    i will be replacing my tools in the future with Tekton.

    The Craftsman 154pc set has been my travel set for 12 years. The pieces included are perfect, there's room to throw in some extra small pieces, and I can't find something similar these days. I too am avoiding any new Craftsman tools due to quality and availability. Husky have been great so far as well and I like that I can go to Home Depot and get replacement pieces.
    Tekton however has very nice and appealing sets. All 6 point, no wrenches or extra fluff, and no skips. Going this route is definitely more expensive than buying a set in a store, but you really get complete sets.

    If I may sir, you seriously need to invest in a impact. Personally I use Milwaukee but there are many brands. There isn't any reason now days to be bending and breaking tools with a cheater bar. For a couple hundred dollars you can get 500 - 700 ft lbs or more of nut busting torque.

    Nice! I just pulled the trigger on the 1/4" and 3/8" sets you reviewed here. Did you notice how robust the 3/8" breaker bar is? If I'm not wrong, It's probably the same bar as the 1/2" (I don't have the 1/2" set to compare it to). It struck me as comical looking with only a 3/8" square drive, but also really robust and should hold up to abuse. My only "complaint" is with the 3/8" set case. It would have been nice if they could have made a large parts tray, perhaps carve one into the lid side and place a cover over it so that the sockets are still supported (similar to the Craftsman toolcase you show). The reason I want a part's tray is because I could store the sockets that are "missing" from the set that I would add, namely a set of spark plug sockets. Don't worry about that "Tool Truck" stuff, did you see Client Graphics' videos? Tekton's 3/8" ratchet matched the equivalent Snap On (albeit they were both non-QR).

    • @projectkarr
      @projectkarr  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You will definitely be happy with those. Wow ya I just checked and the 1/2” and 3/8” bars are identical in every way other than the end. I definitely agree with the parts tray though. I use the tray on my craftsman for all extras that I purchase and it’s nice to have it all in one place. I did see the client graphics review and was pretty blown away by the test and durability of the ratchets.

  • @jmackinjersey1
    @jmackinjersey1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had a complete master mechanic set of USA Made Craftsman tools and they turned the same amount of fasteners as the guys in the stalls and garages next to me with their high dollar tool sets. I never had any major issues beyond those guys either. The great thing was that if I did break a tool, I could either wait until the end of the day and stop in the local Sears on the way home, or if it was extremely urgent and I didn't have a spare/overlap, then I could run out right then. I never had to wait for the tool truck. Unfortunately that toolbox rolled itself away one day while I was not at home.
    Unfortunately the current lineup of Craftsman tools is not as high in quality. I have heard that Black & Decker/Craftsman is trying to bring back their hand tool manufacturing back to the States, but I haven't seen anything hit the shelves yet. I do know they have some manufacturing of other products in the US, which is a good thing, but I'm not too keen on their toolbox design. They need to step it up again.
    Regardless of that, I am looking at a couple of hand tool companies to replace and add to the tools I have. Fortunately I did receive a relatively small, US Made Craftsman set of tools a few months ago that my father-in-law had in his garage, and he passed away so my mother-in-law gave them to me for doing a lot of work for her. I've narrowed it down to Tekton, Milwaukee and believe it or not, Husky tools.
    The Tekton tool company has a great warranty/replacement policy. The only drawback is that you still have to wait to receive the new tool. Not that a day or four (depending) is a long time, but it can be an issue, depending on your situation. Although I have seen Tekton tools sold on Home Depot .com, so I'm wondering how pricing is effected, if at all.
    Milwaukee hand tools are guaranteed for life. YOUR Life, not the life of the tool. So, if you pass them on to someone else, there may be an issue. Plus, even though they are growing/adding to their current line of hand tools, they are still lacking a few. Plus, you can't simply walk into a Home Depot or one of their repair shops and exchange one socket, you need the entire set/case etc. to exchange.
    Now Husky tools are quite surprising. Yes, they are made in Taiwan, but that is always better than China. I mean, Both of the other brands are also made in Taiwan anyway, so there isn't a lot of compromise in that regard (Yes, I know that Tekton has their % page on their website). The line up is on par with the Tekton in both availability/complete sets as well as initial and overall quality. I haven't had a chance to compare prices though, but I do know that Husky has a couple of larger, complete mechanics tool sets for some reasonable prices.
    If only Craftsman would come back to the US with all of their Manufacturing...

    I’ve used the best of the best chromed tools, under pressure they expanded a little, nothing and eye can see but ends up rounding nuts. Even chrome line wrenches. I’ll use black tempered wrenches even cheap black tempered wrenches out did chrome sockets and wrenches. I had a neighbor fighting for hours trying to take a mechanical fuel pump out with chrome wrenches, he hated to ask me till he was so upset he’s rounding the line nut. Used my black wrenches with a persuader and a huge crack sound he popped it lose in one minute.

    That's what I like about the TEKTON sets when I was in the market to upgrade my sockets and combo wrenches - No Skipped Sizes!
    I may never need all of the odd-ball size sockets, but I like knowing that I don't NOT have them if/when I do.....the 7/32" and 5.5mm for example.

    So far going with Icon from Harbor Freight. And listening to one of the MDT tech what ever you break replace it with something better. Although I haven’t yet broke anything from the Icon line yet but then again the ease of use when swapping out tools by walking in to a store Is better then waiting for a truck to pull up to the shop.

    I put all of the numbers together out of curiosity on what it would cost to piece an mostly equivalent kit bit by bit from tekton and the total came out roughly around $615 bucks. That assuming that they sell the 1/4 spinner screwdriver for 5 bucks but they don't even sell it from what I can find. That means you are saving roughly $220 bucks in this kit. Or if you buy the drive sizes separately you spend $435, making this kit $45 cheaper. May be worth it to buy the kits separately but I figure if you want them then just save up and buy the big combo kit. things I wish they included in these kits are the reducers and adapters and mayby a third extension in each drive size.

    Old school mechanic here, like your review, I do have some Tekton tools myself. Only bad thing about it is that you half to buy 1/2in ,3/8in, & 1/4in separately. Which estimates about a little over $400.00 dollars. and then your sitting on or half to carry around all three boxes to have a complete master set with ya. They don't all come in one one box all together. Honestly for some people out there my best suggestion is to get a Dewalt 204pc mechanic tool set. The price is $212.00. It's got 1/2in, 3/8in, & 1/4in in all in one box, including 3 extension for each 1/2in, 3/8, & 1/4in. And good size extension on that. Also three different size spark plugs, and a nice set of SAE & MM wrench set with allen & E-torx set. And it's all in one box to carry around with ya like a breif case. Way better then carrying all three boxes of Tekton. But hay that's just my opinion, but overall cool review.
