Omggg thank God for Tim Slate!! I am a newbie to ID and you saved my life and time by creating this 11min video explaining action mapping. I am excited about creating courses using this and my upcoming interviews! Bless you!
Much better explination from what i’ve found on other channels. I played your video back at 1.75x’s the playback speed and was still able to fully understand each step. Big THANKS!
Hi Tim, I just came across your channel and wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the clarity and common sense you bring to the subject of ID. I'm new to the field but have worked with Instructional Designers as an SME. While tryinv to improve my courses I've started to learn about ID, learning about ADDIE and SAM took a lot of the fun and excitement away. But your channel gives me clear common sense tools to improve my teaching and brings back the excitement! Thank you!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! If you'd like to see a more real-world example of an action map, I'd suggest watching this How-To Workshop: th-cam.com/video/ey_rkOERSXk/w-d-xo.html
Love the video Tim. One of the best descriptions of Action Mapping I've seen. Will definitely recommend to people new to the field (and some not is new 😉)
This is fascinating. I followed this process years ago when creating training for student Staff at a university. I didn't even know it had a name. I found this process very helpful and am eager to learn more about it.
This is great information and is presented in a really well-organized way! I'm an ID who has worked in the education system (k-12 and higher ed) but is now switching to working with companies. Your content has been extremely helpful in getting me organized and up-to-date on current best practices. Thanks!
A very interesting video. Whilst I have never heard of this model, I have found myself accidentally using it, but probably not as effectively as it would have been if I had used this Action Plan. The outcome of watching this video is that there are some courses that I need to redo. Thanks for the great video.
Thanks again for watching and commenting! If you’re interested, here’s my deep-dive article into action mapping, along with an example and template: community.elearningacademy.io/c/knowledge-base/how-to-create-an-action-map-instructional-design
Great explanation and in 11 min! Yes, Backward Design! IMO Backward Design is typically focused on KSA with Knowledge and Attitude often taken precedence. Action mapping is backward design focused just on "S" i.e. skills/behavior and placed within a corporate context.
I’ve read some of Map It, and I’ve seen many others explain the process, but I learn something new every time. Thanks for sharing your take on the action map process, Tim.
As always, nicely explained it Tim! Usually, at work, we create this map on Excel sheet as a common practice 🌸 Action mapping can help us plan any other activity too, as it is a very systematic approach 🎉
Hi Tim thank you for explaining the process from your experience. I was watching and putting my own ideas on Miro. Very practical video actually, thanks
Thanks Tim, brilliant video. Will definitely be trawling through your channel. I'm looking to make the switch from long-term online PD provider for teachers to ID/L&D consultant in corporate. (I have a bit of catching up to do!) Question: What is your recco for ideal software in which to build branching scenarios?
Thanks for watching. My recommendation would be Articulate Storyline. It's by far the most commonly used tool in our industry for branching scenarios and other types of eLearning.
Hi Tim! I will start implementing this process. Thanks for your explanation. Quick question. Is the eLearning Designer's academy in Slack, or do I need to join using the link pinned?
Thanks, Kim! The link pinned in the comments to join our online community, which is not in Slack...but is similar. Feel free to check it out. As for the academy (which is my 8-week online course program for eLearning designers), you can learn about that here: elearningacademy.io/academy/
This was great, thank you. Question though: Why are steps 3 and 4 not switched? Why wouldn’t we identify the information they need to know then create the learning? Thank you!
Great question. Always remember, it's not about knowledge first...it's about what people need to do first. Knowledge and behavior aren't mutually exclusive. So, rather than focusing on what information we need to pump into our learner's minds...we need to focus on what we need them to do, and work backwards from there.
It honestly depends on the complexity of what you’re creating an action map for. It could take a few hours, or multiple days / working sessions with your SMEs.

Actually working on a project where we are trying to apply action-mapping to our process. Thank you for the video, it is very clear.

Very well explained, Tim. I liked the way your videos converge to the questions you start in the beginning.
Thanks, Rozina! I appreciate it!
I'm learning so much from your videos! Thank you!
I really appreciate that! Thanks, Nena!
Tim, this is such a simple and elegant process for designing training! I am going to implement this right away! Thank you for sharing!
