...yeah, aint it? I think they used a Fender Rhodes on the record. Sounds like it. Donald likes those above other electric pianos because the highs don’t go flat and the lows don’t go sharp.
Hey I know this is six years later but the TH-cam algorithms finally got round to showing this video to me. So I’m sitting here in Scotland at 01:27am learning this song. Appreciate you posting.
Wow ... absolutely. So calm, so right, so in-tune, so completely in the pocket. And just the right speed and right amount of information and commentary to make this insanely complex and beautiful piece accessible to mere mortals. I'd also be curious to hear an analysis of the composition - which key you consider to be the home key and any other insights as to how Fagin's eclectic jazz and pop infuences came together to produce something so original and sublime.
Yea..this was absolute "Devine Providence" to locate this angel of an amazing earth being ive ever known..and this second only to Sir Lyle Mays..my absolute favorite keyboardist on earth!!
I play by ear and I learned this song years ago off the recording, or so I thought. This was before online tutorials were available. Your lesson has shown me just how incorrectly I've been playing it. Thank you.
You have a remarkable ear for inner voicing. Always loved this song with it's rich harmonic movement. Thank you soooo much for making this possible to play.
Absolutely addicted, perfect as I can hear it. The Rodes vibrato and the sound is just so well suited to this song, it's almost like they are made to go together. Hypnotic.
I'm revisiting this after quite a while, and as always am very impressed with your attention to detail. This is truly one of the best instructional videos ever. Keep up the good work!
I loved this tutorial...particularly as it features a great song from my all time favourite Steely Dan album 'Gaucho. I think it is the electric piano throughout the entire album that is it's biggest attraction, along of course with it's beautiful backing harmonies. I once visited a hi-fi sales show in a London hotel where they were showing off some new advanced stereo hi-fi's. I walked into a room of about 20 sitting onlookers when all of a sudden Steely Dan's Gaoucho came on from the sound system on the stage. I thought I had died and gone to Heaven. Gaoucho is my all time favourite. And this tutorial from Gaoucho was truly wonderful.
I love the chords that you played at the beginning of the video (starting at 00:36). Those chords are from Jeff Lorber's "He Had A Hat". That would be a great song for a tutorial. From the ease at which you played that intro, you may already perform the song with a band. I'm a big Jeff Lorber fan so He Had A Hat gets a big "thumbs up" from me.
I just sat down and learned the intro with my keyboard set to electric piano and damn if I don't sound like Steely Dan playing a song I've loved for 40+ years. Wow. Can I hope that you will make more videos in the future?
Thanks for sharing your perceptive interpretation of this tune, and making it accessible to us mere mortals. You've taken away some of the mystery but kept all the magic. 10/10
Mate, you're a genius! Those chords are gorgeous, especially that Eb9(add13).. 'to the SEA'. I worked out most of the other tracks on the album, but I didn't even bother trying with this one because I thought WTF, it's too hard; beyond my abilities, anyway. Thanks for that, it's been an enigma for many years!
Great video! Honestly, one of the best I've watched online. Fagen's chords are haunting and beautiful. Very nice job and quite a discerning ear to pick those voicings out! Hope to hear you post more Steely Dan!
This song kicked off my love for jazz, and this very tutorial got me back into playing piano. A year later, I am still working on it. THANK YOU!!!!!! If you started selling tutorials, I would pay. Please keep spreading the joy of music.
It's as if you actually want someone to learn what you're doing with the green highlighted keys on top,and slow easy explanation of fingerings and degrees of the chord amazing
That was SO great ! I'm an absolute beginner on keyboards (but an old jazz-rock guitar player). In love with Rhodes and Wurli sounds from the beginning, I DO thank you for the knowledge you provide. Thanks again !
You Sir are a blessing in disguise. I am a bass player & this is just what the Doctor ordered. Not to mention I'm a big Steely Dan fan. A no brainer, I subscribed. Excellent Teacher as well. Thank You! 🎼🎼🎵🎵
You sir, are an absolute BADASS!!! You make Fagen chords look so easy. I am simultaneously jealous and blown away. Very nice. I fully intend to learn this song. Thank you for a great tutorial. I have subscribed.
