The following is my opinion without watching the video, just wanted to share my thoughts because I’ve thought about it a lot. I think that power creep is not that bad in this game considering a couple factors. Firstly, I still see people saying when new leaders are announced stuff like “hey I think you should run this old card that hasn’t seen play in forever.” It’s very impressive to me that not only new or even newer cards are used, and not just with a couple powerful exceptions. New leaders will come out that make tons of old cards suddenly see use after they haven’t been in the meta. Bonney revived the Supernovas from the first starter pack. Lucci revived the cp9 cards that had potential in 03 but lacked a leader that let them shine. This makes the whole of the game feel very dynamic and a lot more balanced out. Second, the leaders used are not just new leaders. Blue Doflamingo is a big example of this. He very recently resurged after getting support from new cards, which I wouldn’t expect in a game with a big power creep problem. Enel is the 2nd or 3rd most prominent leader despite coming out back in 05. What this means is that even if they are now good because of new good cards, the leader ability is good enough to beat out new leaders. Last, though this seems like a simple thing, it’s big for me that the game isn’t in a state of win conditions. Many other TCGs (like MTG) will eventually have a combination of things that let you just super quickly win out the game. OP has a fundamental gameplay system that makes accidental win conditions easier to stop. I stayed away from seeing the “meta” until very recently because I didn’t want to see people talking about “play this leader with this deck and you can super quickly just kill them.” What I found instead was that just playing the game by putting some good cards under a leader that has a fitting effect can generally make you a good deck. There’s things like RP Law and Lucci that are meta for card removal potential, but a) people are talking about the meta soon shifting from removal to swarming, and b) that’s just because they set up good ways to remove characters, not facilitate a way for a couple key cards to wipe and give complete advantage. I overall think power creep has been very well managed apart from specific cards that are then usually banned. Rn I’m expecting please please please banning Black Maria because she’s making RP Law so obnoxious. Just banning Law wouldn’t be the worst either but he’s not that oppressive without her. Anyways, these are my thoughts. I can’t watch the video yet but I probably will. If so, I’ll come back and reply to this with any thoughts.
Absolutely right. Every deck in OP07 has something that your opponent doesn't like about it (Black vs Green or Green vs Yellow). Still it's the most fun I had playing since I started in 04.
I’m excited to play the game. I spent 50 recently buying like 150 commons and proxied off about 15 $5-$50 cards to see if I like the deck. I’m going to using these to build 3 decks I’m interested in to try out.
I still think they should’ve released sets based on arcs it would’ve got some people a lot more hyped like oh shiiii OP-09 is finally whole cake island arc is out the leaks say the leaders will be Katakuri Big Mom Bege Sanji And Pedro
I mean they've done the anniversary sets around the most hype efects. op1, op5, and op9 were all great sets for what they are. But I do get that the in-between sets are kinda mixed in terms of hyper and themeing. OP3 being a double up of whole cake and enies lobby is great, but then why throw in east blue stuff out of nowhere and then not support it. It could've been a much better set on it's own or with a different match up. Like IDK. Bandai is weird.
@@MonkeyFightTCG yeah and that’s what I mean like OP-09 is four emperors (which is amazing and a great way to celebrate 2 years) but then why is One Piece Odessy in that set? Just seems so weird to do that aren’t we celebrating the emperors? OP-08 is called “Two Legends” how is it that there’s no whitebeard leader or Rayleigh leader or even Gol D Roger. Just weird themes still love the game and love the series just seems like they were rushing to give us stuff because of the show and manga
I prefer the mix of theming, like the 4 emperors coming or kingdoms of intrigue. Random mixes like 08 are weird for sure. If we did arcs, we couldn’t have key things for color theming like Yellow starting with Big Mom because it deals with life. Also, what happens when every arc is done? I think this method of pack design works better to keep the tcg alive with different cool leaders.
