this song is so relatable coming from a broken family, i had to deal with alcoholic abusive parents, and i had to take the parental role most of my life... i had to be so responsible at a young age... i love my mother endlessly, but the fact she continued to stay with such an abusive man for so long haunts me.. that line 'we were born into a family, not a fortune' speaks to me so much.. ofc my childhood was awful most the time, i still had such wonderful siblings and the love for my mom is endless, those few good memories outweigh the pain
Derek's voice is beautiful in every way. Empty Days & Sleepless Nights was definitely my favorite record of 2011, probably my favorite record of all time. Flawless band.
You know what I love more than anything about this band? The fact that they DO make these acoustic songs as well as the hardcore ones. They can convey so much more emotion, doing this, than other bands who do only acoustic or only hardcore.
Defeater are amazing! Even their heavy stuff, if you really listen to it they are genius, you just have to give them a chance and I would bet money on it that they will grow on you. So much talent.
The acoustic stuff brings in new fans for sure. But you should all listen to the old albums in order. Gotta love the way he describes the story about world war 2.
well i never liked hardcore but this band is like wow... amazing!!! i really like the concept that the whole album is a story, and i think it's pretty unique for this genre! well i have to say that if i see this story in a short movie i will defenantly dislike it, it's nothing more than misery, sadness and failure in a family, nothing interesting no conclusion, but i dont care, its the music tha y hear i admire and respect how they managed to combine the music with the lyrics, i am really amazed.
I was playing some of their heavier songs. My mom was going "WHY ARE YOU LISTENING TO THIS, THEY'RE JUST SCREAMING AND SHOUTING!", I started playing this song instead, she goes "Oh this is much better! See, why don't you listen to bands like this all the time instead?" lol
Luckily I'm older (pushing 40) and after half a lifetime of playing, studying, occasionally writing and listening to an encyclopedic range of music by family and friends have all learned better than to question the legitimacy of anything I'm listening to or they know they'll get a dissertation on how screaming is simply a stylistic variation on the voice and how it's timbre is the only appropriate one for portraying certain stories and emotions. Don't question the artistic merit of music I like unless you're ready to get a rambling screed about music history lol
i hate all the new defeater fans who all only like i dont mind, and none of their other songs, yet then they say they 'love them'. like fss these guys have been awesome for ages, and have many other songs than just that one.
Yo, if you like this check out La Dispute. because of them I know of Defeater. Gotta admit, as much as i love Defeater, La Dispute is better hands down.
Honestly, I would prefer their acoustic music over their regular style any day. He sings so much better than he.. Whatever you'd like to call it he does.

So many childhood recollections. Somehow, it gives me some closure, honesty. Thank you, Defeater.

This song brought so much back that I haven't dealt with, goin on 15 years. Never heard a song that hit me so hard, literally brought me to tears.
It’s so moving, will always love defeater
I love this song, it's so beautiful.
reminds me of when my mom was an alcoholic, but now shes recovering.
I'm so happy she found recovery.
It's 2024 and I'll never forget my buddy Nick who showed me this song what a beautiful soul
Defeater will always find a way to bring a grown man to tears.
Defeater are amazing! Even their heavy stuff, if you really listen to it they are genius, you just have to give them a chance and I would bet money on it that they will grow on you. So much talent.
Defeater. I love your soft songs
That is really amazing to hear, just keep listening to music. Music can help and solve so much and can get you a lot closer to people.
This whole album is so fantastic. They have so much more depth now.
This transition of his life flashing before his eyes and the album turning into folk is simply genius
This song hits home every time.
Theme song for my childhood
Same here. Break the cycle.
Hope you're well!
Pure Gold 🩵🤟✌️🌄
I love all the acoustic songs, but this being my most favorite. Sorry "I Don't Mind." You come second...
eventually one of the best songs ever written
Acoustic is where they shine..
This record is absolutely incredible.
So much respect for them now.
They're amazing. Very honest
Is it bad that this made me cry.
This hit my feelings really hard.
i cried too this cuts deep such a great band
That is exactly what this sort of song should do to you.
Let it out brother.
Try la dispute if you think this is crying material
these guys deserve so much more fans than they have. they're amazing.
Their acoustic songs are their best songs
This band makes it worth getting out of bed in the morning.
this song is so good
It's a fictional story but it has a lot in it that echos with the past for a lot of us
The acoustic stuff brings in new fans for sure. But you should all listen to the old albums in order. Gotta love the way he describes the story about world war 2.
I can't believe how closely this relates to my life as a child. Jesus.

the lyrics. i'm speechless.

They eventually accept that it's them who just don't understand it
makes me wanna cry ;__;
@ConDog5555 You need those 5 minutes of silence to weep at the song's pure beauty.
cant wait til dereks solo acoustic album comes out.
ive loved this band since before they were "Defeater". i remember when they were called "Sluts".
the myspace link..oh the memoriessssss
***** i know right. the feels and nostalgia.
wooo dude at bull moose!!!!!!!
@damonskates It comes from this insanely talented band full of musicians who have open minds unlike half of their Hardcore fans
esta canción es muy buena !!!!
I don't know why, but this album reminds me the book from John Fante: 1933 Was a Bad Year.
Hmm you know, Im not sure.
Maybe.... different influences.
HUUUUHH GASP.
What's sad is i can relate to this
defeater is AMAZING
look it up, its a fact
This song is the story of my life :/
Agreed. I actually wish the vocalist would use more clean vocals in their metal songs to balance things out cause he's got a good singing voice.
They had also the QUIEt THE LONGING this song is about his parents/family.
I’m going to get unwanted tattooed on my arm it’s going to be my defeater tattoo ahaha 🖤🖤🖤
i hate all the new defeater fans who all only like i dont mind, and none of their other songs, yet then they say they 'love them'. like fss these guys have been awesome for ages, and have many other songs than just that one.
all we have problems
Is this Defeater's most popular song?
is this the same vocalist theyve always had? sounds like a different band even
I love the fact that he's not screaming. Actually sounds like good music*
Yo, if you like this check out La Dispute.

yeah, you're opinion is the right one, my bad
are you implying that screaming can't be good in music?
omg so funny! -.-
Lol. Everyone on TH-cam had the exact same, shitty, abusive, horrible childhood. Everyone can relate to everything...
Defeater has always been great. You guys were just slow on the uptake.
is this song about breathing out of your butt?
ps great song
where the fuck did this acoustic shit come from
:c
:(
Not true at all, every single one of their songs are amazing.
@krystasaysRAWR *we're
