Lol, ok but on topic about this, I personally don't take or learn morals from the show of MLP itself, but I do like to compare the morals of the certain situations to what I experienced in real life. I learned most of my morals and ethics from my mother, and yes defiently from friendship influences. I'd argue I learned a lot about kindness, patience, sharing, and tolerence as well as safety from my mom, where as courage, determination and...anger management from my dad. Where as a lot of my friends, or more like...classmates, were the influence of what NOT to do, even though I did make a few mistakes here and there.
But this is what I like about MLP, it shares certain morals and situations with the characters that remind me of similar situations I've been in. It makes me think back on how I handled the situation and how I learned that moral.
Anyways thanks for sharing guys ^^

The whole "It's for Kids" argument isn't a reason, it's a poorly made up excuse of an excuse when people can't think of another argument so they fall back on it, it's not proving a point it's pathetic and childish. I've heard the excuse so often I roll my eyes whenever someone uses it, if we followed the age guidance of everything, I wouldn't be allowed to watch my favourite comedy, Allo Allo because it has a 12 rating, opps, can't watch it because it's beneath me, I guess I'll watch Lord of the Rings, guess what can't watch that either it's a 12, okay I'm going to read Harry Potter, nope can't do that either, it's for kids to teenagers and I'm 25. This "Argument" only makes sense if you apply it in every area! It means theme parks are off limits to adults, if something is meant for kids, I'd like to see the law that says I have to watch things for my age group! In the end of the day if something is meant for kids there is no justifiably good reason why an adult can't watch it and learn from it. I still watch things from my youth and they still teach me things because some times even if it's a small thing like I should apply more understanding in my life, it still helps. This has been Andrew's annoying stupid comment saying "Where's my beer? So I can forget this comment!"

    • @thanoseid2883
      @thanoseid2883 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

You bring up an excellent point. Someone who I know tried the “it’s for kids” argument on me because I still watch power rangers and I pointed out to them that they go to theme parks ( I literally saw them go) it left them sputtering excuses because they had nothing to stand on. Age is irrelevant these days and everyone knows it.

I had this problem when I searched for reviews of my favorite fantasy author. Most people seemed to refer to her books as "for kids", "I would have liked it when I was 12", "it's more childish than other works" and so on.
It's very clear for me that most of her books are meant for teenagers (and young adults that still have that sense of wonder).
They just see it has a fairy on it and brush it off as "for kids".
Look, there are a lot of things that are for kids. But making out scenes with marks, descriptions of torture, and the sense of slowly falling into overwhelming despair aren't exactly the first thing you would list on there...
But hey. It's fantasy, so it's obviously for 12 year olds.

The thing about morality in MLP compared to Dan VS is that MLP gave morality an important role by having Twilight write to Celestial. That became the standard of the show from then on. That's why I take the morality of the show seriously because viewers will get the impression of how important of a role for morality. Dan VS was made to be more entertaining than being Aesop like. And as you said, the show was able to call out in Dan's ridiculous schemes.

    • @Thomasmemoryscentral
      @Thomasmemoryscentral 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Another thing MLP should do is never jam the morals down our throats. George Carlin described how morals in Thomas the tank engine (at least before it had a dark period) were gently massaged in without being blatant.

Personally, I love the morals in MLP. I didn't have many friends growing up and have missed out on a LOT of social interactions that would allow most people to just figure this shit out. As well as the fact that I tend to just think differently and this stuff doesn't even occur to me, so when I started watching MLP when I was a freshman in college, it actually helped me learn stuff about friendship and social interactions. I know that sounds sad, but hey, some people don't get this is stuff (like me) without being pointed out because of crappy childhoods. And I don't understand why people dismiss kid's media just because it's kid's media. You'd think people would care that much more BECAUSE it's for impressionable young kids.