As for whats next in bt-10 and beyond. They will probably do as bandai did in Dragonball and Digimon.. go through all of the arcs again but with a fresh new and powerful gimmick the next block of sets revolve around with legacy support sprinkled in
I appreciate this video, I know nothing about this tcg but am slightly interested because of the ip and company backing it (not some small indie dream) and I hope that this tcg doesn’t go down in flames. I’ve always been skeptical about tcgs that are not the big 3 . I’m sure the power creep will still happen but hopefully it gives enough flare to keep players interested
While I do think they rushed all the arcs and themes out. There is still a ton of potential to revisit them and give the different theme decks support, so they actually become playable. Like you said I think there is a lot of new mechanics they can add down the road. Plus the story is not finished yet so there is still new material. I honestly see Oda continuing the story past the "end" as well.
17:39 There is that devil fruit logo (botttom right of the card next to rarity) that nobodies knows what it is for... but is rumored to be used for set rotation in the future
@@starbound100you realize that 1) 100% of TCGs with set rotation also have at minimum 1 and usually several legacy/eternal formats and 2) rotation actually helps collections retain value and long term playability right?
Your channel helped get me into the OPTCG. I still have my gripes about the game after playing for a couple of months. My biggest one being that it feels like they don't want to give Blue any power at all. The multicolored leaders I think are to blame for this. They offer too much power in both their effects and their combinations. It ultimately dooms any powerful cards to be abused. That's why everyone wants effects to be limited to leaders in my opinion. I don't agree fully, but it HURTS to see a whole color suffer for the sins of a SINGLE leader.
Blue is in nami jail unfortunately. You can't give card draw or it makes a problematic deck better. Sakazuki is big, but only for blue black leaders. Blue isn't near as powerful in other color combinations such as marco, rosinate, or even queen. But it's done irrepable damage to how Bandai has to perceive future card design.
The Don deck is the most experimental part of the game, I would love to see some new mechanics focused around it but I am scared since it could break the fundamentals of the tcg.
You beat me to the punch! LOL I'm working on the same concept right now, but you made some really good points. Good work! Hopefully Bandai does something soon.
since you talked about bandai and one piece card game, can you make a video on the digimon one? just want to know what's your opinion. i like it, it's very satisfying to stack up evolutions imo
Yo, we're still missing the Little Garden set! Is it like a 6 character arc? Sure, but it's an arc!!! Also I'm surprised how conservative One Piece has been with new keywords. As in we haven't gotten a single new keyword past the launch set I'm pretty sure.
well with the manga and anime where they're at right now, i can see us getting dorry and brogy soon. And yeah no new keywords. Also very little keyword stacking on cards. set 1 secret rare yamato is still special.
@@MonkeyFightTCG We're also missing like "obvious" leaders. Like the rest of the straw hats for example. We took important steps with Chopper and Robin recently, but we're still missing Brook, Franky, Jinbei and even Ussop leaders.
My only complaint is you said Kaku was a dead card on release. That was pretty much the only card that let Rob Lucci stay semi-relevant in OP03 :( On a serious note though, yeah I think most of your points are valid, but if i'm honest I think the real issue is that the power creep is just very unequal. I think the game designers are learning what is actually good, because there are times where they really think an effect is going to be used differently. Great example, fire fist was clearly meant to pair with 7c ace for a 10 cost play. Rebecca was meant to grab out Kyros. Both examples show they just did not consider how else a card could be used or how don efficient a intended combo is.
I also feel like Bandai built 8 cost Gecko Moria around bringing back Oars and a cheap Thriller Bark chump from the trash to get Oars' effect off next turn.
There are a few with protections and attack gain based on types. I personally don't like it because it makes match ups way more luck based. Maybe with the dual typing that's shown up in a few cards it could get better. But idk
Long time collector of the game first time player last night. I come from the original Yu-Gi-Oh play style. This is new. 1. Leaders are cool, but can be INSANELY mismatched to just dominate another color. Example. There is nothing in the game currently to bump UP cost against black, decreasing cost. Or if im WB playing against carrot. I have NO red cards that can make my cards active again. I think the new starter decks will help this issue. But BRUH. Lol. But very fun though
The issue is that all of the best counters to black are within black. Ie sabo, structure deck luffy, and the new purple black luffy. The trick to beating carrot is to just drop more rush units or big units that don't care like whitebeard. Carrot is also inconsistent enough to just lose half of the time.
