  • In this video I teach you about some of my favorite ways to mark on different types of fabric. Over the years I have collected many different marking tools because no one thing works on every type of fabric. I discuss the ones I use most often and on which material they work best. I will also talk about some of the things you don't want to use like ball point pens and sharpies because they can stain your fabric and ruin your project.

    I've taken sharpie off vinyl with a magic eraser. Might work with other materials.

    Tailor's chalk (triangles) are easily sharpened to a miter edge by running them through a pair if scissors with blades opened partially! Quick and easy!

    I also use a Dritz chalk wheel. I use contractor chalk in it. I like blue and red. I do not use a sharpie on foam. I found out it can bleed through, so I use crayola fine tip washable markers.

    I've had great luck with Crayola Ultra-Clean Washable Markers on leather. (DO NOT confuse with dry erase markers). I can mark on the top of the leather and wipe off with a wet cloth. I do a test on every leather project. Never tried on vinyl.
    Customer brought me leather with grease pencil marks on them. Will not wash off, leaves a black shadow. He cleaned off with brake fluid. I used WD-40. Keeping far away from grease pencils!

    • @Theluckyneedle
      @Theluckyneedle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crayola washable? That's a new one for me! Thanks for the suggestion.
      For the grease pencils are you talking about those ones that you peal the paper off as you use up the pencil? I hate those! Never seen those work.

    Hi, thank you for your videos. I have a huge question: I need to mark/sew diamonds on a FLEXA Carbon Pearl White Vinyl, what would you recommend? I tried Tailors chalk and it doesn't wipe off easy. Thanks again - I look forward to your reply.

    This is kind of off topic from this video but I am sewing leather wallets now with tex210 thread on top and bottom bobbin. My question is on the initial stitch i'm trying to make it look clean on the back under stitch when i backstitch. It looks slightly messy and bunched/ knotted up when I do the backstitch only on the underside of the piece. Is there a tip you can give to where the first couple stitches look good on the underside of the stitch other than the knotted bunched up look? Thanks in advance

    • @Theluckyneedle
      @Theluckyneedle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well. I don't do any leather work like that. You could try not doing a lock stitch and pull the thread through to one side after your finished and tie it off by hand.

    • @Kwoeenie
      @Kwoeenie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I get this when I'm using faux leather sometimes. The only way I've learned to counter that is instead of doing a backstitch, sew a bit, leave needle down, turn your work and sew along the way you just stitched. This allows you to see where you're stitching so you can sew in exactly the same holes and doesn't bundle the underside either. Then you can pivot your work again and continue stitching your project. It's a little slower than backstitching but if you want to keep it near, It's worth it. Hope this helps

    I'm having a hard time finding something that works on coated fabrics such as silnylon. Do you have any recommendations for such fabrics?

    • @Theluckyneedle
      @Theluckyneedle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you tried the white upholstery pencils I use in this video?

    • @Grolnn
      @Grolnn 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have. Didn't work particularly well. The only thing that did work (on the uncoated side) was some sort of magic marker, erasable with water. But it's far from ideal. I might not have bought the best upholstery pencils though, so I'll buy a different brand to try out.

    • @Theluckyneedle
      @Theluckyneedle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Strange. Those usually work well on everything.
      Sometimes what Ill do when I cant find a solution for a certain fabric is I will go to an art supply store with a scrap piece or fabric and just start trying to see if I can find something that will mark well on the fabric. Hopefully this will work for you.

      Out of desperation, I have used a sliver of Dove Soap. I've had this sliver for a lot of months. I'm about to order some chalk, but now I'm thinking I might order colored chalk, but why not stick with the white soap. I wouldn't want to leave it on the fabric for long term because there could be a chemical in the soap that could cause a problem on some fabrics.

      I have that video filmed. In the process of being edited now. Its going to be part of the Advance Top Stitches Course. www.theluckyneedle.com/products/advanced-top-stitches-inserts/
      You need to use a size 24 needle. back off the top thread tension, max out your stitch length, use size 92 thread in the bobbin and 270 on the top where its visible.

      270 is a pain to sew. Make sure you have a 24 needle, undo top tension a bunch and it should go good.
