Jon Mess is actually a lyrical genius. Don't focus on the words, focus on the way it sounds. Think of it in a similar way to gutterals that you can't really understand, it's more of an instrument that's written to fit the music.
It's bittersweet to hear your praise of the funky basslines... their bassist, Tim passed away from an OD right before the album came out 🥺 I'll 2nd the Mothership recommendation.. Man of the Year is epic 🤯
Jon does intentionally write stupid lyrics. However, when he writes serious ones, they hit hard. My favorite is in Ember when he says: "I could've swore that I fixed myself 'cause I read a bunch a shit about mental health. But then I took another drink and said I felt like I don't need to think about nothing or the things that I do."
DGD is part of the "swancore" genre, named after Will Swan of the band. There are a couple bands like Hail The Sun, Royal Coda (past DGD vocalist Kurt Travis' band), Eidola (current DGD guitarist Andrew Wells' band), Sianvar (Hail The Sun vocalist and Will Swan), Secret Band (DGD screamer Jon Mess' band) and Dwellings, who are not affiliated with them, just to name a few. (not so) fun fact: this is the bassist Tim Feerick's last album before he passed away due to a fentanyl overdose. Oh yes, their lyrics are mostly complete bullshit, intentionally. I think they're just having fun, not trying to prove a point or something. There's some "lore" and callbacks for fans that makes this even more fun.
Not sure if I would've described DGD as metalcore. Always thought of them more like post-hardcore/prog rock, but that stuff doesn't matter anyway. This is my favorite band, so glad to see you give em a listen!
They are, technically speaking, not metalcore. I try not to get wrapped in the whole "well ackshually, this is " too much, because I feel you can get kinda lost in the sauce and not fully appreciate the music for what it is regardless of genre
@@Nathan-dn4zl oh yeah, for sure I feel much the same. Putting labels on genres often really impacts the experience you'll have with the material. I try not to think about that stuff a lot, but there is a general culture and mindset behind certain styles of music still that is sometimes just not very useful to ignore.
Haha, yes Jon has said himself that he just take lyrics that pops up in his head and thats flow with the song. Just to keep it fluid, more then beeing deep lyric wise. 🙂
Dropped acid some months back and watched/listened to the Synergy video, and when i say i was beyond happy is an understatement 😂 Absolutely blown away how good they’ve gotten. Mothership is still amazing but this album here is nuts lol
Actually, they have 3 vocalists now, in the songs For The Jeers, One Man's Cringe, Back On Deck, Current Events and Swallowed by Eternity we have Jon Mess (the screamer), and Tillian Pearson and Andrew Wells (new guitarist and vocalist) doing the cleans
So jon mess, the screamer, writes his lyrics based on “the way the screams sound” he knows most people dont know the screams and that they just add to the feel so he chose to take that to another level and has always said mostly nonsense, but if you never had lyrics to see, you may have never caught on how ridiculous they are lol there is also fan lore he buries throughout a lot of his screaming lyrics to add some fun. Once in a while he screams regular shit. Its rare tho lol
The uncleans are actually a lot of fun, and as you hear Jons voice from their original albums up to now, you can see an insane progression in his sound.
I don't know if you noticed, but there are actually two clean vocalists. Their guitarist Andrew Wells' vocals has some substantial parts in a few songs on this album.
Have had this on repeat since i discovered it. Ridiculous musicianship, incredible vocals, addictive melodies. Its got it all, and this is coming from a lover of Vildhjarta/HLB. Glad you discovered these guys, props to Corey for the recommendation
Love DGD! This is my fave album of their's alongside Mothership. I feel the juxtaposition between the sound of the vocalists is also mirrored in the writing. Tillian's lyrics seem heartfelt and serious and Jon's seem silly and care-free, i grew to like that about them and stopped focusing on what Jon was saying and just enjoying it.
The first step to liking DGD is realizing Jon Mess usually doesn't care what he says in his lyrics. The second step is realizing that you don't care either and you just wanna have fun
Honestly never would have described DGD as metalcore. They were definitely part of the post-hardcore wave but were unique enough to where they became their own genre (Swancore, named after the guitarist).
