I had just watched Ich halte treülich still by the very young boy alto Peter Schreier from about 1949 when this was highlighted. I decided to fast forward 30 years to hear Peter Schreier Tenor. Two excellent recordings of a very different nature, what a wonderful artist Peter Schreier was.
One of the finest renditions of this Mozart gem. Despite the overly resonant acoustics and a picture that is mildly out of synch, this is up there with the very very best.
What a wonderful instrument the human voice is. In my life time (since 1937) we have been blessed with many fine tenors. It is impossible to define best but Peter Schreier is amongst the top of the list. We all have our favourites and I criticise none. My own favourite is Beniamino Gigli, but his diction does not match the perfection of Peter Schreier. The male voices have been equally matched by the ladies, and it is a wonderful privilege to be able to hear .............all of them, for which I thank God.
Would only my girl friend of my youthful 20ies who was so fond of him & made me hear tons of his recordings have seen this video... Gorgeous version, vocally & other.
Ups. Lo que quería decir es que es muy bueno este hombre. A lo mejor el suyo no es el timbre más bonito, pero está muy bien cantado. Al nivel de los grandes mozartianos, como Wunderlich o Araiza. Nada que ver con lo que hace Pavarotti, por poner un ejemplo.
No es el timbre más bonito? No sé que escucharás o cuáles serán tus referentes de cantantes o voces, pero la voz de este cantante es una de las más bellas, un timbre hermoso, provisto de unos armónicos que hacen de su voz, singular. No puedes compararlo con Pavarotti, puesto que Peter canta un repertorio especializado, como los lieder alemán e incluso, en ópera, canta las arias de Mozart, ya que son las más cercana a su estilo, refinado, netamente alemán. La comparación con el gran Luciano es injusta y odiosa, un estilo netamente italiano.

Have you heard Francisco Araiza sing this, he is truly glorious. This version is pretty good though, I'm just biased ;-)