This is a remarkable piece of work/instruction. Your ear is simply amazing. I am a guitarist and keyboard player with a solid music theory background but quite a weak keyboard left hand. Your explanations about the chord voicings and the (for me) easy to play left hand has brought this great tune to life again. I think I might even be able to play it! I cannot think you enough for these postings. David
I have spent 10 weeks learning Steely Dan's Babylon Sisters using your exact fingering and it has been well worth the wait for my muscle memory to finally kick in. If I had tried to learn this by ear, I would definitely have lost some key frequencies. Would you, could you do the same for me for Green Earrings, if you know how to play it? I cannot find a good enough clip to crib from currently on TH-cam. Thank you so very much for your excellent efforts!
Is this guy for real? Teleports you straight back to 35 years ago. Expertly analyzed and then casually brought right back to life. If things look this easy, it is always the hallmark of true mastery. Cheers, Kino! - Imagine what they had to do back then to even come close to this kind of sound quality. Eat your heart out, Donald ;-)
Thank you so much for the way you do your tutorials, they are just right for me. The chord progressions in Babylon Sisters have always delighted me ever since I first heard them way back in the day. The way you give time to properly clock them and then demo them in context with the melody is perfect for me (I’m getting on in years now and it takes me longer to get new things into my muscle memory). Thank you thank you thank you. I will be following your channel from now on for sure.
@@pianoworkout I'm glad you replied, because I had gone through my subscriptions a while back to trim them down a bit (I had LOTS of them. Too many to deal with really). I've resubscribed to your channel. You have some great videos that I eventually want to spend some time with. Right now I'm working on some of my own ideas. Anyway, now I know to keep this subscription. So, thanks.
You're awesome man. What a keen ear you have! Thank you for this *correct* version! The way voices move in the colorful Donald Fagen universe is so beautiful and interesting that this makes a fine solo piano soft jazz piece just as it is.
Insane tutorial. I've never been satisfied with chord charts for this tune because, as you so astutely pointed out, many chord voicings are omitted. It's a trip how this tune sounds groovy with all of the harmonic intricacies, the quintessential Donald Fagan sound. I'd love to see you do more Dan, in particular, Deacon Blues and On The Dunes.
Thanks! Chord charts almost never do justice to how a song was really played, true. That’s why it’s so important to practice listening skills. BTW; those two tunes are two of my favorites!
@@pianoworkout I can already play Deacon Blues really well but I'd be interested in how you spell the chords.. Like the C aug over D... Is that D #11? On The Dunes is just haunting and beautiful in a melancholy way and I don't have the ear to figure that one out.
I’m not listening to Deacon Blues at the moment but a C aug / D is always a D#11, or D9#11 if you will. Because the c in that chord makes it a dom7 chord, even when there’s no f#. It’s suggested anyway.
Yeah, man, nice job.. I’ve got the original Gaucho sketch book and learned it via that but your spaced-out (literally) voicings are, I think, closer to the record. I always thought that it sounded more spaced and spare than what I was reading. Kudos, brother, nice job!
Your touch, and your Rhodes are both just so dreamy! Liquid Soul there baby! Thanks for bringing a better understanding of this musical masterpiece to the masses! Btw, you've got a new sub! ME!!! 😎
Great work! I'd been trying to decode some of these chords for years and this solved many a riddle. One thing I heard differently was the E9 chord at 4:10 sounds like it's got a b5 in it, which avoids a conflict with the melody. But bravo!
You mean the E9 chord at “the end of a perfect day”? I don’t hear a B flat in that chord, plus Fagen sings the B flat anyway. In the recording I now hear G#-D over E (basically 3 and 7), resolving to G-C-D over E flat (3, 6, 7). The G#-D-F# over E that I play in the tutorial is not wrong though, sounds fine - and Donaldish - to my ears. Sometimes when we try to figure out especially chords by listening repeatedly our ears get tricked by overtones in the arrangement. I might have had that when I checked out Babylon Sisters, sorry for that

You're very welcome!
it's the first time I've seen a piano tutorial done so well and that has something to teach experienced pianists. Perfect. Compliments
Good Lord .. I never realize how much the electric piano pretty much anchored this whole song.. Sounds so Beautiful!

SPLENDID ! You took the core of the song out of its shell and however, it sounds more rich !
