I ordered Carnevale, base and starter. I am a lot more canny these days about skirmish wargames. They have to possess the quality of a Mata Hari to allure me. Good review, it allowed me to make an informed decision. As I think I mentioned I do have Mordheim, Frostgrave and Okko. As I said to the lass "frankly my dear I do need this". I may have been nodding towards Gone With The Wind but it's one of the reasons I married an ante bellum girl. Thanks for your work again. I will take the liberty, which I think George the Third tried to do, of recommending JJwargames which is really an excellent blog. I don't know him but he also occasionally records the uncommon. With best wishes.
I took out Carnevale for a solo run last weekend, great fun. Thank you for the uncommon recommendation. Even my long suffering wife nodded approvingly towards the 3D terrain. She is Irish and one day she is going to wake up and realise she married an Englishman. I distract her with skirmish wargames. Works for me.
I recently got the 2 player starter box and after playing two test games I decided to delve deeper into the game :D Even my wife likes the visuals and while she might not be up for playing it to often, she does like to paint these minis together with me. I've gotten one MDF building to see how I enjoy assembling those (and now there is a bit more on the way ;) ) and a few more minis for both the Rashaar and guild, as well as the starter box for the Patricians.
I don't quite understand the part you said about using command abilities. You said each time you use one, "it lowers them". Then you say something about initiative. What gets lowered? Your command abilities power? Your initiative roll?
It lowers the number of command points you have. It is one of the STATS that some of the characters have, but those points must be expended to activate command abilities.
Ron, I had played the Escape from San Canciano expansion before the England match yesterday. In many ways I had preferred it to the core set. The rulebook was not overburdened with fluff. It's a disappointment that the figures are still bedivilled by flash. I had bought the first two retail editions of Dungeon Saga Origins and the figures are so much better. As for the Dutch I understand they inhabit low lying polders and houses of ill repute and burned Rochester in the mid to late 17th century for which I have not yet forgiven them. It behoves English gentlemen to administer a damned good thrashing to such scurrilous fellows which is, of course, exactly what we did. We have cliffs, they do not, it just makes it easier for us to look down on them.
Carnevale figures can be flashy. They also sometimes have very brittle ankles. The newer sculpts are better that way. As to fluff, I wish the would release a printing of the new rules without the fluff!

I hope you enjoy it. It is both a very good and a very beautiful game.

It is a pretty looking game!!!!
yeah. it is certainly visually appealing, that's part of what drew me to it!

Just picked this up. Trying to make a move away from GW. And this is one of my choice and the other is Deadzone.
It is a lot of fun (and less expensive then GW)
Those are exactly the games I chose as well, following this GW exodus.
