2021 Epiphone Dove Studio vs. 2022 Gibson Dove Original: is it worth the money?

  • Our "HummingDove" had a couple of problems when it came to us: no battery in the pickup and strings that were dead enough to be considered walk ons for the Walking Dead. But, after some thorough cleaning and diagnosis, she's ready to be compared to her Gibson cousin.
    *disclaimer* If you're looking for a video to tell you that the Dove Studio is better than the Dove Original, stop now. This isn't that video. But if you want to hear how the two sound next to each other, through the same amp and the same settings, check this video out. The Epiphone is a good guitar at a good price. But it's just not built like the Dove Original and the sound is proof of that.
    Is it worth the extra money for the Gibson? Check out the video and decide for yourself. What would you change on the Dove Studio to help it get to a level that would make it more competitive against it's $4000+ cousin? Let us know what you think in the comments.
    Enjoy!

      I'll give you a quick rundown. It's a survivor car that has been in my family for just over 5 years. We are the third owners and it's got just shy of 110,000 miles on it. Benefit of buying a low mileage North Carolina car: it's in great shape! Downside of buying a low mileage North Carolina car: it doesn't have AC and Texas heat is no joke. But we have the two 98s that have AC, so this one is our Autumn to Spring car and the 98s are the Summer to late Autumn cars.

    The Epiphone, as it is in the music store, is 90-95% the guitar that is the ten fold more expensive Gibson. If you do as I did - spent 150 hours adjusting the powerpoints under the bridge, replacing the saddle, finding the right pitch/tuning and strings for your Epiphone, no one will know the difference, unless they read the headstock label.
    My Epiphone Hummingbird sounds much better than it did, and, at the store, it already sounded better than the other guitars 6-10xs more expensive.
    One thing I found was that the Hummingbird opened up like crazy with open tunings - much more so than most guitars.
    The tuning and pitch my Epiphone Hummingbird sounded best with turned out to be 6Db-5Gb-4Db-3ab-2db-1f.
    An unwound 3rd string also improved the sound, adding to it's already prominent luminescence.
    It sounds like moonbeams bouncing off a late night summer lake.

      I thought the same thing when I saw it on the Sweetwater website. I had to make my sales engineer go down and check the guitar to make sure it wasn't some kind of mixup of products. But there it was, real as can be. I can't say that it's a "1 of 1" guitar because they mass produce these guitars and there's really no way of knowing how many get Hummingbird pickguards by accident. But it's rare, to be sure. And that kind of gives it a cool factor above the normal appearance of the guitar.

    Solid and clear presentation! Today, I finally played a Gibson Dove but it 'rattled'. It looked beautiful but was not what I hoped or dream of. So I bought an Epiphone Dove, which is, as you say, a good 'out and about' guitar. The Epiphone good value for the lower price. The Gibson looked LOVELY but did not sound right?? James Deagle

    My GF came home with a ViolinBurst Dove and it needed pretty extensive setup.. I made a 13mm tall saddle to get it to work proper after setting the neck relief. Yanked the sonicore out immediately and just put a hard UST piezo to the output jack directly. I changed to Flatwounds for a while but it's just not the vibe this time. Earthwood 10-53.
    I don't see the Gibson being worthy.. Ever.

    Hi I have a question I’m moving on from my Yamaha beginner acoustic and I want to get a nice one not crazy expensive but good worth, I thought this would be a good option but it sounds like there are better ones, any suggestions? 500 is my budget.

      Honestly, while I do not talk about them much on this channel, I would recommend a Guild acoustic if you're searching in that range. Everything in that price range is going to be made in the Pacific Rim area, and Guild just makes a quality guitar that outperforms for it's price. The 240 series guitars are all well made and sound good and they are all between $399-599. If you can find one to play at a local music shop, do it. I've had a couple American made Guilds in the past and had no complaints about them.

    What's the name of melody played at 6:30 ?

    • @guitarsandgears3948
      @guitarsandgears3948  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I honestly don't know if it is someone else's melody or not. I was playing around with an acoustic one day, just going through chord progressions and this one came to me. I'm kind of a basic player, so I like chords and progressions that allow me to have minimal finger movement but great depth. And the movement between C and B in the Aminor chord does that. The rest of the chords in that melody are chords played in the first position on the neck. Easy to play and sounds good on video.

    On these acoustics, the quality of the wood is very important, like the manufacture, so the price is not the same...