@@MonkeyFightTCG I get that. But there's no cards red cards that ramp don quicker. I'm stuck until turn 5 (if I go first - if not turn 6) to play Newgate, or shanks, or whoever that's high cost to combat the 7 cost or less effect from carrot. While on turn 3 the other player can have 2 of those out negating any attacks I may have set up already.
Believe it or not. Bandai is still hiding a lot of characters. Maybe because they are waiting for the anime to reveal them first. A lot of interesting powerful characters in One Piece are introduced and displayed some of their powers in the manga now. There are at least min 15 or 20 powerful characters which are not added in OPTCG yet and also some new power system. So, i think Bandai is just waiting for the anime.
Idk, the screenshots used in the .hack game look a lot more polished and overall better than the screenshots used in One Piece. Not only these from Odyssey, but the ones from the anime that they have been using since the beginning as well. .Hack handled them fine. Not ideal, but acceptable, especially for its time. But in One Piece they look cheap, ugly, and are in huge contrast to the cards using art specifically drawn for the game. No one else that I have talked to seemed to mind the screenshots though. I wonder what they will think of the ones form Odyssey.
Tbf, I showed the best of dot hack. Some of the anime screens hots are very bad. But Bandai did just use awful screenshots for odyssey. Like they make the game look terrible and are a disservice to what's probably a fun game. I had thought they moved past the screenshots of op1, but Bandai is going to Bandai lmao
Some points that maybe weren't entirely fleshed out. Since set 2 on red never had consistency issues. You could run 8-12 searchers and ways to replay some. It was a devastating advantage in the early games. And it ment the meta was way way less diverse from set 2-4. 2. Blue has been consistently bad. From first to last set blue has never really been the reason you run a deck. Like look back at the video and notice how it's never once been the top dog. Even when paired with black it's black that you run it for.
I’m curious what makes you think rotation would hurt the game. In my eyes, getting rid of older game pieces can only help designers come up with new and improved card design, even if it’s reminiscent of cards that have rotated out. And they already have block numbers on the cards, so I hope they go that direction. Pokemon and MTG have only benefited from rotation, allowing for a healthy meta, while players can use older cards in more unbalanced and more complicated gameplay. Yu-gi-oh however is forced to build itself around poor design from the past, conforming to what has come before, or banning, which rotation would have done anyway. Even tho I disagree on that point: Great Video, and I agree with a lot of what you said
Set rotation forces players to have to buy new cards and lose their old collections. For a game like one piece where the vast majority of players are casuals, this would result in a major barrier to playing the game. There's a reason so few card games survive set rotation outside of the big three. Minor design improvements mean very little when you have to tell little timmy he can't play the card game even though he has cards or you have to tell someone their max raritied deck is both worthless and can't be played. Pokemon gets away with set rotation because it's a collectors hobby first and a game second. MTG struggles with set rotation and the standard format as a whole. But it's mostly modern-day issues. Standard also can't function without alt formats which have slowly eaten away at mtg's paper presence. people prefer commander where anything goes over a set with rotation. Set rotation doesn't make sense for one piece especially due to the limited nature of the brand. We're rotating out land of wano, big mom pirates and CP9 just to bring back in land of wano, big mom pirates, and CP9. It doesn't work and would just be confusing. At least pokemon has games to tie themselves too. One Piece doesn't.
@@mission4871also to note that 1) set rotation has not really stopped powercreep, as more and more new broken keywords got introduced in magic, and Pokémon got bigger and bigger HP wise, power wise and ability wise anyway (I suggest looking at Jwittz video about Pokemon cards getting better and better, It is very well made) 2) Pokemon as mentioned is collectors first so they got away with it, but in Magic the standard format is really suffering, to the point that it is almost considered a dead format. By far the most popular format is Commander, wich is an eternal format. Rotation, in my opinion, doesn't solve any of the problems that a well curated banlist couldn't, and creates new ones. In fact, I think It Is kind of lazy, because instead of taking a look at the game and working to pinpoint answer the problematic cards, we blanket tell everyone to buy a new collection. Wich also brings us to the monetary problem. Immagine asking people to buy overpriced cards like katakuri or Borsalino, just for them to become unusable anyway not long after.
