Perfect place to store the kids.
Most underrated comment…
Add a contact switch so "no one" forgets to turn off the light! Good job DAD.😀
I would suggest putting a quick release pin in the actuator in case you lose power and need to get out
I was about to recommend a manual button override for the inside so you cant lock someone in but this is even better
Dave and maybe an emergency light that comes on if you lose power... I know it sounds like a lot, but if your child is in there and the door is down and you lose power, it’s dark and they are locked in and you can’t even open the door from above.
There’s a handle to lift it open
I guess this means it's not a secret anymore! :)
I think the wood grain should run the same way. It would look so much better.
I was looking for some guidance for a drop down hidden disco ball in the ceiling. This is very helpful. Thank you!!
You might want to put some ventilation in, just in case your kids ever NEED to use the space for security reasons.
Thanks for sharing I just finished mine !!!
Hey thanks man. I use your video and created a trapdoor for basement steps. I used 2 30 inch actuators and it works perfectly . I use 4 of the hinges because I made it open up the long way. I'm about ready to put hardwood floor on top so nobody knows it's there . I'm going to stagger it. Thanks again
Show us some pics? I’m doing exactly that
In my experience, kids lose keys. Do you have an extra key remote?
More houses should have hidden spots like this. Makes a perfect panic room in case of emergency
You don’t need a panic room when you have guns 🤣
Guns are why you need panic rooms...
Watched plenty videos looking for the right hinges. Thanks!
Love it!!! Just a thought, add a micro switch to operate the light.
Just in the process of doing one myself. Thanks for the information on the hinges. Awesome 😎
SSL Family Panic Room. Awesome.
I am working on a Chicken Cupola automatic window project. Your use of this linear actuator might just do the trick for my project.
Awesome, I need this to store hardware in a 2x4 wooden shelf space in the garage.
Thanks
Good idea for safe storage or even just hiding.
Too small for my taste! I'd panic being in there, ha ha. Love your channel :-)
I'm a bit claustrophobic, too. I'd panic in there, also. :)
Thank you for sharing the video. Is there a limit switch if not how did you get it stop when it's fully closed?
That is the one flaw, I set it up so that the range of the piston ends close to when it is closed but if you hold the button down it pulls it closed hard and could break the mounts. You just have to know to stop it when it is closed
Silly but fun idea for the girls. Well done dad.
Thank you for your contribution it increases the confident of diy's
This was what comes of falling down a rabbit's hole of research! I'm writing a cozy mystery and desperately needed a trap door in a black box theater ceiling that was operated by remote. Been banging my head against it for weeks trying to figure out how to do it. Then just for the hell of it, I googled 'remote control trap door'. Don't ask me why I didn't do it before. This was TOTALLY what I needed! You are my Hero!
At 2:55 when I was younger I'd of been just a little too tempted to stand for atleast a few minutes.
Heck yeah even more so as a grandpa lol
good for guns or money
Family, So Glad Bedroom is about Done... Could be wrong here but from our Look ,looks like its just like the Mattress & No Box Spring.. If this is the Case Think you / Daughter might like it better. Will make it Bigger/Taller Just think would look better to the Touch.. But Another Video we are Waiting For lol Family Always Thank You So Very Much..
I need a hinge like that that allows for 3/4 finished floor on top of the subfloor.
love this but how would I create the reverse....a trapdoor(s) that swing downwards?
Just found this video, I like the army shirt! hooah.
That’s cool. Do you have a plan in case the power supply, actuator, or switching relay fail with the door in the down position?
It has enough play to lift and and get an arm in to pull the pin
pretty cool.... very creative!
Nice design, but the problem is the linear Actuator, guaranteed it's a cheap one, I only use and recommend Progressive Automation.
It is a cheaper one but seems to work just fine for this project
Nice job, I like it....
Need to add a switch on the door for the light. That way it's never an issue
Gracias 😊
when the trap door is closed are you able to safely walk across it?
Excellent video, thank you so much👍
Would you put a motion activated light in the room so the light will not get left on?
Why do you need any hinges and remote if the wood piece is flush? Wouldn't the grab rings be all that's needed?
Because:. FUN
Awesome dad! You're the greatest!
excellent job but.... how would you open it or close it in case the power goes out?
I'm trying to make this for my stray cats outside so I can open it when they come to eat and close it when the racoons come to steal their food😂
Maybe control it with a raspberry pi ☺️
This is exactly what I’ve been looking to do for my crawl space. Would it be possible to get the item numbers for the hinges and lifting arm?
In the description
Thanks for this. I don’t see the parts list. How do I get it?
Ah, got it1
In the description
Way cool!
So cool
Amazing !
Could I please get a link to where you got hinges?
