As Ken Hilson pointed out, on the 28, 31 and 33 series Intek engines, the ACR should open the intake valve and not the exhaust valve. This is because the ACR mechanism is located nearest the gear, and the gear is nearest the sump (at the bottom of the engine). The only thing that changes on these engines is the location of the intake and exhaust valve. Some have the exhaust valve on top (as shown on this engine) while other Intek engines position the exhaust valve on the bottom, with the intake valve located up top. However, as shown in the video, when I rotated the engine around, neither valve bumped open. This means that the ACR mechanism is in fact broken. Also, the majority of engines that have ACR's bump the exhaust valve open, as to not force compression through the intake. Regardless of which valve is bumped opened, the system functions the same. It releases a small amount of compression during starting, to make cranking over the engine easier.
I went crazy one summer thinking it was the compression release. Turns out it was the battery terminals that were dirty and needed sanding. That and me who would forget leaving the key on. Great video.

Excellent video, I just installed an aftermarket cam on a Craftsman YT3000 with a similar Briggs engine. Had no choice due to the Briggs cam was back ordered until winter. Knock on wood, I hope it holds up for the customer. Had one on a snowblower also. Thanks for that video, Well Done.
What's crazy is this particular engine fires right up if you just rotate the engine past TDC on the compression stroke. But, it does put more stress on the engine. Sooner or later somethings gotta give. I told my customer to sell it.
I’ve learned my about Briggs & Stratton engines and their compression relief cam. My Husqvarna riding mower has not been seen for two months. It has been in the shop(s) for that long due to living on DelMarVa using small engine repair folks.
I Have the issue with not having enough amps to turn it over. Rotating the fly will worked. Is there a way to fix this issue. I went looking for ACR and could not find that anywhere. Love these video's of diagnosing issue.
Can you do anything to fix the reverse? I have a 46 inch 20 hp Husqvarna and the reverse is almost gone. I was going to pull it apart to see if I could service the transmission.
Do you have any videos of replacing throttle cable or throttle adjustment. I took my carburetor assembly off to clean it, put everything back together and now my throttle cable doesn’t work. I have high rpm only. I can not tell by the online diagrams how it’s supposed to be.

Nice well explained video too bad this happened so soon but likely a big box store riding mower. Big difference on what you get from the dealer and the big box stores. My father always told me you can pay me now or you can pay me later. Big box equipment covers that on both ends, dealers prices may be higher but so is the quality of the equipment.
Yes definitely, with a cheaper engine that has broken parts after 3-4yrs and also a transmission that is made of plastic and will give all sorts of issues in the future. I always recommend going to a dealer.
Excellent video. I guessing that this unit was purchased at a big box store rather than a authorized Husqvarna dealer. Thus the plastic hydrostatic unit or transaxle unit. Big box stores mowers are not worth saving a few hundred dollars. If you ever get tired of turning wrenches, you would be a great instructor at a trade school or vocational school.

$2000 Canadian, and yes most machines at dealers are built with higher quality parts, therefore more expensive. but you spend a little more now, save a lot more later. Less cost for maintenance/repair. I recommend Cub Cadet and John Deere riding mowers with Kawasaki engines. Push or self propelled mowers with Honda engines. Briggs and Kohler aren't the same as they used to be!
Few things… 1) Battery load test appeared to not be weak. If that battery’s cca is @430 your load test showed @400. The stair step in the “weak” is where the load test reading reads. Not just weak. 2) a quick way to load test entire start system up to starter is unhook starter wire, and clamp positive lead to + load tester lead and ground to engine block. Activate start switch and load tester. If noticeably lower than direct load on battery terminals then proceed to isolate components. 3) acr…you got that figured out with Ken.
Keep in mind this was filmed after charging the battery for a couple hours. We left it on for a little over 24hrs after and the battery tested fine. I'll have to try that load test through the engine block, I usually just use the volt meter to test for voltage drop and also amps. If voltage remains constant, and resistance is increased, Amps decrease. That's why I removed the solenoid to test, but at 150ohms I figured it wasn't the issue. My customers also have a tendency of holding the key switch on much longer than they should when an engine doesn't start. As for the ACR, I definitely got mixed up on that one. Thanks for watching!
Stihl ride on 4years old and a lot of issues. Tappets, ignition solenoid, electronic circuit board failure and I accidentally reversed poles on battery and there is no engine cranking on ignition turn. Where should I start testing?
You can easily start your engine even with acr broken, just cover your intake and once it gets a good angine crack, uncover it. It's not a fix but it will do until you fix the issue or just run it till it quits 😃. Thanks youtube
I’m having the same problem. It’s winter here went to start it and had to charge battery and use a jumper to turn over. My question is can a compression release be installed instead of replacing cam. Is there room in the head?
Just watched your video on the Husqvarna that wont start, which is very informative. Is this only apply to the Briggs engine? I have the Kawasaki engine in my Husqvarna that is just 3 years old. It started to do some funky things.
Had a customers do that and it revved wide open but the guy cutting the grass did not notice cause he had on the ear phones listening to music cranked right up and eventually broke the connecting rods