@MonkeyFightTCG but rotation (and banlists for that matter) are only relevant for competitive players. It's not like rotated cards spontaneously combust, nothing stops you playing with them casually.
i really shoul point out the fact that Bandai manage OP in a way that is not toxic but the market is brutal cuz the collection value of some cards and stamples. Im really pretty far into OP TCG i have a semi Build Hody Jones deck a good fun deck but im deep into Digimon TCG and the literal drift that is taking towards making all the game a constant push to weakers, new and old decks in every expansion and making the most healthy but sometime abuse Market that i have seen. U should really take a small insight in the Digimon TCG even if it is not the popular Choice is the type of TCGs where u have all the tools at hand to make a tier deck and constant support even if it wasnt aiming to your deck at all
Unfortunately, It has less to do with game design, and more to do with external factors like distribution, scalping and people sitting on sets expecting them to go to the moon. Thank God the reprints basically deterred a lot of these people away, and now you can sorta reliably find product for near the intended price.
Powercreep already in One Piece? This is Crazy. I mean i play Competetiv Yugioh. But Powercreep in Yugioh comes after 10 Years i think. One Piece is a NEW TCG and have Powercreep? Heavy :D
6:55 ngl Yugioh balance and powercreep are way more acceptable than whats happening in mtg. In basically all Eternal formats there is just a hidden rotation because the new modern horizons will always be way more powerful than the last one. So i dont think Magic is microbalanced and managed well in any way (even rotating formats).
@MonkeyFightTCG force of will yugioh magic duel masters,it's actually crazy how much they get away with stealing (bandai) meanwhile bss is original and keeps bleeding cause they suck at promotion
set 4 was the worst set imo locals were im from 905 katakuri and it was so broken compared to the rest xD im afraid op08 will be the same with rp law for western making me either forced to play it or hate playing locals untill something is banned or restricted i think op07 is fun tho alot can win ive seen
It is normal tho if a tcg goes over years where new sets have no impact in the game and the only good deck is kid from the first structure deck , game would die fast. It is expected that every set should kinda change the meta. Does that mean the game is balanced ? No black and yellow are way stronger but maybe with banns and restrictions can change the game so other cards and leaders get played more, or they can add more support to an archetype like the blue dofi from op01 and the leader gets to be meta
The 3 overlord shown just do the same thing just one better than the other (and is arguable) (They just restand themselves) for the first one it had to pay the cost in main phase and hope to hit a rearguard(it also got a buff and a debuff making it better as a rearguard rather than the vanguard ) the second one you'd pay the cost when hitting (if it is a vanguard) but you needed to discard a copy of himself for the last one: You needed to have at least 4 damage (close to lose) and a full field (wich you couldnt use if you wanted to use its ability) but the restand is a guaranteed one most of the other effects are restrictions and the same effect (+2k in power as the vanguard if the original overlord is in soul) just sayin the examples shown are kinda bad for what you wanted to say (also very outdated) In vanguard G and premium tho what you said is much more true (Cards and decks tended to get powercrept or buffed w/cards that did much more) however in the standard format things are way better: the "powercreep" feels more tecnical rather than straight up "stronger card" so the power level despite being almost if not already over 20 booster sets the "power" level has increased but not by that much
My point was that there were 3 cards that do the same thing each with more and better effects. Adding more and more text each time. Plus how the restand works is different each time. It's an easily understandable visual example of powercreep.
@@MonkeyFightTCG They added more text yeah but because of costs and conditions. Also, I'd argue that "powercreep" needs the card to be straight up better and while og overlord wasnt that good from the beginning, The end wasnt powercrept by Rebirth due to circumstances and also cuz the end had just better synergies and could use the board something rebirth couldnt. imo if you showed some strides from a single nation the point wuold've been made better Like if you showed root flare and ziegenburg: One just retires a column, the other while retiring just 1 has the ability to restand itself making it straight up better rather than "Its somewhat good if the opponent doesnt play Link joker AND plays into my 4 damage restriction"
Would it be better to just leader lock Maria and Moria? It wouldn’t horrendously nerf Lucci and leader locking Maria would make animal kingdom pirates better and not add anymore power to rp law. Or restrict the cards to 1 instead of outright banning them
You can get most meta decks for below $200 and you can get budget decks that are solid for less than $50. You can actually get product because Bandai has been reprinting it. If that's not enough they have a whole reprint set coming out alongside good starter decks that are direct lines to relevant decks. If you think the game is not accessible at this point, it's a skill issue.
