Thanks for this, and for leaving in all the awkward bits where things don't magically pop off - that's what always happens to me in real life, but watching most videos on youtube you'd never know it. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
Appreciate the part at the bench, showing the metal frame being bent to the dash kit. Recall from using one a long time ago, it wasn't self explanatory. About to replace 2 stereo.
The harness is used to connect the OEM connector to your new stereo. Most car stereos will not just plug into any car. The original plug is paired with the plug on the wiring harness. So, yes, if you're adding a new stereo you'll need a harness.
Great video! I installed an aftermarket stereo replacing my factory stereo on my 2002 Ford Explorer about a year ago with this video. I bought a cheapo single din with the slot I currently use for receipts and it has served me well. I recently decided to treat myself or maybe punish myself, lol, and bought a double din cheapo w/ navigation and reverse camera (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01E71ISNS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and a TV tuner add on. I forgot what I did so I am watching your video to refresh myself to install this beast! Do you know if I will need to rewire a new wiring harness being I already did for the current stereo and if so what is the url of your harness video? Any tips on installing the camera and tv if you are familiar with that will also be appreciated. Maybe you can upgrade to a double din beast and make a video on that too? That would be awesome for me!
My wife also got a nice pair of speakers for Christmas. I just haven't installed them yet. That will be the next explorer specific video. As to whether you need an amp or not, good quality speakers make a huge difference in sound quality. Beyond that, it starts to be limited return on investment.
I also have a 2002 Explorer and was wondering what brand of dash adapter you used? I bought a Metra brand for 1995 and up Ford from Best Buy and it's too small. The only other choice they had was for 2004 and up.
I installed a stationary antenna on the 99 /from a explore without power antenna. Because I can't find a power replacement! Now I need an antenna coupler. Now I've got two male antenna ends. I'll see after I get the coupling if it works. It's been a long while since I took out the power antenna. Seems like it had wires that might have went to the amp.in the rear? Too bad I can't get the power antenna.
The installation as you show it is great, but will leave you with a unit that moves and rattles in the dash. It needs a rear support. In your installation kit is a triangular plate with slots that almost make a t. This mounts to the back of the radio and slides onto a track that is part of the car. When you slide the unit in it glides on this track like a kitchen drawer and the installation is as solid as factory.
Sony DSX-S210BTX Digital Media Receiver. It's pretty slick. No CD Player. It takes iPods, iPhones, usb storage, etc. We primarily use iPods in our cars.
I'm getting ready to do the same thing in my '02 Explorer. Where did you buy the wiring connectors and the dash adapter? I like the one you installed in yours.
You should never use a flathead screw driver to pry the trim of your dash off. A plastic pry tool or something flat and plastic that you can use as a pry tool is a better option. Looks like he nicked his vinyl dash. Not to mention, its easy to crack plastic trim with a metal screw driver.
In this particular case everything was ordered from Crutchfield. They have a great app on their website that helps you identify all the necessary bits for most modern cars. Alternatively any stereo shop/best buy carries the stuff in store.
Chace King If you order a stereo from Crutchfield it comes with all the needed accessories as well as step by step instructions. That would be your best bet to avoid headaches if you are new to this stuff.
I'm planning to put an aftermarket radio in my 2005 Ford explorer, and I'm am a little confused that one part. When you took out the factory 2002 Ford Explorer radio you took out or unplugged the antenna plug and two other harness plugs. But when you put the aftermarket radio in I see you only plug the antenna and one harness plug. What is the other harness plug for and is it important?
I attempted to install the aftermarket cd player that I had ran in my 2002 Ford Explorer in my nephew's 2002 Ford Explorer. My Explorer had the stock 6-disk changer and when I installed my aftermarket stereo, everything worked fine. In my nephew's Explorer (which didn't come stock with the 6-disk changer) when I attempted to install my old stereo, it wouldn't power up. I am assuming I need to run a fuse tap... any suggestions ???
I've got a 2000 Explorer. I know the previous owner did some messing with the stereo. I get FM just fine but the am has so much static and engine noise static that it is worthless unless the engine is off. Could the previous owner have failed to reconnect the antenna? Is there separate antenna connectors for am and fm reception ?
my 2000 has two screws that hold the bezel onto the dash, you put them in prior to putting the bezel on .. wonder if they differ from my car.. I don't think they do? same application holes, just different order ... weird..
so what of the second connection the one with 2 wires connected to it do you need to worry about that one? im curious because i too am installing a stereo like that on my 2002 ford explorer and its my first time installing a stereo in a car but i have all the needed items. also my stereo only has 1 connection slot
Ulysses Lopez how did that work out? I too am having a problem with installing. the harness I got is Scosche and the stock used all 3 connections but the new stereo uses only 1. any clues???
We had to get the transmission rebuilt at 150,000 miles. There were some issues with some transmissions early in the life of these cars, but we didn't have that sort of problem, our just wore out (the valve bodies if I remember correctly).
TheyMightBeRacing did you have any O/d lights problems. Because am currently going Thur that problem now where my light stays on even if I press the O/d button
My 2002 explorer's AC is doing something strange. It blows the AC out of all the vents/floor vents/defrost when I have the AC on. It does not matter if I have the setting on just floor vents or just defrost. Any idea whats wrong?
Not much to go on here. If it comes off easily when you try to take it off, then I wouldn't worry. If it falls off then I would take a serious look at how it mounts for broken snaps, etc.
My 2004 Explorer does it have a double din stereo or is it like he said its custom and how would I install a sub woofer and amp if it doesn't come with a premade sub enclosure
Best trick I've figured out is to stick a business card into the CD slot and then hit eject. It's generally the least destructive method. I learned a long time ago to not use CDs I wanted to keep in the car. Always use burned copies, or preferrably an MP3 player.