Probably around $600 here in Canada because you have to factor in pickup and delivery charge, my time spent diagnosing, then the labor for repair (minimum 4hrs) for removal of engine, disassembling, installation of parts, reassembling engine, reinstalling engine. Then parts (cam, sump gasket and main seal). It's not exactly cheap, which is why I don't have too many videos tearing into engines, people don't want to spend the money. It's a lot cheaper in the states, parts and labour.

Is it the wiring system problem if the battery indicator always red in colour meaning low or almost empty battery? I assume that the battery did not charged. Now I am so confused if my lawn mower has ACR problem that make it very hard to start. I always use jumper to start it.
If you are jump starting a riding mower using your vehicle battery and jumper cables DO NOT have the engine running you may destroy the rider wiring system or blow the fuse because you will be providing too many amps with the engine running. If your mower battery is showing low voltage you will need an ohm meter to check to see if your magneto is recharging your battery when you have the mower running.
My friends 50cc chinese made 4 wheeler has new battery and starter. I have to push the start button 3 times before it turns engine over. It clicks on the first two presses and turns engine over on the third. Other problem is that I cleaned carb out but it only runs for 2 seconds on carb spray when we spray into air filter
Damn my 3yr old mower have the same problem, damn acr is a stupid system . Should be a fix for that like the one they use on 2 stroke engine which is just a little button..
They were 0.004" intake and 0.006" exhaust, both acceptable readings. Also, I mentioned you in a pinned comment, you are correct about the location of the intake and exhaust valve on this engine.
I messed up the part with the compression relief though on this video, the exhaust valve on this one doesn't open, it's actually the intake valve. Most open the exhaust, these inteks are terrible lol

This is unfortunately a hard lesson on buying these low level box store tractors. You’re not saving any money when it only lasted 3 years and you’re buying another one. Spend a little more money and buy from a dealer. Now it’s off to the junkyard with a Breaks n’ Scrap ‘em’ sticker on it.
The quality of these machines are so bad these days . $ 2000 mower only lasts 3 years that's sad . Some one from north America should get the rights to bring the parts of these engines into the country so we can fix these POS . The market is only going to grow so someone would get rich quickly .
Yea and the unfortunate thing is they cost as much to fix as replacing the entire unit lol like imagine a $1500 transmission and probably $500 to replace the cam, when you can buy another one for $2000 or like the Yardworks lawnmower needing a battery and charger and it costing almost as much as a replacement mower without all that electric crap. I used an aftermarket camshaft assembly to repair my Intek 21 ACR at 400 hours. I've put 300 hours on it since, with no problems.

No, it's internal to the cam mechanism, and if you replace the (likely backordered cam) from Briggs, using OEM parts, it'll likely fail again anyway.

when acr breaks there are loose parts flying around inside. in my neighbour's case it damaged the governor/slinger and it over reved.
Yea no doubt, this one likely either settled to the bottom, or the spring broke and it simple won't return

I'm assuming you checked intake clearance on the intake. too wide and acr fails to operate.

Yeah that sucks. My Craftsman turned 14 years old this year. Had to replace the idle pulley bracket this spring. Not that hard to do.