22 value from 8c moria? doflamingo summoning 2 huge minions on turn 2 while keep being aggro and running removals for everything? no, thanks, Im done lol, but it was pretty funny back then, not saying it was 100% balanced, but it was funnier to play, lets c how much time bandai will take to ruin another of their card games lmao
This Video aged poorly really fast and there is something that bothers me and that is that it feels like you only watched at the japanese meta. Its insane how diverse the meta in the west compared to japan. The japanese community called Nami t3 in op07 and we Made it t1 in the west, and the Deck completly escalated after the law ban. I mean yamato went 9-0 in Paris, pudding got top Cut and i Had a Boa next to me at top Tables in round 10 and freaking RG law won Utrecht with Dofi reaching top 16 in 07. In America its mostly the same, not as extreme as in europe. Its still Not perfect but we in the West get much more Out of the Game Japan does due to the differences in the Major Event format. So you are bassicly understating the quality of the design, except Bonney, the deck is ass.

Reminder that you can also use the online fan made simulator to test out decks. It's where I test my decks first.
@@MonkeyFightTCG What’s it called? I’ve never heard of it.
Just opsim you can find it throught the big one piece discord or a Google search
Really fun video!
Always consistent quality in these videos! I would love to see a Magellan deck profile now that I rewatched your channel again!
I still think they should’ve released sets based on arcs it would’ve got some people a lot more hyped like oh shiiii OP-09 is finally whole cake island arc is out the leaks say the leaders will be
Katakuri
Big Mom
Bege
Sanji
And Pedro
That would have been exciting
I prefer the mix of theming, like the 4 emperors coming or kingdoms of intrigue. Random mixes like 08 are weird for sure. If we did arcs, we couldn’t have key things for color theming like Yellow starting with Big Mom because it deals with life. Also, what happens when every arc is done? I think this method of pack design works better to keep the tcg alive with different cool leaders.
@@josephmartin9737when every arc is done they can start mixing them and revisiting them… obviously…
Digimon set 9 was the tipping point in bad powercreep for bandai and really change the game, I'm glad this didn't happened at least yet in OP
I’ve never played the game but this video was fantastic. Great post-mortem on how a game develops. Excellent comparisons to other games. Good stuff.
The game isn’t dead
Wow I like how those ppl in this video don't used card sleeves for there AA cards 😢
official bandai advertising lmao
Inuyasha(tm), Wearing a Hat, really is peak card design. Even benefits from Cute, Modern Females!
Bandai doesn't do set rotation. I also don't get why people want their collection to be invalidated.
@@starbound100 Do you have any idea what's the purpose of that logo then ? Just categorizing ?

Tribe locking special Don could be cool and you could make them once per game abilities like Pokémon does with ace spec cards and vstar powers.
You beat me to the punch! LOL
I'm working on the same concept right now, but you made some really good points. Good work! Hopefully Bandai does something soon.
Oh I thought he was gonna talk about conquerors haki coating or some shit but yea even bounty rush has insane power creep
since you talked about bandai and one piece card game, can you make a video on the digimon one? just want to know what's your opinion. i like it, it's very satisfying to stack up evolutions imo
That was pretty much the only card that let Rob Lucci stay semi-relevant in OP03 :(
On a serious note though, yeah I think most of your points are valid, but if i'm honest I think the real issue is that the power creep is just very unequal.
I agree, calling Kaku dead on release is pretty crazy, seeing as Lucci and Katakuri still topped events. They weren’t bad/no-show decks by any means.
They should do something with the attributes on each card. I believe only Buggy mentions the attribute of Slash
There are a few with protections and attack gain based on types.
I personally don't like it because it makes match ups way more luck based. Maybe with the dual typing that's shown up in a few cards it could get better. But idk
Could this kinda vid be done for Lorcana? 😮
maybe, but not by me. Lorcana needs someone who actually knows the game for that type of video
I genuinely thought this was for the anime XD
They could always start making cards based on stuff from the anime's filler arcs.