    • @guitarsandgears3948
      @guitarsandgears3948  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Absolutely correct. And the Gibson Dove is made with almost Custom Shop quality woods versus the Epiphone Dove Studio being made with laminated wood back and sides. So there's a massive difference in build materials and overall build quality. And that is very much apparent in their sound differences.

    Why has your Epiphone Dove got a HummingBird scratch plate.?

    • @guitarsandgears3948
      @guitarsandgears3948  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was a mixup at the factory. These Doves and the Hummingbirds are made at the same factory. I'm pretty sure that this one got a Hummingbird pickguard by accident because all of the pickguards look very similar and are in parts bins near each other. I affectionately call this one a HummingDove because of the pickguard and the fact that there were Hummingbirds made in the 1960s with maple back and sides, which was how the Dove was constructed.

    Is it as nice as my j45 studio, or taylor's? no. But for the price you really can't beat it. After cleaning up the fretboard, new strings and a small setup it rips!

      The Gibson Dove stickers for $4499. The Epiphone Dove Studio stickers for $449. The law of diminishing returns is never more apparent than in the $4000 difference between these two guitars. The Epiphone absolutely is the guitar to get if you're looking for something you can take to the beach, campsite or anywhere that the guitar might get damaged. The Gibson is what you get when you're needing something to record on or have at your house to play and display.

    It’s the thicker woods, bracing and heavy polyurethane finish that kill the epiphone.

    A $4000 guitar vs a $400ish , they are what they are ! I have wanted a Dove for awhile now and I wondered what both of these would sound like next to each other , Epi sounded like an Epi , and the Gibson like a Gibson. Even the Masterbilts sounds like an Epiphone as they are not Gibson`s , they maybe close they are not the same. Both are great guitars for two different budgets but if you want the sound then you know what you have to do.

    • @guitarsandgears3948
      @guitarsandgears3948  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I wasn't thinking there was any chance the Epiphone was ever going to sound as good as the Gibson, especially with the QC issues that we found with the Dove Studio during the unboxing video. That's also why I didn't bother bringing out the 1963 Dove for this one.
      The Dove Studio is a good guitar to have in the living room to play around with. Also makes a good campfire/backyard guitar.

      Numbers matching North Carolina car. The good side of that is that it's all original. The bad side of that is that it doesn't have air conditioning. So this one gets a lot of use during the fall/winter and the 1970 Olds 98 4dr gets more use during the spring/summer. But the 442 is a great driver. Not as fast as my Z28 or TRX, but the perfect car for cool weather cruising.

    Is it the closest in its price group to a $4000 Gibson is the only question that matters. To make it appear a failure by expecting $4000 fit, finish, matériels, and sound for 10-12% of the cost is ridiculous.

    • @guitarsandgears3948
      @guitarsandgears3948  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is the closest thing with a Dove on it. Are there other guitars that have similar woods in the Gibson lineup? Yes, there are. But none of them are Doves. Are there other guitars in the Epiphone lineup that would be a more fair comparison? Yes, but none of them are Doves. So I very much think this is a legit comparison of two guitars that have the same name. I also feel like they should have given this guitar solid wood back and sides and charged a few dollars more. Because it's all about what you put it out there as. If it's a Dove, make it like a Dove. If it's a Hummingbird, make it like a Hummingbird.
      Also, I don't think it's a *failure* as much as I do think it's a missed opportunity to deliver a solid Epiphone counterpart to the Gibson Dove. I think the Epiphone makes a great guitar to just have around and play without worrying that it cost you thousands of dollars. But it's never gonna be mistake for a Gibson Dove. And that's something that some of the other Inspired by Gibson models (like the IBG J45 and Hummingbird) could pull off.

      @guitarsandgears3948  ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, it's a Dove with a Hummingbird pickguard. Best we can tell, it's an uncommon occurrence where they mixed up the pick guards at the factory. The Hummingbird would be an all solid wood guitar, and this one has the laminate back and sides. The truss rod cover says "Dove," so that's the only REAL way you can tell this one is a Dove, other than taking the end pin out to see the layers of wood on the bout.

      If you're not going to use it for recording or playing live somewhere, the Epiphone Dove will give you all the enjoyment of playing a Dove without the cost. I love Gibson Doves because they have a sound and feel to them that is unique in the Gibson acoustic lineup. Could be the woods, could be the slightly longer scale, could be the fact that they make less of them and pay closer attention to them, accordingly. Could be a combination of all of those things. Whatever it is, they are unique and they are my favorites. Even in Epiphone form.
