    If that is the extent of it I don't think you lost much without the prebuy. Airplanes are vibration machines that happen to be able to fly. Parts break and wear out. You should expect and anticipate that and maintain constant vigilance. Don't view it as poor me I bought a bad airplane. More parts are soon to fail so maintain a good attitude and you will enjoy that pretty bird a lot more.

    As the old saying goes, “When you buy quality you only cry once”, regardless you’re still crying one way or the other. Chalk it up to experience and you have a plane that you love and you’re making it your own! She’s going to give you great trips and good stories and you will be prepared for your next purchase because I don’t know any pilot that only bought one plane. Enjoy and easy on those brakes. 😊

    Anything you have in life is gonna cost you money, be it planes, boats or cars. As long as you make sure they don’t cost you anything else you might just go out of this world old and enriched. I heard someone say that life is not a race to the end, life is the journey. When I was younger I always heard life was wine, women and song. I’m at the age a woman doesn’t affect me, I can’t carry a tune in a bucket but still like my whiskey and damn I have some great memories. I think you did great, maybe you might have done it better. But if you look at it don’t you think you would have probably had the same cost if you had done a prebuy, or got another plane in the long run possibly. Great up front video.

    First off welcome to the 180 club! If you’re not already, would love to have you in the International 180/185 club. I joined over 12 years ago , the wealth of information these old guys have is priceless! But for me the friendship and places it has taken me as far as club fly-in’s are places I would have never experienced had I not been a part of the club. Like many old birds , it’s a multi year process to get them to where they are the way you want it. Took me 10 years, but not another bird I would rather have!

    I have owned quite a few airplanes over the years, and the first year of ownership has always been expensive, getting it into the condition you want it in. That is just for airworthiness issues, avionics upgrades, etcetera come later. That has held true for every plane I have owned, whether a 152, T210, Bonanza, T-6, Baron or 310. You always find little hidden surprises, but it's worth it!

    Thanks for the frank discussion on getting your skywagon running. I'm in a similar process w 1958 182 that I bought last October also. We had an annual and an over the shoulder type of "prebuy " at the time but it's been a monthly occurance to fix something on it. I hope I'm seeing the way through the end of the forest by now. I now have abt 85 hrs on the plane.

      SW Thanks for watching! I don't think we are the only two..... I am talking about this to shed a little different perspective on the subject... • @TheFretman2
    @TheFretman2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I understand...I got impatient and did the prebuy myself too. I opened up all the inspection ports and didn't see anything alarming. But I did have to put money into the airplane once I got it home as some things failed...recently a new right gas tank. I've had the plane less than a year now. I also put a new AI in it, new tires, tubes and brake pads, new strut fairings, a new spinner, a new clock, new cigarette lighter receptacle. Not quite what you had to do though. Glad you're getting yours in shape!

    Sometimes you gotta accept the risk and roll with it. Your issues are pretty minor normal stuff. Good job on the video explaining what people can expect that may not be familiar. You now own one of the greatest single engine airplanes ever made and they are tough to buy, but worth it.

    Thanks for the video! Nice 180, I've been looking at buying a tailwheel, I think my budget is more in the Cessna 140 range haha. But what I'm hearing from this video, is that airplane ownership is a lot like owning a Jeep.

  • @N8844H
    @N8844H 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You didn't mention how many hours are on the engine. That would be a key piece of information. And swapping out components without figuring out what was going on with systems is an expensive way to fix problems (the attitude and directional gyros might have been just fine) but vacuum pumps are always needing attention. They often fail at the worst possible moment...I had a pressure pump (the "vacuum pump" on a Beech) die in IMC on a low approach. Going electronic here is probably a good idea. Either way, a glance at the suction gauge could have helped you and saved time and dollars. And from where I sit, after the cost of buying a strut and having it paint matched and installed, you were probably better off buying new.
    When something goes south (like an intermittent transponder), stop, take a breath, and go to the basics. Is the connection secure? Is the box secure? Is the connection to the antenna corroded? Can you make it fail by jiggling the case? If none of the above, then pull the box and have it bench checked.
    Tossing new components at problems will eventually solve them, but it will be unnecessarily costly.
    Nice airplane, though, and watch what you do with those brakes. Be smooth. You don't want to have to go hunting for another prop.

    First, it's a wonderful looking 180. Second, it's great to hear an honest assessment of aircraft ownership. A good rule of thumb with any luxury item is how will you react to a $5,000 repair bill. They happen. My first annual was about $5,000 and all the old parts fit in a Ziplock sandwich bag! Stuff needs attention and labor is a big part of it. Good luck and good flying!

If I have to buy a used airplane, I would rather buy a newer but used Vans experimental because the problems of corrosion and age are mostly non event. Far fewer things to go wrong, and the ones that do go wrong are a lot less expensive to fix than on a larger, more complex plane. Then when you have figured out how to fly, move it down the road and buy whatever plane suits your long term goals.

    FYI: pre buys are NO garentee, it's not the same as an annual inspection. The best you can hope for is to get your money back on the prebuy if you have an experience like this. Even an annual does not catch everything. The faa teaches the a and p you are inspecting the plane for that day. Things break, that's just life. You probably would have had the same proplems either with a pre buy or not. A mechanic can't find everything wrong on the plane.

    $800 Prebuys are overrated. They won't go boroscope your intended plane. Just more obvious external issues are catch. In the end, you'll need luck. Those planes where made with 15 years/5000k hours of useful life in mind, not 30 much less, 60! Anything above 30 is pushing ... it belongs to museums, as an engineering point of perception. When big things like wing spar AD florish, the fleet is already beyond project, needing hugely aberration expensive bandaids, IMO.

    I like how you ended the video. Gives me some hope. I’m in the late stages of buying an airplane who’s prebuy inspection was done by the current aircraft mechanic shop. Because I’m buying it in a remote area I could not get an independent prebuy. So, who knows what I’m getting myself into, thankfully it’s a Cherokee 180 and not included in the recent Spar AD. Oh I plan to go out and check out the logbooks myself like you did and also scan it to a shop back home for their assessment. They just did an oil change or during the pre-buy and said there’s no contaminants, But I am thinking about having them repeat that oil change after I test fly just so that I know and verify myself visually that it has been done. Does that sound unreasonable?

    You paid a premium for scrap. Did you check ADs before making an offer? This story is one disaster after another, and I would have to question the authenticity of the logs.

    I once had the money to buy an airplane, but I spent some of it on women, some of it on booze and entertainment, and I just wasted the rest.

    if I buy a plane, I am gonna make the seller test fly the plane personally. I will actually pay for the expense for us to go Cross-Country! And if he hesitates, I will consider that a REd Flag!

      @@villagewealthmanagement through your personal suffering during this lengthy and costly process, we have gained invaluable wisdom and learned of how sophisticated and complex such an acquisition might be! But, I guess life was never cut and dry to start with! Your story is proof of that! Thanks for sharing such wisdom of this elusive industry with us!

    Buy an airplane? hahaha! The biggest mistake you'll ever make in your life. Good luck. No intention of being rude, but airplane ownership is ideal for those where money is abundant and plentiful. Just when you think you are in the clear, you get hit in the gut again. And again.

    Welcome to airplane ownership ! You better get ready for all those things that come up, because they will 😀