They already are

YGO players: Haha first time
Believe it or not.
Hope Koby gets new Cards.
Just make more one piece content, it's all banger
Some points that maybe weren't entirely fleshed out. Since set 2 on red never had consistency issues. You could run 8-12 searchers and ways to replay some. It was a devastating advantage in the early games. And it ment the meta was way way less diverse from set 2-4.
2. Blue has been consistently bad. From first to last set blue has never really been the reason you run a deck. Like look back at the video and notice how it's never once been the top dog. Even when paired with black it's black that you run it for.
I’m just in it for the art. In that sense the special alt arts look the best? Or is there better/ more rarer
I would like cards of the Seraphim Clones
Yugioh imo has become awful. It’s a game where you watch your opponent do 65 things in one turn for 20 min and then you lose
15:54 Everything? lol we still need Gorosei/Five Elders, Holy Knights, Roger Pirates, Giants
@@MonkeyFightTCGsome good points. Thanks for the reply
@@mission4871also to note that
1) set rotation has not really stopped powercreep, as more and more new broken keywords got introduced in magic, and Pokémon got bigger and bigger HP wise, power wise and ability wise anyway (I suggest looking at Jwittz video about Pokemon cards getting better and better, It is very well made)
2) Pokemon as mentioned is collectors first so they got away with it, but in Magic the standard format is really suffering, to the point that it is almost considered a dead format.
Heavy :D
Most tcgs have bad powercreep by set 2. So honestly one piece is doing very well in managing itself.
Just want to point out R/G Law is still winning regionals in OP 7.
i dont understand why bandai doesnt put sideboard in one piece..
I do like this game but it has been a real struggle to keep up with it because of the insane power creep and unbalanced nature of it 😢
I thought this was about the anime and got disappointed slightly, but I love tcgs so I don't mind as much

Babe wake up. MonkeyFight TCG dropped another OPTCG video.
The 3 overlord shown just do the same thing just one better than the other (and is arguable) (They just restand themselves)
for the first one it had to pay the cost in main phase and hope to hit a rearguard(it also got a buff and a debuff making it better as a rearguard rather than the vanguard )
the second one you'd pay the cost when hitting (if it is a vanguard) but you needed to discard a copy of himself
for the last one: You needed to have at least 4 damage (close to lose) and a full field (wich you couldnt use if you wanted to use its ability) but the restand is a guaranteed one
most of the other effects are restrictions and the same effect (+2k in power as the vanguard if the original overlord is in soul)
just sayin the examples shown are kinda bad for what you wanted to say
(also very outdated)
In vanguard G and premium tho what you said is much more true (Cards and decks tended to get powercrept or buffed w/cards that did much more)
however in the standard format things are way better: the "powercreep" feels more tecnical rather than straight up "stronger card" so the power level despite being almost if not already over 20 booster sets the "power" level has increased but not by that much
My point was that there were 3 cards that do the same thing each with more and better effects. Adding more and more text each time. Plus how the restand works is different each time. It's an easily understandable visual example of powercreep.
@@MonkeyFightTCG They added more text yeah but because of costs and conditions.
Also, I'd argue that "powercreep" needs the card to be straight up better and while og overlord wasnt that good from the beginning, The end wasnt powercrept by Rebirth due to circumstances and also cuz the end had just better synergies and could use the board something rebirth couldnt.
imo if you showed some strides from a single nation the point wuold've been made better
Like if you showed root flare and ziegenburg: One just retires a column, the other while retiring just 1 has the ability to restand itself making it straight up better rather than
"Its somewhat good if the opponent doesnt play Link joker AND plays into my 4 damage restriction"
I absolutely detest the OPTCG. You made this entertaining tho!
They need to ban black maria and law asap. Seriously. And gecko moria 8c. It's waayyyy to toxic. I hate 3 deck metas
Would it be better to just leader lock Maria and Moria? It wouldn’t horrendously nerf Lucci and leader locking Maria would make animal kingdom pirates better and not add anymore power to rp law. Or restrict the cards to 1 instead of outright banning them
Accessible 😂
I dont think you understood the video
14:10 they buff all decks so you are forced to constantly buy new cards even your deck still is shittier
