The idea of Johnny Knoxville doing a film inspired around the extremely dangerous Action Park seemed like a genuinely great idea for a film, kind of sad people don’t really remember it that much.
It also might depend on where you live as to IF the film even got advertised....I didn't even know that the movie existed until it popped up on Prime video or I rented it on PSN either one because I happened across the thumbnail and thought hmmm this looks interesting. Had no clue what it was until I watched it.
It was a match made in heaven
That's because it just wasn't that good of a movie. The idea was there, but the end product kind of felt like a sanitized version of Jackass with a lazy, maudlin plot attached to it.
The doc about the actual park was way better.

I heard a radio interview with Steve-O recently and he said that every time he talks with Johnny he's seriously analyzing the conversation in case there's a red flag for dementia. He said mainly because of all the concussions Johnny has suffered.

Well, they only hurt themselves superficially, it's hardly ever anything truly dangerous.
I went to Action Park about a dozen times when I was a kid. I was too scared to do anything. All the stories you've heard are true. It was a war zone. You'd see at least 20 people bleeding in front of you at any given time.

I never know how to feel when you find out stuff like this is true.
I was kinda cool because it's from that time when kids could have fun and get hurt and it was okay.
On the other hand of course Action Park was notorious because people really got hurt/died and there was were lawsuits because of the negligence/greed. Gotta take the good with the bad I guess.
I grew up in New York City and "Action Park" commercials would come on every 5 mins on tv. I always wanted to go, but we always ended up going to Six Flags Great Adventure instead. Looks like we made the right choice.

I've always felt so bad for Johnny Knoxville when it comes to this movie. Dude seemed to really have passion for the film and the concept, had the worst injury of his career making this and everyone just kinda brushed it off. I'm not saying people need to like it, but that's probably really gotta suck for him.
Paramount and the filmmakers let him down. They could have written and edited this movie so much better, then most importantly, paid for some real marketing. Z

Johnny Knoxville is a legit underrated actor. He can do drama. He needs to do a semi biographical movie about an old "stuntman" (I don't know what you call what he does. Yeah a daredevil but it's something different) who everyone loves but he's just lonely and wants more in life
Outside of Jackass, Grand Theft Parsons is my favorite role of his. If you haven't seen it definitely worth it if you like Knoxville

I was thinking about this the other day and I realized Jeff Tremaine already got his feet wet in biopics with The Dirt so now he’s actually perfect to direct a biopic on the Jackass crew. Every one of them has lived a rockstar lifestyle without being an asshole for the most part so I’d love to watch the story of everything that went on behind the scenes
It's really surprising that I'm the only person that thinks he's make the perfect joker. Especially in his age now
Imagine being Johnny Knoxville, literally busting your ass for this movie, just to have it flop. The physicality/brutality of this and the rest of Knoxville’s work is going to be studied in the future, just like Chaplin and Lloyd.
Kudos to you Joe for including Buster Keaton and Three Stooges clips where they are ACTUALLY getting hurt on-screen! In the clip at 7:22 of Buster hanging from the water tower, the force from the water pressure breaks his neck - and he ignores the pain as he runs out from beneath the water and finishes the scene. Then, at 7:58 the Stooges clip of Moe falling with the ladder, he breaks two ribs upon landing! And still completes the scene by getting up and double-slapping Larry and Curly... What a pro. Ouch!
And then what happened? When CUT was called, what happened? How long was recovery?

I did like him in Dukes of Hazzard. But I actually liked the movie and, grew up on the show. As opposed to those Dukes fanboys who crapped their diapers over it being a "comedy"...It wasn't amazing but it was entertaining.

I actually had a great time with this movie honestly. Knoxville is Eternal.
My wife and I watched this sometime last year after rewatching most of the Jackass catalogue, and we both loved it. I never realized that it bombed so hard financially. That's a huge shame because I would love to see more of this type of film in the future.
I had a theory that sometime in the mid 2000s Johnny Knoxville could have played the lead in an adaptation of Max Payne. he looked the part, was a stuntman so he could take a beating and he could act if needed be.

@@TheB00tyWarrior Speaking of what could have been, I kind of wonder if the Farrely brother's adaptation of The Three Stooges would have benefited from a stunt team like Jackass. The Stooges themselves were great but the movie was tame compared to the old stuff.
Also, for a LONG time, Johnny was attached to a Plastic Man movie. That would've been the perfect vehicle for his style of humor. Oh well.

