EDIT: Yes thirty years later, on the worst Trek show of the franchise which barely even qualifies as canon anymore, they finally decided to do something with this massive plot hole. It's a shame Discovery has such shitty writing, because this concept could have been interesting -- had it been explored in TNG and subsequent series, where it would have made sense to continue talking about it in some way. Frankly they'd have been better off just continuing to leave it alone rather than yet another stupid retcon because the writers are too creatively bankrupt to come up with original ideas anymore.
This kind of thing happened all the time in Star Trek, and it's my biggest criticism of the series as a whole. I think it had to do with the episodic nature of the series.
Wouldn't it be terrible if they went to all this effort then got one line of code wrong? Imagine if that episode just ended with everyone looking out at a blue screen of death projected from a tricorder! :-D

We always struggled to see eye to eye on just about anything but watching Star Trek together , that was something we were always able to share and enjoy in peace. Miss you pop, still watching.
I remember watching the original Star Trek with my dad when I was a small boy. I haven't thought about those times in many years those were happy times.
I haven't spoken to my dad in a few years. I still don't understand what exactly happened. He was my hero as a kid, but once I hit puberty he didn't want anything to do with me anymore emotionally abandoning me during the years when I needed him the most, and he abandoned me completely as an adult. Watching TNG with him when I was young is one of many fond memories I have with him that make me miss him. I wish we could watch it together again someday. I hope he isn't just too afraid to face the fact he failed me as a father in so many ways. I hope it's not just pride or shame. I don't really care about any of that now. I forgive him. He did what he knew how, and he wasn't perfect just like everyone else. I just want my dad to be there for me so I can be there for him, same as I always have my whole life.

I always liked the romulans. They're made to be villains, but there's so many moments in TNG where they are really likable and act with honor like here.

I love how the Romulan of all people is the one who truly gets it. They may not be logical like the Vulkans any more, but that doesn't make them evil. They are the victims of the human condition like everyone else and even they can have hope. Loved this episode.

Try the orville. Even though there's more of a comedic factor, it really does feel like star trek, and it makes important statements in the same way star trek does.

It's a touching scene honestly. A race of advanced beings set out into the galaxy and found no other forms like themselves. That must have been severely depressing to them, such a vast universe with no life. So they took upon themselves to seed life everywhere they could. It's touching. Damn good writing.

Now this a good writing lesson: how to turn a story's weakness (the prevalence of rubber foreheaded aliens) into not only a strength of the plot but a downright monumental part of the story's universe. Federation goes "what an incredible discovery that brings us all together." Everyone else goes "ugh!" and "what a waste of time".

deinekes9 yeah very true. And it actually makes perfect sense -- it is plausible that such a thing could have happened, with a hyperintelligent race seeding the universe with genetic codes similar to their own. The inclusion of this plot was brilliant in so many ways.
I love the awkwardness between Picard and the Romulan commander at the end. It really emphasizes how distant the races have been over time after a gruesome war so long ago
I always felt they underplayed Picard there. He is so diplomatic and smart. I feel he would have said more and given a better bridge to the Romulan commander. Then again maybe he knew a short and simple answer would be far more respected by his kind.
I love the look on Picard's face when he says "one day." It's cautious, hard, and full of hope. It will be a long time and a lot of blood shed before that day comes, and he knows it, but is determined that they will get there eventually.
A compassionate Romulan!! At least HE understood the depth of the message. There's hope for them yet if there are more like him. And future episodes and movies proves that there are.
90% of the time Romulans are perfectly reasonable within their point of view, position and cultural behavior. And no, I am not joking. A lot of tense situations between the federation and the romulans thorough the duration of the show made ALL the sense given the context

Yes, I agree. Roddenbury would like this scene. It embodied a lot of the themes of the original show; progress, the possibility of progress, people from different origins working together to improve the world and the importance of scientific truth.