Get the proper panel tool, it has a V in the middle like a snakes tongue but, everything else is smooth and wide. Also you can take a plastic putty knife from the hardware store and insert that between your prying tool and the dash pad. Some of those fords can have some very strong clips. You might have better lucking pulling with your fingers in the air vents while you pry. That way you don't need nearly as much force prying. Do one side at a time.
You should be able to find them at any reputable stereo shop / big box electronic shop. I'm lazy and order my stuff through crutchfield (it can be a little more expensive). They make sure I get all the correct connectors for the equipment and the vehicle it is being installed in.
I have the same issue and was wondering the same thing. If anyone could answer that would be great. I hooked up my stock radio without the 2nd connector and it worked fine, but the radio wouldn't dim. I believe those wires allow you to dim the radio lights.
Jake Lofman I think its for an aftermarket sub woofer or amplifier. My aftermarket stereo worked fine after I installed it, even after leaving that 2nd connector unplugged.
Jake Lofman I just left it unplugged, If I sell the vehicle, I will just pull out my aftermarket stereo and put the stock stereo back in and re plug it in.
It should be basically the same process. Keep in mind that you cannot directly plug a new stereo system into the existing car's wiring harness. You need to create the aftermarket wiring harness (outlined in the previous video) to connect the new stereo to the existing wiring.
TheyMightBeRacing The aftermarket harness only supports the left connector from the stock radios. I want to know what you do with the right connector since the harness doesn't house both connectors. In the video above I saw that you just left it unplugged and tucked it away with all the other wires.
You damaged the dash by using a screw driver instead of a plastic tool for removing panels and then you tried taking the radio out without simply disconnecting the front plates 2 cords. Why not get that out of the way before trying to remove the radio?!
wait wait, waitwaitwaitwaitwait, was that Cities In Dust by Siouxsie and the Banshees at 13:11? Not so different strokes for different folks I suppose LOL
You say this is the correct way to wire a stereo but you made the wrong kind of solder for the car. You should use a western union style solder, its stronger and allows better current flow. Also, you want the solder to flow into the wire not to flow on top, you lose current the way you soldered. My way you keep the current and get better sound quality due to the simple solder. Sorry I am not trying to be mean just simple corrections to make the job better, other then that, everything else I thought was great.

