During the Gold Rush period many overseas labor came to Australia to try their luck to find gold nugget in the river. And obviously people from coastal province of China who are Cantonese speaking, appeared more diligent and lucky than all other people so they kept yelling out Ding Kum, Ding Kum when they found a gold nugget. Eventually it was translated as an Australian slang as ding Kum.