All in description
You might have to shim both top and bottom of the actuator
Nice work and video. How does the actuator/piston know when to stop closing and/or opening?
Great Video-I want to be able to open and close with a remote control, a cabinet flip up door that houses my split system AC/heater. What model actuator did you order from Amazon. The cabinet door probably weighs no more than 10-15 lbs. I'm limited on space between the split system and the side wall of the cabinet. Am I able to install the actuator on the side wall and how thick is the actuator? What other parts do I need besides the linear actuator? I take it that a 12v battery won't work with a remote control.
awesome dudw
inspiring
That was amazing idea what you had dun there to the floor it was great to see it 👍👍
I think you should’ve just put the motor arm then that metal handle , to me is not necessary !
Nice
Just watched the whole series but can’t find the final reveal. Any links?
What is the items number for those flush hinges you used
You should make a desk with a hidden compartment for books like in the tv show Arrow
How does the actuator react if something restricts the door from closing to the piston’s set distance of retraction? Will it crush my kid’s hand if it closes on it?
It isn’t strong enough to crush anything but there are no safety mechanisms with this setup so it would just struggle until you stop pressing the button
A door switch would avoid to leave the light on after closing the door.
Can you manually open and close still? No power scenario. Building out a 92" x 37" trap door to attic. Currently rigged with gas struts, want to change to this linear actuator after seeing this.
Also, big thank you, the hinges alone are super helpful find.
Now the monsters can access under the bed!
I would have simply drilled a 1 inch thumb size hole and used portable human hydraulic power, it's faster, simpler and more efficient.
well yeah but that is no fun:)
Where did you get the flush mount trap door hinges, if I may ask?
Thank you for the video. I do have question, when I try to open the trap door the piston pushed and when I close the piston retracted the trap so much and the screws coming a part of the framing. Any Idea what, to do to make a work perfect. Thank you , Philippe
I had that issue a little, it would pull too tight and pull on the screws. The trick is to put the piston all the way in and scree it in while the door is closed (you have to be on the inside) then it can’t pull any further than shut
Would something like this work for a larger trap door? Something like 3'5"x 7'2. This will be more of cellar door type thing. Two interface doors…so the framing would be part of the door.
Not sure it would have the power, maybe 2 of them would work though
@@SSLFamilyDad Yes was figuring would need two. U said it's were rated for heavier than ud need. Do u remember what that would be? And maybe manufacturer/kind it was?
Better to use gas struts to do the heavy lifting, let the actuator just get the lifting started. Gravity helps to close things.
funny timing on these things…since I posted this manufacturer Itallan name, Frigelli? Anyway, they have a way to use actuators that actually tuck into the wall cavity so not visible. @@stevebabiak6997
Can I use this the other way for a loft door?
Yes I don’t see why not.
I have the feeling that you wished for something like it when you were young????
where did you get the hinges?
My question is, why you installed a handle if you were going to install a remote door opener
💕 it
now you need a stairwell down lol
Can you please share the door opener link. Thanks
Trap door flush loop handle - amzn.to/3eBI2za
Flush mount hinges - amzn.to/2CCPvjf
Power supply - amzn.to/3hZhYji
Linear Actuator Motor (piston) - amzn.to/3fSUCtP
Remote controller unit - amzn.to/3ev8tq3
Flush trim router bit - amzn.to/2Z3NjZz
Thank you I just added a trap door when someone steps on it I currently have 5 people in my basement
Hey so I have a question....the remote control unit link you posted is that the same one you have like the same remote because in the Amazon link it a totally different remote than what you have ?
It is the same link I used but it looks like they have updated the controller. Still the correct product though, just an updated version
Other than sheer boredom, what possessed you to make this? Not saying that it's not cool, because it is, but I'm just curious, what exactly was the point of it?
Would I be able to
Use the opener for a chicken coop?
Yes, I was thinking about making an auto door with something like this. If course you would need some other controls to make it open and close automatically
Lol you definitely should spend the money and gets better motor
why not a cheap dollar store motion light
Plywood does not expand or contract like a solid wood panel would do. FYI
Nope !!! This project is not quite done yet ...As you just demonstrated the human factor failed , but an easy fix for about $ 2.00 ... & maybe $ 3.00 .... The incandescent bulb needs to be a scrapped because of the dangerous heat /fire possibility of forgotten & left on . ALSO , remove the manual light switch & swap it out for a compression - off when door is closed & on when door is opened . NOW your project is done ...🤗🤗🤗👍👍👍I did enjoy your video , thanks ...
Good feedback but a couple corrections. First, it is an LED light. A motion switch would probably be best in that case and easiest to setup.
🥳💕💕
So as long as 48,000 people don't tell anybody your secret is safe 🤣
Hey could I get your contact info so I can ask you for some help with a similar project?
Hinge name please
Not big enough