And who's to say that these ancients couldn't travel to another galaxy? P.S. We don't know AT ALL that Odo is the most traveled Changeling, you're making unfounded assumptions based on very little. The female Changeling said many young ones were sent out, and not all returned. There's absolutely no way of knowing where they all ended up. As we saw with Odo and Voyager, beings can end up just about anywhere with natural phenomena- and that doesn't include unnatural, like Q or the Borg transwarp conduits. Then there's even the different TIME possibilities. To assume Odo is the most far traveled, just because we know him as the most far traveled KNOWN, and it's impossible for any others to have gone farther, is just arrogant. One could have ended up so far away that, like Voyager, it would take decades or centuries to return and then THEY would be the most far traveled Changeling known. Key here is KNOWN. Our knowledge is only current as of the now, and a discovery tomorrow can change everything. Further, you can prove or disprove the known, but not the unknown.

I love the twirly moustached villain way in which they appear at the end in this episode. Just fantastic writing, new Trek could learn a hell of a lot from old Trek but I guess they just Wiki the "important stuff".
I've battled wits with a few people who reminded me of Romulans, usually over a chessboard in a park or train stop, but they were always likeable even when you wanted to wring their necks

I _love_ the First Humanoids. I love them even more because in the decades since this episode came out the writers of Trek have had the decency to not ruin them by having any First Humanoid weapons show up or for an army of them to reappear and want to conquer the universe or anything like that. All they wanted was to be remembered, and that’s been honored. The First Humanoids did pop up in _Star Trek Online._ A living archive of them, hundreds of them in stasis. You know what happens when they wake up? They’re immensely grateful and express a desire to go out and see what the other races have built. They’re given huge overtones of proud parents, happy that their kids have grown up well and are doing fine for themselves. No judgment or condescension. I really hope no writer ever decides to do something dark with them.

We actually sent Human Beings to the surface of the moon,... and we brush that off like it was just some small thing that barely even deserves mention in school.
This is the one, single concept that makes me wish we could explore the galaxy and meet other beings that are both like us and unlike us. I know I'll never see it in my lifetime, but it gives me a sense of wonder all the same.
I love the klingon response. He expected to die in honorable combat, and the baldie's speech of unity crushed his hopes and dreams. The kardassian was probably looking to bring brothers and sisters new wealth, and ended up with a message saying everyone is related. Of course humans and romulans value knowledge more than their personal goals, so they were somewhat delighted.

There are many Star Trek shows made without CBS involvement. Many of the fan film things suck, of course, but some are good and a few are quite excellent. Star Trek: Continues, Axanar, and Orville come to mind.
But they aren't. They've done crystaline entities, goo-creatures, gaseous forms, beings of light and other amorphous, non-humanoid beings, tiny (nonhumaoid) robots.

tc556guy yeah the early seasons across the franchise were a bit shaky. The long story arcs are my favorite. I don’t like some aspects of Star Trek, like no money/greed. That would just make people lazy
The philosophy WAS the heart of the Trek Universe, not the action adventure side of the show. The action was really just to showcase different ethical scenarios and the potential for them to play out either badly or well depending on the participants atttudes to the moral dillemma they faced.
This clip was also a great way of explaining why most all of the different alien species in this look alike and are anthropomorphic. But great comment nonetheless
Agreed, something I sadly think has been forgotten with the Kelvin timeline and STD. Star Trekwas always its’ best when it was a show about diplomacy and philosophy (measure of a man being my favourite).
I dont get why everyone acts like action and adventure are curse words. Star Treks greatest episodes had both, and some of the top 10 eps of all time on nearly everyones playlist had less of the former (I'm looking at you best of both worlds.) The philosophy and the moralizing are great... in the right amount and blended well with adventure and excitement. Best Star Trek Movie? The Wrath of Khan. Not exactly an exercising in philosophical navel gazing, just a good old fashioned sub battle in space with a revenge plot villain. Best trek movie.
This episode encapsulate the message of all star trek series that if we get out of our own way and stop seeing whatever deference we have and acknowledge we are all one race, open up and get out of our own way anything is possible even the stars themselves.
Yeah, one of my favorite scenes/episodes in all of Star Trek. Especially Picard and the Romulan at the end... the possibilities which are merely hinted at...one word: hope!