Thanks this video was very helpful and now I feel very confident that's I can in my aftermarket radio . I'M EXCITED .....
Did it work?

The versions of the vehicles differ years dont matter as much as moddel with these 90% of xlt kits fits xlts same with edie and so forth
Good question. That info would be good to include in this video, as I believe the 2002-2003 Explorer may be unique to those years.
Which one is the video where you explain how to do the connector harness?

You're correct about the tool. I couldn't find mine when I went to install the stereo. And no, I didn't nick the dash, it was a temporary compression.
In this particular case everything was ordered from Crutchfield. They have a great app on their website that helps you identify all the necessary bits for most modern cars. Alternatively any stereo shop/best buy carries the stuff in store.
awesome man thank u, so much easier than my acura integra, had to unscrew the whole dash to get the radio out.

Does the 2002 explorer have a double or single din stereo

Did you ever have a transmission issues with your explorer?
No
I got a wire for dimmer+ and dimmer - is it necessary to use? Even with the radio powerd to battery
Good video man!! N good job explaining step by step....
what type of wiring harness did you order, I have a single din JVC and IDK what harness to get

I see videos of people putting a ground wire to the car frame. Is that the same as inside the harness?
There were 2 plugs on the stock radio, and only 1 plug on the new harness, does the other plug just stay disconnected?
What's the adapter? how can I get it
I'm curious also

if you still haven't figured it out it is a double din
What type of harness did you use to connect to the aftermarket stereo wires?
patrick dayton hrn10 for non amp or hrn62 for if factory amplified
can you share me how to install an after market radio antenna on a 2002 Ford explorer ?
i ordered a dash kit but it only came with the black plastic parts and not the metal mounting thing???? what gives?
I'll assume the metal mounting thing is the bracket that goes around the radio. That comes with the radio.
Does that stereo give the time lol?
I love how his wife or someone comes out at 5:22 XD
Excelente video
So an antenna adapter wasn't needed correct?
Will depend on the stereo you install. In most cases the antenna should plug right in to the back of the unit, they're pretty universal.
What do you guys recommend for cd's stuck in this same stereo?
Best trick I've figured out is to stick a business card into the CD slot and then hit eject. It's generally the least destructive method. I learned a long time ago to not use CDs I wanted to keep in the car. Always use burned copies, or preferrably an MP3 player.

How do you program the volume controls on the steering wheel to an aftermarket stereo in a 2002 Ford explorer Eddie Bauer edition
I wonder this too! Is it possible? Hope we can get an answer. :)
there is a separate module required for that
then what are the things on the wheel at 4:12?
does anybody know an aftermarket radio that you can put in a Ford Explorer 2001 without losing you're Center rear console controller
This particular vehicle did not have the steering wheel controls, so I didn't need to try and connect them.
what was that 2nd connector that you unplugged from your factory receiver???Mine had 2 wires coming off it, a grey one and a yellow one?? anyone???
I have the same issue and was wondering the same thing. If anyone could answer that would be great. I hooked up my stock radio without the 2nd connector and it worked fine, but the radio wouldn't dim. I believe those wires allow you to dim the radio lights.
Jake Lofman I think its for an aftermarket sub woofer or amplifier. My aftermarket stereo worked fine after I installed it, even after leaving that 2nd connector unplugged.
did you just leave the 2nd connector unplugged, or did cap it off in some way? thanks for the response btw, I appreciate it.
Jake Lofman I just left it unplugged, If I sell the vehicle, I will just pull out my aftermarket stereo and put the stock stereo back in and re plug it in.
+obxguy1 do you have the same subwoofer sound like the OEM?
Where did you get that radio from???
+Jalen Hemingway ordered it from Crutchfield.
+TheyMightBeRacing is it a website

how does it work on 2002 expedition my after market radio only has one thing out the back the factory had two connectors