@@HallErik16 YES, he was going to play Moe. But later on he turned the role down, since he refused to do an impersonation.
I actually really enjoyed this movie. The 70s vibe is extremely accomplished and is very appealing to the eyes and ears (music wise). The only problem I had was with the supporting characters. If they took out the grandpa stuff and had 20-30 more minutes of character building and scenes of camaraderie amongst the supporting and main characters, I think this would’ve been a damn good, enjoyable, fun, and heartfelt movie. Great video as always, keep it up.
Holy crap, I literally thought this was 10 years old or something. Man 2018 already feels like the "long ago." I had a fun time with this and yea, a bigger group of rowdy friends who all laugh at/with eachother would've helped a ton.
As a longtime Jackass fan I turned this off about twenty minutes in because of the reasons you laid out. Without the reactions or a quick recovery, all those injuries just hurt to watch.
I think the film would have worked a little better if Johnny’s character is a massive unrepentant irresponsible d-bag like Chuck Jones’ Daffy Jones where every mishap feels like Karma kicking him in the nuts for being a such d-bag.
I found out yesterday that Johnny Knoxville was offered a cast member position on SNL around the time he was selling Jackass.

I am one of the few who went to see this movie in theaters opening weekend and honestly I can be proud of it. I enjoyed the film! I really love Johnny Knoxville's acting style and I thought he performed great in this movie. Sad to hear it was such a disappointment to many other jackass fans.

I'm honestly worried for Knoxville as he gets older. Those TBIs are gonna catch up to him. I hope it doesn't ruin him.

I loved this movie and I'm glad people are finding it. The stunts were great and I'm surprised so many people slept on it.
You can tell it was supposed to have the Jackass crew in it. There are stand-ins for them that end up doing nothing.

The Defunctland doc on Action Point is my favorite one on youtube.
I saw so little marketing for this flick that I thought it was a one night Fathom event when I saw it in my theater's showtimes. Didn't even know Pontius was in it, I just thought it was Knoxville starring in a standard summer camp movie.
P.S. I love Knoxville in Bad Grandpa too, that movie was like a modern day raunchy remake of Chaplin's The Kid.

I'm neither a fan of Chevy Chase or the Vacation movies, but not casting Knoxville as Griswald was a missed opportunity. Seeing him here made me think of the first Vacation movie.

I remember watching Actionpoint when it came out, and I really enjoyed it. Knoxville is an incredibly underrated actor.
Johnny Knoxville actually started his career as an actor. He focused more on partying than getting roles and eventually washed out of Hollywood before he started doing the Jackass stuff. He's actually got a talent for acting. He just focuses more on getting hit in the nuts because it makes him money.
With ‘Action Point’ and now ‘Last Looks’, Tim Kirkby is becoming one of those directors who makes “bad” films that are actually decent and will find their fans.
He's a much better director in short-form comedy. Check out series 2 of Look Around You, it's probably one of the best things he's directed.

Knoxville is a legitimately great actor. Daltry Calhoun is a great example of this

“Great” is a reeeeal stretch. Like how everyone is a “genius” these days lol. He’s a decent actor that just passes the test.
Action Park (better known as "Traction Park) was everything you have heard it was. I have scars on my knuckles from the alpine slide. It's not "defunct", per se. It still exists as Mountain Creek Waterpark but it's a MUCH safer experience.
I'm surprised you didn't mention The Ringer. That movie has some of the best acting Knoxville ever put to film.
Great movie, but that needs to be a video of it's own, with the controversy surrounding the movie before it even got released based on the premise alone.
I kind of feel bad for Johnny Knoxville, I mean those several hard hits in the head don't help you to age well. Poor guy, I wish him the best for the future.

Without watching this video first I would say the single biggest reason behind the flop was there was zero marketing behind it. No one knew about it, no one saw it, no one talked about it. I’m a huge jackass fan and I never heard about this film until I came across it randomly on a streaming app.