This episode reminds me a lot of another similar episode, which is rated as one of the very best of all the Star Trek shows, “The Inner Light”. Watch it to see the similarities, if you haven’t had the pleasure to have seen it already, a very moving story.

Brilliant piece of writing that subtly retcons the whole "why do the most common alien species look so humanoid?" complaint that crops up every now and then. Even better that this long dead ancestor is played by Salome Jens, who is compelling and casually malevolent as the Founder.
A huge lost opportunity to integrate this (with the the same actress) with DS9s Dominion war. Even in DS9 the lead changeling admits they began as solids. This was an opportunity for Odo to bring that sory full circle. Truly breaks my heart because both stories are amazing writing. Trek at its best.
"One day..." And then The Dominion showed up which united Federation, Klingon, Romulan and Cardassian. Yes the Cardassians allied with them at first but at the end of the war a united Alpha Quadrant was victorious.
(At 3:33 to 4:09) The Romulan captain was played by actor Maurice Roëves. The designation of "captain" was not spoken, but comes from this episode's script. It presumably reflects his position rather that his rank, which does not appear in the known Romulan ranks. The Star Trek Customizable Card Game gives his name as Galathon. The Way of D'era RPG sourcebook calls him Savul.
Funny thing is that the same actress who portrayed the ancient alien in this episode also portrayed the female changeling who unintentionally united all these cultures against her organization. Ironic, huh?
A part of me wishes Picard had one of his classic/great speeches when he spoke to the Romulan Captain. While I do like the simple gestures he gave, which I think was good and MAYBE fitting for the scene, I really wish Picard said more to him. Anything really, i assume the point was that Picard was in shock that a Romulan would even acknowledge what they’d just heard and understood it, i wish Picard would have pressed him more in that moment. Made him say the things he was thinking. But maybe that was the point all alomg. For us to wish the things he didn’t say but wanted to.
I don't think more needed to be said, but I wish Picard would have made a much bigger smile than the subtle smile he actually did. I think if Picard smiled bigger, it would have made the scene much more impactful.

This is why i fell in love with star trek in the first place.When this episode was aired i actually thought they should have made it a 90 min special.it deserved that.
What I loved about this episode on a strange note was how close the friendship of both the federation and Klingons were here, the bird of preys were disabled and Picard invited them on bored as part of the expedition and they were genuinely friends about it, no ulterior motives on either side the two just wanted to work together and that I feel is strengthened when Word and the other Klingon are ready to die together regardless of allegiances
Too bad we can't understand that now. All humans have something in common with each other. We all came from a common ancestor, we all bleed red, we all feel pain, we all feel pleasure, we all get sick, we all die. How we treat each other in this life should be with respect and compassion. A Gene Roddenberry Universe.

I remember the Professor’s gift of the statue to Picard. How we see ourselves, how others see us & how we really are. If I had to choose between the episode with Picard & the flute, this one wins. I’m glad to see so many others who felt this subject deserved much more attention.

I love how the Founders were able to find this genetic source code in the Gamma Quadrant. Then, when they had to send forward a leader to deal with the solids, that leader took the face and voice from the genetic source code.
This was such a cool episode. I love the mystery of it. This is what Star Trek is about. Like Q said its not about mapping stars and studying nebulae, but charting the unknowable possibilities of existence.

He was my hero as a kid, but once I hit puberty he didn't want anything to do with me anymore emotionally abandoning me during the years when I needed him the most, and he abandoned me completely as an adult. Watching TNG with him when I was young is one of many fond memories I have with him that make me miss him. I wish we could watch it together again someday.
I hope he isn't just too afraid to face the fact he failed me as a father in so many ways. I hope it's not just pride or shame. I don't really care about any of that now. I forgive him. He did what he knew how, and he wasn't perfect just like everyone else. I just want my dad to be there for me so I can be there for him, same as I always have my whole life.

I love how the Romulan of all people is the one who truly gets it. They may not be logical like the Vulkans any more, but that doesn't make them evil. They are the victims of the human condition like everyone else and even they can have hope. Loved this episode.

