Listened to this song about a thousand times over the space of about 8 years and it blows me away every single time. The song, the drummer, the vocals, the lead guitar, it’s just perfection in one song.
Watching this Jeff Beck Rock n roll party was the first time I'd ever heard of Imelda , what a voice , figure and personality , the girl has EVERYTHING , going to see her LIVE in Belfast on 13th December 2014 , courtesy of my daughter Cathy .
What's the super genius part of Jeff is the way he builds his sections, in the opening he states the theme, then he vamps and brings it up to a mini crescendo with double stops to welcome Imelda on to the stage, later when he does his solo it's all bigger than the intro but he stills builds all the pieces of the solo to a climax. Also throughout the whole song he's always complimenting and doing call and answer with Imelda. JUST BRILLIANT MASTERY !!
I think it could be his jazz influences coming in to play by introducing the main theme and then expanding on it. He's been paired with some great singers over the years, but Imelda and him on this one blows them all out of the water.
This was the first time I had ever heard of Imelda May, watching this Jeff Beck special and I was hooked ever since. She has a unique and awesome voice!
All the right notes, necessarily in the right order and most definitely at the right time with the right feeling, gone but never to be forgotten rest in peace genius.
The drummer is sensational. I love how he throws himself into the music by the moves and facial expressions he makes. Jeff's playing is SO GOOD! He really knows the "ins and outs" of the guitar. I think he MUST be the best player all around! All the brass players are wonderful. And, Imelda May is meant to sing just these types of songs. Great enjoyment as I am in my office! Thanks for posting this CD. SYLVIA! -FL 2/18/2021
Man, it doesn't get much better than this ... a great oldies song, one of the best guitarists in the world, and the amazing vocal talents of Miss Imelda May all at once.
Stevie Ray and Gary Moore. They did. On a level that will never be matched. Listen to Gary play Still got the Blues Live at the Hammersmith. Until I heard that, I’d never heard a guitar truly cry. It’s utterly mind blowing.
Jeff Beck was a Master of the Strat. So was Hendrix. It's silly to compare them, or anyone else. Just watch the performance - watch a Master effortlessly at work - that's all that's needed.
If there was any doubt that Jeff Beck was the King of the 1960's guitar gods, this dispels that notion. I've watched this about a hundred times over the years, still am amazed by beck's initial solo.
daduck100 his phrasing is something out of this world. Note by note..he pours his soul into it, astonishing to think that page and clapton barely can play 20% of their skills nowadays while beck seems to get in another level beyond god tier. Also his taste and incredible choice or repertoire and fellow musicians in the last 2 decades just outshines anything other musicians from his generation has done. Clapton still revered for what he did on yardbirds and mostly Cream. Page forever for his masterpieces on zepp..but... beck can comfortably sit at chair number 2 after jimi hendrix.
Second solo gets me even more than the first. Truly the most unique voice on the electric guitar in my lifetime (65 years). This is my fave ever Jeff solo, Drown In MY Own Tears, from the Later With Jools show - watched it gazillion times and time always stands still. th-cam.com/video/XFlRVNHdeIQ/w-d-xo.html
Jeff Beck is my all time favorite musician. Ever. He always makes me smile. This performance, everyone was ON that night. They took a beautiful, classic song and raised it to another level. I don't know how many times I've watched this. (I have the DVD.) But, it gives me goose bumps every single time.
One of the best things adult people of both sexes can do together is making music. The chemistry between Jeff, Imelda and band is so immense, it’s mindblowing, genious! One of my alltime favorites.
A great night with everyone looking like they are having a great time. Easy for a vocalist to struggle to match up to Beck's wonderful, expressive guitar but she kills it.
I did audio post on this show. Conforming, sweetening, 5.1, and delivery. I remember being in the studio working on this and the whole show is great but this song had me going WTAF! That solo starting at about 3:21 is just ridiculous. What a legend and what a loss. I'm stunned.
Hey Peter - care to offer up any anecdotes about your time working on the show? I assume you didn't meet Beck (or the other musicians), or did you? Anything of note would be much appreciated. :)

I don't there are a whole lot of women who could step on stage after a guitar intro like that from a guy with the creds of Jeff Beck and not be extremely intimidated at the thought of having to match that level of guitar skill vocally. Imelda May has what it takes!

Tough competition with Page, but Beck ruled in The Yardbirds hands down. The thing is that Jimmy Page had his from 68~75 fantastic years, if wasn't for drugs and alcohol he would keep his virtuosity. Jeff Beck on other hand never lost his technical and virtuosity, on contrary he got even better as the years gone by... like wine.Eric Clapton never impressed me.
