No, he did not. He placed a condition on it. A condition not legally required of the officer . Big difference. What do you think was going to happen if the driver disagreed with the officer? Same result. There is a reason why the host just called the officer names instead of citing court cases of how the officer is legally wrong .

Avoid an escalation? Are you kidding? She suspected him of being a man who just threatened people with gun. Escalating is just a buzz word to those who aren’t in that situation. It’s a two way street. By drawing on and covering an armed or suspected to be armed people , it lets them know they will lose and are more likely to surrender than chance beating the officer to the draw and killing them - which happens. And only happens less often because the vest is there - which even if the bullet hits the vest hits is like a sledgehammer and people can die from its blunt force trauma

My bad. I’m in two discussions. Got it mixed up.
In this discussion I should have said . He is required to give the officer the drivers license. The officer is not required to tell why he wants it until they get to court . The driver escalated the encounter and lost. The officer was legally correct and in his guidelines. The driver escalated the situation twice in his refusal or his putting a condition on his compliance . A condition the officer does not have to grant . Then he resisted ( non-compliant ) with the arrest . That’s on the driver .