Ed Towel I’m lucky. I’m currently watching TNG for my first time and it’s been fantastic. A little dated but the story for most episodes is solid.
It gets better. In a season or two everyone gets comfortable with their roles. After you finish move on to deep space nine and then the movies.

It's a touching scene honestly. A race of advanced beings set out into the galaxy and found no other forms like themselves. That must have been severely depressing to them, such a vast universe with no life. So they took upon themselves to seed life everywhere they could. It's touching. Damn good writing.

I always felt they underplayed Picard there. He is so diplomatic and smart. I feel he would have said more and given a better bridge to the Romulan commander. Then again maybe he knew a short and simple answer would be far more respected by his kind.
I love the look on Picard's face when he says "one day." It's cautious, hard, and full of hope. It will be a long time and a lot of blood shed before that day comes, and he knows it, but is determined that they will get there eventually.
A compassionate Romulan!! At least HE understood the depth of the message. There's hope for them yet if there are more like him. And future episodes and movies proves that there are.

P.S. We don't know AT ALL that Odo is the most traveled Changeling, you're making unfounded assumptions based on very little. The female Changeling said many young ones were sent out, and not all returned. There's absolutely no way of knowing where they all ended up. As we saw with Odo and Voyager, beings can end up just about anywhere with natural phenomena- and that doesn't include unnatural, like Q or the Borg transwarp conduits. Then there's even the different TIME possibilities. To assume Odo is the most far traveled, just because we know him as the most far traveled KNOWN, and it's impossible for any others to have gone farther, is just arrogant. One could have ended up so far away that, like Voyager, it would take decades or centuries to return and then THEY would be the most far traveled Changeling known. Key here is KNOWN.
Our knowledge is only current as of the now, and a discovery tomorrow can change everything. Further, you can prove or disprove the known, but not the unknown.

I _love_ the First Humanoids. I love them even more because in the decades since this episode came out the writers of Trek have had the decency to not ruin them by having any First Humanoid weapons show up or for an army of them to reappear and want to conquer the universe or anything like that. All they wanted was to be remembered, and that’s been honored.
The First Humanoids did pop up in _Star Trek Online._ A living archive of them, hundreds of them in stasis. You know what happens when they wake up? They’re immensely grateful and express a desire to go out and see what the other races have built. They’re given huge overtones of proud parents, happy that their kids have grown up well and are doing fine for themselves. No judgment or condescension.
I really hope no writer ever decides to do something dark with them.

I love the klingon response. He expected to die in honorable combat, and the baldie's speech of unity crushed his hopes and dreams. The kardassian was probably looking to bring brothers and sisters new wealth, and ended up with a message saying everyone is related. Of course humans and romulans value knowledge more than their personal goals, so they were somewhat delighted.

The philosophy WAS the heart of the Trek Universe, not the action adventure side of the show. The action was really just to showcase different ethical scenarios and the potential for them to play out either badly or well depending on the participants atttudes to the moral dillemma they faced.

Agreed, something I sadly think has been forgotten with the Kelvin timeline and STD. Star Trekwas always its’ best when it was a show about diplomacy and philosophy (measure of a man being my favourite).
I dont get why everyone acts like action and adventure are curse words. Star Treks greatest episodes had both, and some of the top 10 eps of all time on nearly everyones playlist had less of the former (I'm looking at you best of both worlds.) The philosophy and the moralizing are great... in the right amount and blended well with adventure and excitement. Best Star Trek Movie? The Wrath of Khan. Not exactly an exercising in philosophical navel gazing, just a good old fashioned sub battle in space with a revenge plot villain. Best trek movie.

This episode reminds me a lot of another similar episode, which is rated as one of the very best of all the Star Trek shows, “The Inner Light”. Watch it to see the similarities, if you haven’t had the pleasure to have seen it already, a very moving story.

