Smell the Fight!
I was an early Image zombie and bought everything, even the stuff I barely liked. This book and Boof and the Bruise Crew finally broke me haha.
Lol I doubt you were the first to falter in the face of Boof and the Bruise Crew.
Pure early 90s movie potential here. I can see Lou Diamond Phillips riding up on that Indian motorcycle wearing those mirrored glasses.
Good call. Fresh off his performance in Metal Tornado!
The more I go back and look at books like this, the more embarrassed I am that 16-year-old me wrote them off as "lame".
Lol You and me both, bud.
Grell also had a popular run in the 80's with a series called Jon Sable: Freelance. It was printed by First Comics. It was creator owned and they did an awful television series based on it.
I was aware of the comic, though I've never read it. Never heard of the show, though, don't think I feel the need to look into that one.
@@teambloodforce Avoid the show at all costs. The comics have nice artwork but I'm not sure how the stories hold-up. By early 80's standards the books were not bad.
Ironically, it looked more like a Valiant book than an Image book.
First Comics book.
I would even disagree with that, it looks too good for Valiant.
@@teambloodforce 🤣🤣
I remember I started collecting Shaman's Tears when I saw it on an issue of Inside Image
I have a copy of Inside Image, I think it's the same copy I got 30 years ago, I don't think I've ever read it. So you're a better man than me.
I got everything that first year or so of Image. I was in my teens and books like this got me to start searching for more comics like this and away from the standard Image comics. More indie books. More classically illustrated comics.
08:40 bingo, Image fans were Marvel readers that followed their favorite artists. As a 14 year old kid I had no clue who Mike Grell or Jerry Ordway were. These books were aimed at DC readers and would probably have been better off at Valiant. But props for giving these old-timers a payday.
Oh, good, I thought that was just me. And I appreciate the payday aspect, a lot of attempts didn't work out, but at least the creators got some big money for once. Walt Simonson saying Cyber Force #0 was by the far the biggest payday of his life is both gratifying that he at least got one, and infuriating that it didn't happen more often.
@@teambloodforce One of the best X-Men artists ever and Cyber Force was his biggest pay day??!! You're right, that sucks!
I wanna read this run one day
I was a big fan of Mike Grell's Jon Sable and i picked up the first 2 issues of Shamans Tears. It wasnt a bad comic, but, it didnt engage me enough to continue buying it.
Nice overview.
Thanks, man. I think it would have been tough for any kid to get into it back then, it just wasn't built that way.
@teambloodforce Mike Grell definitely had an old school pencilling style reminiscent of Denys Cowan and Gene Colan. It was interesting to see Denys Cowans work in a recent issue of Absolute Power Batman ‐ it didn't look good.
Great vid! I think I have issue two, where his powers are demonstrated. I don't remember if the art was any good, but back then, it was an interesting concept to me.
I can't imagine I would have thought it was particularly intersting when I was a kid, but then again I read the first seven issues of Brigade, so who knows.
I thought above Bravestarr too looking at that last page, lol!
@@NavySharkz lol you're the first one to mention that, I'd actually forgotten about it already
@@teambloodforce 😂
I just turned 45 and you say 45 isnt cool, you crushed me man haha
Lol, all I'm saying man, how much do you relate to the kids chugging monsters and doing stupid tiktok memes? We old, bud, it's fine. I'll challenge you to a walker duel one day.
@@teambloodforce its on brother😂
Todd gave sh1t to this book and Tribe because they weren’t able to deliver on a monthly basis…you got to love the irony 😂 Interestingly enough Grell is trying the Liefeldian layout
Well that was early days, and Todd did a pretty good job of getting Spawn out on time at least. I don't think he would have bothered saying that in 1994, nobody was getting anything out on time at that point.
@@teambloodforce Back in the day Todd and Larsen spoke about this stuff because Peter David triggered them - in hindsight those “debates” are just ego bashing.
Yeah, i enjoyed this series.
So an actual good comic book worth buying back then? Crazy.
Crazy, right? There were a couple.