First off, that moment at the end cracked me up. I just love when a character doesn't need to yell, scream, or swear to intimidate someone. That was gold. :D
Anyway, this was definitely an interesting topic to think about when it comes to MLP. Personally, I would put myself somewhere in the middle with this spectrum. For the most part, I am a casual viewer and just want to have fun when watching an episode. At the same time, I love the way it takes approaches to morals and lessons. I never thought myself too old to learn from kids shows, and I greatly enjoy seeing what kind of morals the show gets across. So I like to look at it from both sides. Having fun, yet still taking something from it.
MLP has proved to be such a smart and very engaging show in many ways, so I definitely think it's reasonable to expect great things from it. Sure, we may have seen plenty of lessons like this in other shows, but it doesn't make them any less valuable. So, I think MLP does pretty well in being a good balance with having fun and yet still giving you something to think about.

This sort of reminds me of when my dog died. I had never experienced the death of someone so close to me and I was in a state of almost complete clinical depression. I rewatched the Thundercats episode: Song of the Petalars, one of my favorites as a kid on how to deal with death. Even though I knew this episode inside and out, it was still a great comfort to me. It gave me a road map and I could experience the situation in a controlled environment without being judged or forced to be happy by others. I could just genuinely take the time to mourn my loss. That was something my friends and family couldn't really give me. That episode still carries a lot of weight for me and I will always cherish it.

I believe the inception of G4 MLP was about creating a modern day Aesop's Fables, except with colorful ponies of palletes & personalities to teach lessons of morality for "The Entire Family" on TV... As a means to sell toys. The morals of the show are arguably the most under appreciated aspects of MLP.
For a show to convey a meaningful message with an entertaining story is quite a Rarity now days (Pun intended). That is why MLP is special to me. I also observed that Seasons 1-4 was about teaching Friendship in a theoretical sense (i.e don't lie, don't judge, listen to your friends, and let the future worry about itself. Season 5 and beyond seems to focus on teaching Friendship in Practice. (i.e How to resolve conflicts, what does it mean to love your enemy, what are the temptations for being a leader). I think this is a wonderful trend. "I had to feed you with milk, not with solid food, because you weren’t ready for anything stronger" (1 Corinthians 3:2). I would like to think the audience is ready for a deeper application for lessons about friendship. Can I get a Hallelujah!?!

VeggieTales is da bomb! I think it's cuz we want this show, since it's a moral-presenting show, to be something that teaches truth. Our generation is getting out into the world and realizing what holds up from what we learned growing up. When we see some moral that isn't the way things are, we shout, "Don't give me that crap!"

+Doodle Dabble VeggieTales is a kid-ified rendition of the Bible. Not really a good source of morals there. Especially if you read the original versions of some of the scenes rendered in it. Like the slaughter at Jericho, for example. Way to show the "goodness" of God there, people.

Dairo512 Bible stories have stayed with us for centuries, much like Aesop and Greek Myths, partially because they really are invaluable sources of lessons. Granted, you need to present them to kids different than adults, who know God most certainly would NOT approve of the slaughter of Jericho, but it's little different than what mlp did with the Hoofields and the McColts or what children's books do with Greek Myths.

Jeremiah Bok "Bible stories have stayed with us for centuries, much like Aesop and Greek Myths, partially because they really are invaluable sources of lessons."
That is *not* why Bible stories have stayed for centuries (political editing notwithstanding), and you should *know* better than to suggest otherwise.
"Granted, you need to present them to kids different than adults, who know God most certainly would NOT approve of the slaughter of Jericho,"
Maybe you and I have read different Bibles. In the one I read, God *commanded* the slaughter of Jericho. It was the whole reason the city was in the book at all.
"but it's little different than what mlp did with the Hoofields and the McColts or what children's books do with Greek Myths."
No, it's actually *exactly* the same. The only difference is the subject matter involved.
Also, a *lot* of what makes Greek mythology what it is is left out for the sake of teaching it to children, much like modern religions. I honestly think they should be held off until the kids are old enough to even *begin* to understand what's going on in the stories, but that's just my personal opinion.

