    My uncle worked there for decades . They made dog food. We always got free Gaines Burgers for our Dachshund. This was in the 60's and 70's.Thanks for the memories.

      What was your dads name? I knew a Norman Savoie who lived in that area. He was the Union President in the plant in the late 60's.

    I was in Kankakee last week. I saw this building when I was there, but due to a very intense lightening storm and heavy security around the building; I was unable to explore it. Thanks for the vid. it looks like a really cool and epic place to explore.

    I just watched a video about an old food product that was made here! I grew up about 20 minutes away in Braidwood, so it absolutely shocked me to hear "manufactured in Kankakee, Illinois". The video I watched was a can opening video with cans from the '50s and '60s. Apparently they canned "bakers Angel flake coconut" here at some point? I'm reading through the comments and it seems like it was mostly burgers and dog food, so I'm wondering if I'm incorrect. If anyone has any information, please let me know!

    General Foods was the name of the plant, not General Mills. Please make that correction.

    General Foods plant; Dad worked the 3-11 shift as a Process Helper, making the dog food and Gaines Burgers. Often came home and got a phone call to come back and work a double, which he never turned down. No choice with a wife and 6 kids!

    This factory closing destroyed the whole town

    • @halvickery
      @halvickery 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The closing of both Roper plants, Kroehler furniture, A.O. Smith, and Gould Battery put a lot more people on unemployment than this plant's closing.

      My grandfather worked at General Foods. I moved away from that area because of lack of jobs and no real recreational things to do. Now I live 30 minutes from the Shawnee ad housing is affordable here.