Id recommend checking out a tab for cream of the crop since you mentioned its not "as technical" as some of the metal on the channel. That shit is INSANE to try to learn. Otherwise glad you checked this album out its a masterpiece
Oh man you are in for a treat! Down the rabbit holeeee. DGD is one of my favorite bands of all-time. And Mothership is Top 5 Album of All-Time. Its def not for everyone but I just love em. Also just a note, Jon Mess's lyrics never makes sense (or almost) because the way the write em is just how words ''fit together'' as far as sounds goes, he writes vibes.
OH MY god coming back to this album randomly watching this reaction; this album reminds me so much of The Home Team. Especially some of the songs near the middle of the tracklist on Slow Bloom.
This has been such a fun reaction man. Loved this. Totally bias of course and would love some more DGD but god damn this had me smiling the whole time at how much you enjoyed this and how honest you were. And wait till you see Tillians stage moves 😂
The juxtaposition of this band is so good with the raw vocals of Jon Mess and the flighty and beautiful vocals of Tilian, together is just brilliant. But it extends past that too, Jon Mess lyrics being mostly nonsense with some meaning hidden in there sometimes, versus Tilians parts spending beautiful and like section of a normal song. Smashing that shit together for these guys just somehow works so fucking well.
It's funny, in a world of ever shortening content, I just realized I've been finding myself searching out longer content then usual, thigs like your videos, or like vod channels. Either way man, good shit.
Of course as an OG Issues fan, DGD was a no-brainer for me to listen to and I love them, this and their last album will forever live rent free in my head. Also Tyler Carter (Issues) and Tilian are really good solo artists as well
If you check out other albums it should be Mothership, a big favourite cause it has some of the funkiest songs AND some of their most intense and heavy songs
For all us guitar enthusiasts, sheethappens sells the official DGD tabs for their recent albums! Was so worth it for me to buy the books/ guitar pro files. There are so many hidden gems on this album, guitar-wise, it's unreal. Die another day especially is just delicious!
Based on hearing all your feedback, I think you'll really like Eidola, kind of a sister band to DGD through Wells, because it's got a lot of the same flavor, but also more prog.
I’m 51 years old and have been a fan of DGD for about 10 years now, so I’m still partial to Jonny Craig. But as a huge fan of Tides of Man, I was glad to see Tilian get the job. There was a period of time when everyone thought he was going to join Saosin, which would have been epic, and when Tides got wind of it, kicked him out (dumb move guys) which freed him up for DGD. They have a huge catalog, check out some of the earlier stuff, it’s got more soul.
"He looks that good and he sings like that, well now my day is ruined." Don't worry, he's also an alcoholic and has a little trouble with problematic behavior towards women, unfortunately.
Inspire the liars or Young robot and you'll get the command on the band's name. It sounds crazy for a metalhead, I know... but you'll get... I've been there (and I still FUCKIN love Monuments and Tesseract!!). Cheers from Chile mate!
For the Jeers is such a good track, I love that we get more of Andrew Wells vocals on it. He is their guitarist and new back up vocalist basically. He's also the vocalist of the band Eidola, he's so good. I love Tillians vocals too, I'm so bummed he's not part of the band amymore.
This is definitely their "lightest" album from the Tilian era where they doubled down on the funkiness. Mothership is definitely their heaviest sounding and i would say their magnum opus.
All your criticisms came at really weird times during the album like you would say it’s boring or nothings changed while the most unique song on the album is playing lol.
Jon Mess is such an amazing vocalist, the lyrics might not makes sense, but they are spot on with the feel of the music, its amazing. Whats almost more amazing is seeing people react to the lyrics like "What the f*ck are those lyrics?" and Jon is going like "achoo achoo achoo!" This is amazing I had a good laugh for sure! I mean the line about having a cold or a hay fever is actually very relatable, Jon is a genius, praise be.
I've been a long time fan of DGD, and while I loved some songs on the album, I thought it was lacking a bit in substance, which sucked. I thought it was a bit bloated as well. I think you'd enjoy some of their new(er) but not old albums. You'd probably hate their really old stuff, but youd probably like afterburner and mothership more
Why would you think he’d not like the older stuff? Just curious cause I feel like he’d really enjoy both Downtown Battle Mountain albums, like a lot lol
@@IvanRu27 you might be right, who knows. I just think he'd enjoy the mixing and polish of the newer stuff better, but idk, he might love the older stuff 🤷♂️
Their albums have always felt like packages of "single worthy" songs they just puke out, and its up to the individual to find which ones they like. Especially this album where they all sound so similar, and its so long it feels like a slog to get through.