I love the Forgotten Failures that are total cringefests but I value and cherish the ones like these that shine a light on productions with true heart that failed for no real fault of their own.
A former friend of mine once talked about how they went to a screening of this movie and how it was so bad they walked out about 30 minutes in.
I loved this film so much and it broke my heart that it flopped.
I went watched this in the theaters and thought it was pretty fun movie.
Johnny Knoxville is a surprisingly good actor. The Ringer is another film where he really gets to show off his acting chops. Hell, in The Ringer, he manages to hold his own opposite Brian fucking Cox!
4:35 “Seven Parks” of course being a thinly-veiled reference to amusement mega-corporation Six Flags, whose theme park Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ contributed greatly to Action Park’s ultimate demise.
I loved this movie! It was sad around the middle of nowhere in Wisconsin where I live, they didn't even release it in our theaters, I had no way of knowing this movie existed until it was on bluray

Grew up less then 20 minutes away from Action Park. Man what a fun place it was. I did some dumb things there lucky I was never hurt that bad.
I saw this in theaters actually. Had a great time, fun premise, and some of the most gut punching stunts I’ve seen. It’s a shame it didn’t sell enough seats.
They did market this movie poorly. I remember seeing a trailer and going "Ah, a Jackass like movie, but not Jackass. Pass"

Man, that 80's inspired poster was so good. The fact that Paramount just kind of got rid of it is mildly upsetting.
I literally just watched this movie for the first time with my boyfriend yesterday, we both enjoyed it.

I get the feeling that if it was more than just the 2 of them doing the stunts there might have been a longer runtime. Knoxville got hurt so bad with that catapult scene they probably had to shelve a bunch of scenes.

I just watched this movie about a week ago for the first time, and while I thought elements of the plot moved forward too quick or with no explanation (like Chris Pontius's love interest) there was something about the movie I really enjoyed.
Maybe it's just because I'm a huge mark for Jackass.

I survived many trips to Action Park as a child, and I got to bring a friend each time.
As a fan of defunct and little known theme parks I was curious about this but never got around to seeing it.
I personally loved Action Point, but I’ve been a Jackass fan since the beginning and have seen all of Knoxville’s movies.
I love and respect physical comedy in all it’s forms. I will always prefer it to “goofy man child/improv” found in most modern comedies.
I must be old, because I remember when Big Brother magazine was the forerunner of Jackass
I enjoyed the film. It actually looked like it was filmed in the 70's and Knoxville as ever was great in the role. Crazy stunts as expected, and lots of cool Punk songs.
It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it's a perfectly entertaining Saturday night film that goes with beer and pizza. I actually think it was meant to be this way.
The Behind the Bastards about Action Park is a great listen. Just mind-blowing.
This video really made me appreciate the work of Buster Keaton.
Never forget as a kid my brother one morning was all excited to head out to Action Park with some buds. Remember he comes home with his left forearm all road-rash'd up from the 'Alpine Slide' 😂
I actually really like this film, it's not perfect and it has issues but it is fun and does give this old school 80s vibe.

Bad Grandpa and action point were the bridgeway I could bring my parents into my youthfulness.
I'm go ahead and say marketing is a big part. I like Jackass and I didn't even know about this.
The opening shot of the movie with the bear was great with silence. The bear walked towards him, felt bad, and ignored him from there. I died laughing, but was not so impressed by the rest of it
Defunctland has an AWESOME short form documentary about Action Park too. As someone who grew up on the tail end of the "safety last" era, I've always love the lore of a place like this!
45 million dollar budget??? That explains why the film was so mis-marketed: it was only supposed to be a tax write off.
When I heard about this movie, I was a little intrigued as I had just learned about the Action Park story. And while I feel like I've kinda outgrown the Jackass humor, I do kinda respect them for taking their licks.
_Class Action Park_ is one of the best documentaries I have seen in quite a while. If you love real life Jackass, see it!
I think the fact it was made is all the success J.K. was looking for.
At the time I was really into abandoned places and businesses and when I saw the trailer I was more interested in the "Action Park" theme rather than the film itself.
The biggest question I had was how did this cost 45 million? did the insurance cost 40 million?
I dunno, I really did like this movie a lot. The real stunts really added to my enjoyment of what I thought was a fun story. I highly recommend it especially if you are a jackass fan.
Love your vids man, especially the genuine sincerity you bring. Too many TH-cam channels wallow in cynicism and you’re having none of that.

I’m a Action Point fan! I had a lot of fun with the movie, it’s really a sweet-hearted movie
The stories and inspiration for this movie is much more compelling than doing an 80s film premise of teens against a real estate developer with crass humor.