"Maybe you and I have read different Bibles. In the one I read, God commanded the slaughter of Jericho. It was the whole reason the city was in the book at all."
Ha! Very good point. :) This is a matter of some controversy. However, the Jews saw God in war and violence. For instance, they believed if you were born blind or whatnot God was punishing you. So that's how they wrote the Bible, through that lens, believing God was ordering and doing things He strictly speaking wasn't.
"I honestly think they should be held off until the kids are old enough to even begin to understand what's going on in the stories, but that's just my personal opinion."
Very strong point. I can respect that. For me though, my childhood would have a nasty hole without Greek Myths, I treasured them. :)

Wow, Dr. Wolf is becoming more and more like Fluttershy by the day. He even has the stare down now. (Except instead of taming unruly animals, he can tame unruly analysts~)
Thanks so much for making this video guys! I knew that it was going to be great as soon as I clicked on it! I had a lot of great laughs! But more importantly, the commentary actually made me reflect a lot on how blessed I am to be able to enjoy dissecting morals of an episode, and then being able to apply it to my life. A lot of my peers can't, or don't do that, so they struggle with problems that many episodes of MLP, or other TV shows I've watched have already tackled. (And that could vastly improve their situations if they just stopped and listened.)
    Thanks again, guys. :)

    Whip it! Whip it good!
Very strong lesson guys! Most times I think many people forget common sense from time to time. I have been in those situation where I have been in fights with people who I throught were my friends, and the friendship finally fell through. My moral is perfect is a lie, but just because we have flaws dosent mean we can work around them. As humans we will have many flaws and as we grow we learn things over time so that we can teach it to the next gen. Even after we are still learning new things. I really hate how toxic our world and the internet has become, but maybe in time we can teach these new morals to hopefully not repeat past mistakes. Again very strong video!

A lot of the morals we learn as children are the lessons we need to function as responsible adults. Shows like MLP teach children these issues, and for adults, reinforce what we SHOULD ALREADY know. But alas, as people grow older and learn more from other media, the conflict of "that's for kids"/ "I'm too old for that" gets in the way of retaining the lessons of our youth. We need not dismiss these lessons, but show them by example to children through applying them first and foremost to ourselves, consciously and uprightly so.

I'm in my twenties and MLP's morals honestly help me. It's not like they're anything that new, but they're reminders of how to live life to the best I can.
True story... when I first started watching the show it was right before I was leaving college. I was panicking I wouldn't be able to pack up and move everything to storage before my flight and I was nearly in tears. I had just finished Applebuck Season and realized I was being like Applejack and trying to do it all on my own. I called my friend and got the help I needed. It honestly helped remind me that I can rely on my friends and don't always have to rely on myself.

Typically speaking i'm not dismissive of morality but I personally don't believe in it. It's fun to talk about it and get the psychology behind it but typically my favorite kinds of morals are hard to write and seldom found in kids shows (though one may argue it has more to do with themes then morals in what i'm about to say but whatever) and it's when the message still means something or another in the face of nihilism. The best example I can think of was the character arc of Iskandar from Fate Zero.

Good points, you guys. I think you really explained something I've been dealing with lately - analyzing shows I care about because I WANT to see good in them. I had some difficulty with Gravity Falls (puts shields up against flying FlameBricks) because I LOVED the show, but I loved it enough that I began to notice the slowly growing trend of things I found disturbing - many of which I found especially disturbing BECAUSE they were happening in a kids' cartoon. Kind of goes hand-in-hand with the other stuff you said: kids are smart, but impressionable, and we adults often exemplify a lack of the morals they DIDN'T learn as kids in their adult behavior. Totally think it's important for kids' shows to have good morals, or at least to pay attention to the morals shows are teaching your kids if your kids are watching them.
Overall, very nicely put. ^^ Thanks for the thoughts, you guys!