It's crazy how you mention the sunny weather before listening to this. I got into them on their last record Afterburner and I always want to put them on when it's sunny out
If you want to hear their heavier stuff definitely check out the Acceptance Speech (The 2.0 release because it's mixed and mastered better) album or Instant Gratification. Songs like Awkward, Carve and Doom & Gloom have some very metalcore breakdown parts. Alternatively there's also a song called Burning Down The Nicotine Armoire from their first EP.
Mothership imo is the best album with Tilian. Yes, DGD’s style has always been that. I think they wanted to distance themselves from being the type of band that carried themselves too seriously. Always have a groove to them.
DGD are fantastic. I actually think they've sounded quite different over the years but that could be owed to their many lineup changes. Their lead guitarist and drummer are the only two members who have been in the band the whole way through. As for albums to check out after, I think you should check out the other two vocalists! Jonny Craig was on two albums, Downtown Battle Mountain 1 and 2, and Kurt Travis was on their self-titled(also referred to as death star) and Happiness. Definitely check out DBM2 and Happiness. Those are all time fan favorites Also, yeah, Jon's lyrics are intentionally terrible/weird. He sprinkles some lucid prose in from time to time and it does hit, but he's gone on record saying that he focuses on the feel/sound of the words, not so much the meaning. Wasn't too hard to adjust to when I started listening. He's a funny guy and I always love music that doesn't take itself too seriously. ALSO also, thank you for paying attention to the bass. Almost nobody on TH-cam (that I've seen react to their stuff) pays it any mind. Tim's work kicks ass alsoalsoalso, yeah the album does suffer from having 17 songs. If you're not already a fan, it is a little daunting and honestly a little exhausting. But few bands can crank out 15+ songs on one album and keep it fresh. For what it is, it's better than it could have been
I highly recommend checking out the full live video for the Tree City 2 session, its their best album (imo) despite being live. It also has songs from every era of Dance Gavin Dance. This album you listened to was definitely their most pop yet and a lot of their older stuff has more funk, punk, and metalcore elements mixed in. I also think overtime they've become less technical overall (though more vibey like this album)
This is a great reaction man! Can respect your thoughts on them and would just like to recommend an album if you ever decide to give them a go again. Think you’d be the type to really dig Downtown Battle Mountain 2, really technical and has a different singer. Cheers
Comparing DGD to metalcore bands was your first mistake. Saying the guitar isn’t technical was your second, and getting bored because you probably want metalcore was your third. 3 strikes you’re out
i disagree that the lyrics are bad. just because they aren't literal and didactic doesn't mean they don't have poetic and symbolic meaning. Jon's lyrics are my favorite. Proxy the awesome and seek the deletion of reaper repeating submission face.
I know im couple weeks late, however Jon's lyrics in most songs are like this because its more about the feel then the lyrics with his side of the song. That being said, i highly recommend Man of the Year from thier 2016 album called Mothership. Most of Jon's lyrics in that have a big meaning and the entire song is a masterpiece with a crazy deep story.
Love me some DGD, last time I saw them was with Periphery and I had to buy double the amount of tickets for them because someone scammed me on the first purchase. But I refused to miss the concert!!! 😂 Would love to see your reaction to a Protest The Hero album. Another super unique band that blends technical guitar work, melodic vocals and progressive elements beautifully
John Mess, the screamer, said in one of his very few interviews that he screams to the song before writing lyrics to nail down the sound he wants then puts words to it that sounds good screamed. There are some songs he has meaningful lyrics but mostly he just makes noise
Jon's lyrics are intentionally stupid as that is just how he is 😂. I like this album but felt way too long. By the way you HAVE to check out the new aviations song is soo fucking good. Definitely up your alley
I'm pretty sure, though I could be wrong, that Jon Mess actually has said that he intentionally does stupid lyrics because if he does something with too much emotional weight it can make him tense up and fuck up his vocals.
