  • We all make mistakes. To err is to be human. No one is born perfect and you certainly can't expect to pick up a new hobby, like writing with fountain pens, and expect to do it perfectly from the start.
    However, some mistakes are unforgivable, especially if you are warned about them beforehand. In this video, I'll show you 11 costly mistakes that can ruin your enjoyment of fountain pens. Feel free to comment below with your own mistakes so that others may avoid such grisly fates.
    (0:00) Intro
    (0:37) Using the wrong ink
    (1:10) Using the wrong paper

    Moving with your fountain pen whether in your pocket or in your bag or even safely tucked in his pouch/ case.. always position the pen nib-up . To avoid a splatter here or there.🥲

    Yes, I've learned the lesson of having too many pens inked at one time. Er, maybe I should say I'm working on that one. Some of them are beautiful and a joy to look at. Turning the pen around and having the light catch the pen at various angles. You don't need the pen to roll of the table uncapped to be a problem, if you drop a capped pen you can wind up with ink all over the inside of the cap and grip section. 🙃😕🤪

    I agree so much about the paper. But even among FP friendly paper there's a vast amount of difference at how inks look and perform. Also, I would recommend Waterman's "Serenity Blue" over Noodler's Xfeather. It's much better at resisting feathering than that Xfeather. For instance, Serenity Blue performs excellently in Moleskine notebooks.

    • @pat412pear
      @pat412pear 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree with the Serenity Blue or surprisingly Diamine Oxford Blue will do well on bad paper. Just today I picked up composition books at a dollar store. My usual routine is to use the back page to test quality of the paper if they pass ‘the Serenity test’, I keep them- if not I donate them to schools. I have found most paper made in Vietnam are great cheap fountain pen friendly paper. Even MEAD brand paper made there is great.

      Great suggestion on the Waterman Serenity Blue! Waterman has such an underrated ink selection.

    • @She-wolf3636
      @She-wolf3636 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That interesting, because I'm always had the worst luck with with Waterman inks on cheaper paper and in my pens in general. X-Feather is my school/cheap paper ink. I used X-Feather on Tomoe River paper and it took FOREVER to dry. Cheap paper only for me.

    The zoom in and red filter omg man. I'm so glad I wasn't sipping my coffee when that happened.
    I did the calligraphy ink thing really early on, but they were Staedtler international shorts so I figured this stuff was just being marketed to go with their calligraphy-branded pens. Still clogged the heck out of whatever pen I tried it in (can't remember) so I was wrong... Thankfully after a lot of flushing it was cleared and working again.

    Have a Sheaffer 300, which I've dropped on the nib a couple of times, washed out rarely, switched/mixed inks without washing, and pulled the cap off straight for a couple of years before I realised you're supposed to twist it just a little bit. Somehow dented the steel barrel.
    It keeps on trucking, it's a tough pen. I like it.

  • @bobberry5452
    @bobberry5452 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you decide to experiment with and learn how to grind your nibs, do it gently and slowly! I just turned a new Procyon extra fine nib into a stub. It actually writes quite well now, but I started out thinking I would simply soften the corners a little and ended up taking waaaaay too much off!

    I bought a Noodler's Ahab from Marketfair Stationery-Goldspot Pens on Amazon-and I pulled the nib and feed off to attempt to make my line variation more concise. And well, the feed got wedged into the pen. I put the feed incorrectly. Not too mention I lost the little tube for the piston. Which is why I prefer the Konrad over the Ahab.

    Hi there friend! I've only made one error, left the cap off and the ink nearly dried out! Opps! Also some good _cheap_ pens such as the Lamy Safari doesn't really roll due to its design _(Made in Germany)_ that is if the barrel is not 100% round, it should not roll! Another good tip _(for rolling pens)_ if the cap has a clip, post the caps, thus prevents rolling!

    I actually put India ink in a fountainpen, on purpose. I had bought a weird thing, the non refillable V-pen, it has a fountainpen nib and feed. Just to try out the fountainpen experience (turned out I love them, and have 'real' fountainpens now). After the v-pen was empty, I found out you can refill it by eye dripper method, when you pull out the feed with pliers.
    The feed has a reputation to be robust enough to tolerate India ink, and I decided to try the experiment, it actually works, use it for drawing ( line and wash needs waterfast ink).
    But I don't expect it to last very long.
    I am interested in waterfast black fountainpen inks, would like to try the platinum some time.

    I made two mistakes. One, I left a pen sitting around unused for a long period of time and it had ink in it. The pen dried out. When I discovered this, in an attempt to clean it, I took it apart and had it soaking in alcohol. would never do that today.

    When using cartridges, giving the cartridge too hard a squeeze so the cartridge splits and ink leaks everywhere. Also when filling a pen with a cartridge I tend to put the pen upright with the nib down and leave it for a few minutes for gravity to do its job! Forgetting and coming back to the pen hours later and realising I now have a cap full of ink and an empty cartridge! Oops!

    • @ctsealteam6
      @ctsealteam6 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think your pen have a problem if all the ink leaks from the cartridge to the cap by just placing them nib down for a few hours.

    I posted the cap on a Narwhal fountain pen after I had opened the back seal (vacuum filler) a bit to get better ink flow. Apparently this is a no-no, but I've never seen anyone talk about it. The cap got stuck and I had to force it off, permanently damaging the pen.(The back cap/vacuum sealer won't close.) I've been afraid to use vacuum fill pens ever sense. Is this a common rule, or just a bad pen?

  • @cferracini
    @cferracini 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Please stop saying the more you know at the end of every tip. It's very annoying because you are repeating the phrase about 10 times in less than 6 minutes. If it was one per minute it would still be annoying but some of those have less 30 seconds between them. Nothing wrong with "the more you know" nor the effect. It's about balance and overusing is the issue.
    Overall nice tips.
