Ha ha, yeah, but its a double edged comment. He is in a way putting them down, but he is also saying their "Negatives" is what makes them good at what they do. Their ego is the thing people take away from meeting most actors, and it can be annoying. But its that same ego that makes them good at their craft when they are good at it. As only a small time short film and commercial director, I can say, if you do not keep certain actors in check, they will try and steal the film from you and do EVERYTHING their way. That is why when a director finds an actors or actress they have good working chemistry with, they usually continue to work with them.
His eyes are incredibly warm and fun. Check after 3:22 when he says “....in the dark.” If you’re scared in the hours and days after the movie, his work is done. Fantastic!
I watched him film 'Vertigo' here in San Francisco in 1957. I had no idea what-so-ever who he was but I definitely knew who Jimmy Stewart was because of his westerns (Winchester 73, The Man From Laramie etc;) I was little kid and for some reason they let me wander around the set and talk to all the people (camera and lighting men, grips, etc;) it was so much fun