Yes, the lyrics are very eccentric and seemingly meaningless. Hahah However, when you really sit down and read them, there are all sorts of political and societal messages in there. Much deeper than most initially think. Awesome song writing
Ya man we can tell you don't get the harsh vocals if you aren't putting Jon Mess in your top 3 harsh vocalists of all time for real. A lot of people consider him the prized possession of the band because of how clean he screams. You're too focused on the lyrics (I know how you feel because I said the same when I first heard them) but the more you listen, the more it becomes more of a quirk than a nuisance.
3 vocalist in the band technically, Tilian is the lead cleans, Jon is the screams, and the guitarist Andrew does a bunch of cleans too, the deeper sounding ones!
I personally think this album is fine but nothing special for DGD. Their previous albums have a lot of variety and aren't stale. HIGHLY recommend listening to Mothership for sure!

drew talking abt dgd's lyrics during one man's cringe was just so fitting lol
Mothership and Afterburner are both worth a full listen through honestly
I know im couple weeks late, however Jon's lyrics in most songs are like this because its more about the feel then the lyrics with his side of the song. That being said, i highly recommend Man of the Year from thier 2016 album called Mothership. Most of Jon's lyrics in that have a big meaning and the entire song is a masterpiece with a crazy deep story.
this is one of the best reaction videos i've ever seen. would be super interested to see you react to other albums from DGD!
Legend has it the Enigma machine was really coded with John Mess lyrics
Love me some DGD, last time I saw them was with Periphery and I had to buy double the amount of tickets for them because someone scammed me on the first purchase. But I refused to miss the concert!!! 😂
Would love to see your reaction to a Protest The Hero album. Another super unique band that blends technical guitar work, melodic vocals and progressive elements beautifully
PTH is goated
They usually tour with Don Broco, Hail the sun, Volumes, Thousand Below, Coheed (almost). Bands like that
John Mess, the screamer, said in one of his very few interviews that he screams to the song before writing lyrics to nail down the sound he wants then puts words to it that sounds good screamed. There are some songs he has meaningful lyrics but mostly he just makes noise
I saw them on tour with Periphery actually
Jon's lyrics are intentionally stupid as that is just how he is 😂. I like this album but felt way too long.
By the way you HAVE to check out the new aviations song is soo fucking good. Definitely up your alley
You should check out “Technology” by Don Broco, Rob Damiani’s band. The album is an absolute masterpiece.
The last few tracks of the album kinda lose momentum for sure. But it’s a great album nonetheless. I think you’d love the previous album, AFTERBURNER
when you look up tillian first thing in my mind you will say was "oh no hes hot" you reaction did not disappoint xD
If you want to go back to the start of the tilian era start with acceptance speech, which happens to be my favorite of this era
Loved the reaction. Definitely check out their "Mothership" album.
You eventually come around to the stupidity of the lyrics, and they become another positive. Just constantly putting a smile on your face
DGD has that perfect summer vibe
I'm pretty sure, though I could be wrong, that Jon Mess actually has said that he intentionally does stupid lyrics because if he does something with too much emotional weight it can make him tense up and fuck up his vocals.
Yes, the lyrics are very eccentric and seemingly meaningless. Hahah
However, when you really sit down and read them, there are all sorts of political and societal messages in there. Much deeper than most initially think. Awesome song writing
28:10 is the real deal man, look up Will Swans play throughs, or their live albums Tree City Sessions 1 + 2!
I love watching people react to Jon Mess’s lyrics for the first time lol
Ya man we can tell you don't get the harsh vocals if you aren't putting Jon Mess in your top 3 harsh vocalists of all time for real. A lot of people consider him the prized possession of the band because of how clean he screams. You're too focused on the lyrics (I know how you feel because I said the same when I first heard them) but the more you listen, the more it becomes more of a quirk than a nuisance.
DREW PLEASE CHECK OUT MOTHERSHIP BY DANCE GAVIN DANCE, THAT ALBUM IS SO GOOOD
3 vocalist in the band technically, Tilian is the lead cleans, Jon is the screams, and the guitarist Andrew does a bunch of cleans too, the deeper sounding ones!
I personally think this album is fine but nothing special for DGD. Their previous albums have a lot of variety and aren't stale. HIGHLY recommend listening to Mothership for sure!
