I had to be the weirdest teenager in the 80's while most kids my age were listening to new wave or heavy metal i could be found listening to Engelbert Humperdinck and Tom Jones thanks grandma for introducing me to this music...miss ya

@@michaelasay8587 Karen had the voice of an angel...but she's just one of many i failed to include in my post only for one reason. if I named every singer that I was introduced to and enjoyed with grandma as a teen the list would be quite long . but rest assured Karen is on the list

One of the best set of pipes and a crooner amongst the best ever to sing to the ladies. Remember y’all, he stuck with his sweetheart through his marriage and her sad loss to dementia. Not many celebrities would do that. He is a good man.

This was my grandfather's favorite song. Back in the 60's, he would take my brother and I to a diner for breakfast every other Sunday. He would give us a quarter to play 3 songs on the jukebox. The only request he made was to play 'G13' - "Please Release Me" by Engelbert. We would play 'Sugar, Sugar' by the Archies or 'Crimson and Clover' by Tommy James and the Shondells among others but always 'G13'. Thanks for the look back and reminding me of my wonderful grandpa!

He was often compared to Tom Jones, but his style of music was more mellow and calm! My favorite by him is After The Loving!
The lyrics are very true! Love can sometimes feel like a curse, like your trapped and can't get out! A lot like the movie Get Out, especially when the main character is in the sunken place! Love and life are all over the place with no explanation of any kind! But we're still here, and no one knows why! Later people!

Hi Angela, Perhaps try his other great hit 'The Last Waltz' a favourite of my nan's, Interesting life he was born in India to a British Army Officer then moved to Leicester in the English Midlands age 10 his actual name is Arnold George Dorsey but used the name Gerry until he decided to change it to Engelbert Humperdinck (Like you Do!) He's still performing at age 86 and has sold approx 140 million records worldwide, Cheers Jim, UK X

This song came out when I was 6 years old so I've been familiar with it almost all my life. I haven't heard it in a long time but it really has a different type of message hearing it as an adult versus when I was a kid.

Engelbert was the less Spicey Tom Jones alternative. Was a mainstay in Las Vegas. Lost his wife to COVID in 2020. One of the purest voices ever. He did a duet with Marie Osmond. Check it out on You Tube you will love it.

So pleased someone suggested Englebert or us brits just call him Enge..he had a successful tv show in the late 60's and 70's and was a kind of rival to Tom Jones..please try and review some of his other big hits..Le Bicyclette de Versailles..Quando Quando Quando..A Man Without Love..Ten Guitars.. The last Waltz ...be is a very down to earth guy and although always looked immaculate was very unassuming in real life..a true gentleman..🇬🇧💞🙏🙏🎶🎵

We need to understand this song in light of the times. Prior to the 1970s it was still quite taboo not to stick to your marriage vows or not to want to find a way to solve the problems of the marriage. This is one of those songs that was kind of breakthrough in that it suggested that it was ok to reason otherwise and not waste your life in a loveless relationship.

Yes it is a lot sadder than I noticed when I sang this a lot as a kid. Good on you, cheaters are so destructive, corrupt and completely uncaring of the nuclear fallout they cause. This one at least doesn't talk about any kids in the mix, to bear the mess they had no part in creating.

Keep in mind when you listen to these songs that many times the performer had nothing to do with writing the song or the sentiment behind it. This song was written by Eddie Miller, Robert Yount and Dub WIlliams back in 1949, not Engelbert (real name Arnold George Dorsey).....
