  • Research of the TFD group focuses on thermoacoustic combustion instabilities. This type of self-excited instability impairs the security and reliability of gas turbines and rocket motors as well as domestic or industrial burners. In order to analyse and control thermoacoustic instabilities, fluid mechanics, acoustics and combustion science are combined in an interdisciplinary approach with methods of system identification and control theory.
    This video introduces the basic physics of the phenomenon and illustrates the us of tools such as LES, System Identification and Low-Order Modelling. The paradoxical mechanism of "intrinsic thermoacoustic feedback" is very briefly described, and outlook to thermoacoustic devices is given.
