  • Last week we took a look at cars that changed rapidly over a few short years. This week, we are taking a look at cars that haven't changed for a long time. The sprint car.

    F1 cars are so awesome that they almost match the power-to-weight ratio of a Sprint Car 😎

    Kind of crazy to think f1 and sprint cars are really just distant cousins. They were so similar for so long.

    I grew up watching IMSA/ALMS/Grand Am/Le Mans style sports cars, psycho GT stuff like Bathurst, open wheel and NASCAR, but never really watched dirt track stuff until I hung out with some drivers from Mexico who came up to drive at a Legends and Mini Sprints in El Centro CA a few years ago. It was my first ever dirt race and took me back to racing Radio Control Losi Mini Sliders back when I was a kid. This was so cool... I don't get why so many fans get toxic over "this kind of racing is better" yada yada yada.
    Thanks for the video

      Toxic is right. Understand and love all racing! Makes life so much better!

    This video is pretty good, but you were confusing Sprint Cars with Silver Crown Champ Cars. The Silver Crown cars are the holdovers to the old Indy roadsters, and they still run today. They have a 10 inch longer wheelbase then a sprint car, and run smaller engines. Sprint cars never ran at Indy. They were considered a stepping stone to Indy back in the day, but never ran there. Otherwise, this is a good video.

      @jeremeymcdude ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The current Silver Crown cars are essentially just large sprint cars but you're correct that they are what the Indy Roadsters and the USAC National Championship cars were before rear engines.

    Man this vid made me think of my great grandfather who won a race in the 1920s at the York fairgrounds. Racing history in family runs deep, deeper than i realized lol. Another bangin vid man🤙🏁

    In a historical coincidence to his Milwaukee run, AJ's final Indy Car win at Pocono in 1981 also included dirt cars! In a bid to build car count during the CART/USAC feud that year 8 Silver Crown cars were entered into the race. None of them did great and only 4 finished the race, a best finish of 11th (18 laps down), but historically significant because it marked the last time an upright dirt car would ever compete in an Indy Car race. 🏁

    There wasn't much difference between F1 cars, sprint cars, and IndyCars, as well! In fact, sprint cars & IndyCars intertwined at the Indy 500

    • @JoeLuskRacing
      @JoeLuskRacing  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Indeed. Back in the day when they were just race cars!!

      Roger -Ford- Ward raced Sebring in 1959 against the sports cars with a Midget. Looked very cool, but didn't do well unfortunately. I'm guessing it was running two rigid axles at the world's bumpiest road course.

      @@raffriff42 I think he ran it at Lime Rock too and was more successful.

    I would absolutely love to see someone take on the challenge of a Mid Engine open wheel dirt oval car as well as an attempt at a front engined Indycar/F1 car just to see how these types of vehicles would compare to the current day vehicles.

    • @DanielHarveyDyer
      @DanielHarveyDyer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nissan built a front engined Le Mans Prototype a few years ago and it was bad, whereas the rear engined Porsches Audis and Toyotas it was designed to compete against was almost F1 speed, so I think that's the closest you're going to get to an answer

    • @The52car
      @The52car ปีที่แล้ว

      There were attempts to run rear engine dirt cars and sprint cars but they weren't very successful and I think USAC made them illegal.

    • @jeremeymcdude
      @jeremeymcdude ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DanielHarveyDyer I think the Long Boye was bad only for specific reasons not directly related to the front engined configuration and more based on the Hybrid system that didnt work.

    The batmobile from the 80’s that Gary Balough ran used ground effect that F1 used throughout the 80’s. It also sort of influenced the northeast big block mods that in the south use wings also.

    Sprint cars seem to resemble the british E.R.A. cars of the late '30s early '50s, with their upright design and solid live axle front and rear, while the champ/indy/speedway cars resembled the continetal cars.

      AJ's run is the whole thing that spurred this video - when I first saw it a few years ago I was fascinated. Never dove much deeper but it was good to learn about the history of the race car! Gotta remember where we came from to get to where we are going!

    A surprisingly intelligent discussion of what I initially thought was going to be a ridiculous comparison. Very good summation of the development of racing here in the US and in Europe into the modern era.

    3:03 both of those are actually roadster. Google Troy Ruttman's 1952 Indy Winner for an example of an upright car (drive sits above the drive line instead of next to).
    Great video tho!

    2:40 I could be mistaken but the term "big cars" and "champ cars" was used synonymously. Back then all the races (except Indy) were dirt. The differences was sprint cars, because they races shorter races, smaller tracks, and generally had smaller shorter wheel bases.

    • @The52car
      @The52car ปีที่แล้ว

      And of course then there were midgets which were much smaller than Sprints with smaller engines too.

    Not irony. Smart. Ricor knew that electric would never outperform the internal combustion engine once it was perfected. Mainly because from the first drop to the last drop in the tank, performance didn't diminish as it does with electric vehicles.

      He's calling it ironic because of the current push for electric cars right now. Hence the Tesla logo fading in.

    That's 1000 with the electric motors engine alone f1 cars have 800-850 so sprint cars have them by even more for power to weight ratio