Brilliant piece of writing that subtly retcons the whole "why do the most common alien species look so humanoid?" complaint that crops up every now and then. Even better that this long dead ancestor is played by Salome Jens, who is compelling and casually malevolent as the Founder.
A huge lost opportunity to integrate this (with the the same actress) with DS9s Dominion war. Even in DS9 the lead changeling admits they began as solids. This was an opportunity for Odo to bring that sory full circle. Truly breaks my heart because both stories are amazing writing. Trek at its best.
The klingon certainly didnt think it was the best moment in ST history.

And then The Dominion showed up which united Federation, Klingon, Romulan and Cardassian. Yes the Cardassians allied with them at first but at the end of the war a united Alpha Quadrant was victorious.

(At 3:33 to 4:09) The Romulan captain was played by actor Maurice Roëves. The designation of "captain" was not spoken, but comes from this episode's script. It presumably reflects his position rather that his rank, which does not appear in the known Romulan ranks.
The Star Trek Customizable Card Game gives his name as Galathon.
The Way of D'era RPG sourcebook calls him Savul.

Which is idiotic, war is natural and is required to cull the numbers to avoid higher consumption of resources. War is population control.
And now its the premise for an entire season of discovery as to attempt to glean any of what was excellent about 90'sTrek.
A part of me wishes Picard had one of his classic/great speeches when he spoke to the Romulan Captain. While I do like the simple gestures he gave, which I think was good and MAYBE fitting for the scene, I really wish Picard said more to him. Anything really, i assume the point was that Picard was in shock that a Romulan would even acknowledge what they’d just heard and understood it, i wish Picard would have pressed him more in that moment. Made him say the things he was thinking. But maybe that was the point all alomg. For us to wish the things he didn’t say but wanted to.
AS much as I like his speeches, I feel it would have felt out of place there.
I don't think more needed to be said, but I wish Picard would have made a much bigger smile than the subtle smile he actually did. I think if Picard smiled bigger, it would have made the scene much more impactful.
Nearly an "Inner Light" moment...where a TV show transcended and became ART.

I think it was Treks way of explaining why all the Aliens look alike beyond budgetary reasons.

This is why i fell in love with star trek in the first place.When this episode was aired i actually thought they should have made it a 90 min special.it deserved that.
Yeah, and with a better ending. Episode was awesome but the ending felt rushed. Klingon was speaking for the audience.
What I loved about this episode on a strange note was how close the friendship of both the federation and Klingons were here, the bird of preys were disabled and Picard invited them on bored as part of the expedition and they were genuinely friends about it, no ulterior motives on either side the two just wanted to work together and that I feel is strengthened when Word and the other Klingon are ready to die together regardless of allegiances
Now this is Star Trek!
Too bad we can't understand that now. All humans have something in common with each other. We all came from a common ancestor, we all bleed red, we all feel pain, we all feel pleasure, we all get sick, we all die. How we treat each other in this life should be with respect and compassion. A Gene Roddenberry Universe.

We could learn a thing or two from this episode. It's meant to encourage us to unify and cooperate with all humans on planet earth, instead of fighting wars over our cultures and territories. Because we are all more alike than we think, and setting our differences aside could bring us closer to the future that Star Trek shows us.

I remember the Professor’s gift of the statue to Picard. How we see ourselves, how others see us & how we really are. If I had to choose between the episode with Picard & the flute, this one wins. I’m glad to see so many others who felt this subject deserved much more attention.

@@tommypetraglia4688 I always thought Vash was cooler & Kamala sexier for Picard. But in a weird way, I feel Salome Jens (female humanoid messenger), Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher) and Linda Thorsen (Cardassian Gul Ocett) are all just as hot as Famke Jenssen (Kamala)
I love how the Founders were able to find this genetic source code in the Gamma Quadrant. Then, when they had to send forward a leader to deal with the solids, that leader took the face and voice from the genetic source code.
This was such a cool episode. I love the mystery of it. This is what Star Trek is about. Like Q said its not about mapping stars and studying nebulae, but charting the unknowable possibilities of existence.
Very much one of the best moments in Star Trek history and in all of Star Trek!!!
