I agree with Rory. That transmission noise is absolutely NOT normal. The good news is there are plenty of ZF-5 transmissions out there. Even if you find one from a small block truck or diesel truck, all you'd need to do is put the front part of your transmission's case on the back half of that other transmission. Might have to switch to diesel clutch disc if you're using the diesel trans though. There were 2 separate input shaft sizes.

I do love that truck. I love mine so much more with a 12 valve in it. I would suggest cutting the rear corners plum off the bed all the way back towards the rear tires. Then just plate the holes you created. The blue truck looks great so I have no doubt this one can be made nice as well. Mine gets 19 mpg running no faster than 60 mph. I also would recommend getting newer style slide ons and l arms that would stay level when lifting and even up a touch higher behind the tire instead of the ones that hang down like those. Those work yes but can be a bugger to get in and out when not on perfect level ground. the new style is easy to build as well. Nice truck.

A long Truck recovered with a Long Truck on a narrow dirt road with tight switchbacks. A good job to test the Big D.
As I noticed the lack of shifter knob on Big D, I also noted that a cool Aluminum Hurst T-Handle Shifter would have hammered a good-sized bruise in Rory's leg.
Also, while cool-looking, those aluminum shifters get extremely warm when left in the sun all day.

For the front axle lift issue- have you thought about weight transfer ballast tanks??? One of the older bonneted trucks where I used to work had it (tends to be less of an issue with the cabovers that make up all the fleet now lol) had two water tanks in them (about 200-250L capacity each- about 50-55 gallons in yankish lol) one was in the body of the tow bed basically just in front of the rear axle, the other was a 'front bumper' basically a heavy duty steel 'push bumper'/winch mount that was also a large tank that ran the full width of the nose- and it had a pump that took about 3 mins to empty a tank- the center tank was kept full and the front one empty- but when you had 'front end lift' issues, turn the tap and flip the switch for the pump- a couple of minutes later you had an extra quarter of a tonne on the front axle...made a hell of a difference in that old F250 LOL- if you were getting too heavy with the water on board for really heavy tows and you were at the max weight limit for the truck- a major issue here- they have portable scales in many police cars, mermaids utes etc (weigh bridge inspectors in a 'truck'/ute)- you have the option of simply opening a tap and dumping the water out and gaining that quarter tonne of payload back!- it tended to not be an issue if you had it on the slings, but on the underlift it was a problem simply because of the longer 'arm length' the underlift needs (especially as many 4wds in Australia have bullbars etc on the font, means the underlift has to be run further out... meaning it is a longer 'lever' on the back of the towtruck... 😀

I think you just might be onto something with your transmission bearing noise diagnosis , having rebuilt a few of those. I found it best to charge all the bearing at one time. After carefully inspecting everything inside the box plus the shift railes and detents . Replacing all warn parts. If you want it to last a long time and stay in gear . When I started working, most vehicles had manual transmission , warren hubs, or solid front hubs. Locking and limited-slip differentials were extremely were extremely rare. The first one was a Torrington no spin. It came out in 1941 for tandem axle trucks, mostly military .

Rory, has anyone suggested that you may have a tapered gear in the transmission that is badly worn? I drove a semi truck over 40 years ago that kept jumping out of gear and progressively got worse. After rebuilding the transmission twice we found a worn gear that held tight under acceleration but jumped out with less engine pressure.

Another recovery that went well, my experience with people who say that the weight is not too bad is that they don't know or are just saying something. I once had a 50-ton hydraulic jack during a repair along the highway sink about 8 centimeters into the asphalt. According to the truck driver, he was under the weight limit. With 2 extra 40-ton jacks we raised the front axle of the trailer off the ground . We replaced the broken wheel bearings. And after the trailer had been pulled far enough forward, we knocked the last jack out of the asphalt with a sledgehammer. So you see again that you cannot always count on the information provided by the customer
    Nice job.

I know Rory was nervous on this trip! A bit tight and heavy! 👏 Great job 👏

Amazing country, and refreshing to see the lack of ego with other drivers on the trail.

Glad to see that Big D got some new shoes. Hope you can find some new dual wheels a clutch and maybe transmission for it soon.

When I see a tow job like this, I'm amazed at the capabilities of these trucks pulling thousands of pounds of dead weight up a steep incline. And not breaking down every single time!

Great recovery for big D, Guess you need to do some repairs to him before the next recovery. I think throwout bearing is gone.

Rory, nice clutch slipping from Low to first gear, like a master!! I learned stick on a flat bed F350 working as a teenager doing hardwood floor.

Fix or Repair D. I could not tell if you had the truck idled up, but that would makes the hydraulics work better. Nice recovery and oh, what a view.
